I liked that she said he just does it on his own, no pushing from parents. Obviously she is helping him but she's not pushing him to practice, practice, practice and that is why the performance was so real and endearing. This showed when he was looking at something in the audience and lost tempo for a second--totally a 3 year old thing to do, he wasn't drilled and drilled and drilled. This is great!

I agree with other people who say this isn't genius. Talent, yes, prodigy? I don't think so. My family had musical instruments and books accessible to me, and I went to a good prep school. I was able to read and play simple piano music at 3, I could read books at a college level by six, but I don't consider myself a genius, honestly. Talented, yes. Prodigy, no. If he was playing advanced pieces, I would agree with the prodigy camp.

Those of you who keep saying he's good (or extraordinary) at playing because he's Asian are missing the point. He has support, opportunity, encouragement, and the ability to concentrate. He is presented with high standards and is expected to reach for them. (It's possible that Asian people have more finger dexterity--this has been studied.) What Americans lack is that support etc. and the willingness to work hard in these areas. Our society also doesn't value musical or intellectual ability.
