by far the best singer songwriter of all time....the original rhinestone cowboy....people who wanna be an outlaw country singer ....take a lesson from this man!
dac never have too apologize i agree !!!!!!!! one of the most amazing songwriters i have ever came across and i am honored to say i have met the outlaw
it is true, many years ago i was harrassed by african americans, when they thought coe was somebody else. im not a racist, but he was entitled to his music, limos may come limos may go but it was not he. it was coe that tok my phone calls. coe that i support, and coe that is not finished.
Whoever commented that he stole a line from Fire and Rain and didn't understand, let me explain. All the critics praise "fire and rain" as so great because its beautiful words and emotional expression. DAC started with that line to show contrast between the two songs. This song is better in every way. The critics were and are bias. Thats his point.
Because he has so much talent but he still has a true biker mentality, I love that he is true to HIMSELF and NEVER waivers from who he TRULY is! He has NEVER sold out or went with the "norm" he is who he is and I love him and having nothing but respect for him for that!
That was ridiculous. the first few lines were from James Taylor's most popular "Fire and Rain". DAC kills me. I want to love him, but he does so many things that I just don't understand. The obvious steal of the first few lines of Fire and Rain...all the racial music. I just don't get it. He had the ability to make great music, but watered down his skillset with what he did. I was bred on DAC music, but he seems to have sabotaged his good work with sub par music
@JJeffreyMesserole I have to agree with you. I LOVE Coe, and was raised listening to his music, however he did seem to sabotage himself along the way through his career. His narcissism was part of his allure really. I mean, to a degree many of us are drawn to his in your face, rebellious attitude toward the establishment, but this is also what held him back from commercial success. Still, I love him and his music. He's definitely one of the most talented singer/songwriters of all time.
My fiancé & I are going 2 dance our 1st song as husband & wife to this song! Love 13 year old Tanya Tucker's version of this! Too bad people back then were up in arms cuz they thought it was a song about sex, even tho David said he wrote it for his friend's wedding!
All I'm gunna say say is this... Listen to "If I Needed You" by Townes Van Zandt.
I realize there will be an inevitable group of retards who are too stupid/tone deaf to recognize it and I also realize that the hardcore Coe nutriders will pretend it doesn't exist, but for everyone else with a remotely objective bone in their body, draw your own conclusions... I actually enjoy Coe's original music but he's a proven pathological liar and based on evidence, occasionally, a plagiarist too.
@RoofFiddler Agreed 100% brother, I was just gonna say damn near the exact same, but you beat me to it..... I like most of DAC's stuff but this is obviously a rip off of "If I Needed You" and it's sad that TVZ didn't get as much credit for it as Coe did for this, Townes is one of the best, not to mention most underrated musicians ever..... And the little James Taylor intro to this performance didn't help with the whole rip-off opinion either lol
Love David Allan Coe. His writing is a HUGE talent, his voice, his style and performance, he's just one of the best country singers ever. He is way under rated, and with such talent that is such a shame.
He could have left out some of the disgusting crap that ruined him in my opinion. What a scum bucket to have written the smut that he decided to write and sing. He wound up where he chose to lay and in a field of stone I suppose. That was not the field that he would choose again or maybe he just didn't know the

@103cuber I want to share with u that a friend told me about this song (never heard it before). She said it reminded her of me and my husband. We've been married 29 years and he is in his 3rd year of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). The song depicts exactly how I feel about him. He is totally dependent on me. He is on a ventilator and can't do anything but sit in his wheelchair. Life expectancy is 3-5 years. I love him so much. He is my life. Don't know how I'll live without him.
@103cuber Wow! I didn't realize I was responding to someone all the way in Australia. I live in America. Thank you so much for your encouragement. You are absolutely right in saying that we must celebrate today! We can't live for tomorrow, but only for today. Thanks for reminding me. Are you on face book by chance? If so and are interested so that you keep up with his progress, let me know and I'll send you my info so we can be FB friends and you can see pictures so you can put a face with us.
@SuperNursegoodbody , You, your husband and family will be in my prayers. You are displaying the true meaning of love.... And if you know it or not, you are touching lives with your sacrifice's.... May God bless you...
@kawiman777 Thanks so much for your encouraging words. We do covet your prayers. I have learned a lot thru this. I've learned that love is a committment and not just a warm fuzzy feeling. When times get tough and our energy is almost gone, we have to realize what we committed to when we said "I do". There is nothing I wouldn't do for him. We don't know what tomorrow holds, but we certainly know Who holds tomorrow. If you're on Face Book, I would love to send you my info so we could be friends.
he is 70 great singer/song writer and doesnt have to ever, ever apolagize 4 any of the things hes ever said, he will rock on until his last breath, and rightfully so!!!
one of the greatest song writers of all time. He might hate people and being told what to do but he is still amazing. When he dies it will just be one less REAL human being.
If you look past the fact he's a white supremacist, a member of the one percenter biker gang, a misogynist and a convicted felon who allegedly spent time on death row he's quite a good singer and songwriter.
The guitar player singing back up is Warren Haynes...

@RoofFiddler Emmylou Harris released that song in 1981. Tanya Tucker's third album is named for the song DAC wrote for her around or before 1973.
Did Townes write "If I Needed You" before 1973 or after?
