  • Weird is...from the Arizona side, the road that interchanges US 93 is no longer open to traffic. Are they making you cross the bridge just to access the Hoover Dam now?

  • Hi, I've read that you can stop along the road when going to Vegas near the new bridge to actually see Hoover dam from the new bridge? Is this true? I didn't notice any parking grounds before or after the bridge in your vid?

  • @Mobi666: Hey there. Yes, you can still access the old road (and the parking lot to walk on top of both the Hoover Dam and the new bypass bridge) by getting off at Nevada State Route 172 at Exit 2 (former US 93). In the green annotation at time marker 5:36 in the video, it says "To Hoover Dam Visitor Center." Hope this helps.

  • @FreewayBrent : Hi thanks but that's not what I meant. I visited the hoover dam last year. I would like to know if you can walk on the new bridge so that you can take some pics of hoover dam from on the bridge. (because with the car you see nothing driving on the bridge)

  • @Mobi666: Sorry, I guess I didn't make it clear enough/word that correctly...you can walk across both the Hoover Dam...and/or walk across the new bypass bridge, from the parking lot. There's always a steady stream of visitors walking on the new bridge. Hopefully this makes more sense.

  • 2:38 -- When I saw the "DO NOT PASS" sign I was thinking "Why?" but then I saw the cars coming from the other side...

  • @Coastergeekperson04: Ha, yeah. The good news is that the facility is now 4 lanes throughout; no more construction or paving work.

  • I mean from LV to LA

  • Which freeway is more fun taking back from LV? US 95 or I-15?

  • @HoltCalifornia: Oh hey, just read this now. I'd say I-15, most definitely. US 95 is only 1 lane in each direction and really not all that interesting, scenery-wise. At least not between US 93 and I-40.

  • You double also by the right in the freeway and I was wondering if you have the right ^^ (sorry for my english)

  • In the united states you are entitled to double by the right ?

  • @TheSmallville75: I'm actually not sure what you mean by this, since I've never heard of such a term here. Is there another way to describe what you were trying to explain, by any chance?

  • @TheSmallville75: If you meant passing to the right, yes, it is completely legal in the US.

  • The music blends in so perfectly....superb video!

  • @sauravrt: Thank you!

  • I-11 in 2011, that would be neat

  • @ir10031981: Definitely can't argue against the coolness factor of having a new interstate designation. :-)

  • Warning to all motorists, if your try to drive south on US 93 from Las Vegas after 10 AM you will be stuck in 1.5 to 2 hour traffic back up north of,in and south of Boulder City to the Hoover Dam exit.Seems the project planners were a bit off thier game.On a side note, now Boulder City has plenty of car and truck exhaust to green thier grass.

  • @Fockersnextdoor: I was wondering how the Nevada side of the bypass would fare, with traffic merging down to 2 lanes. According to your account, the higher speeds that the bypass has allowed has simply moved the bottleneck to Exit 2.

  • @FreewayBrent True. the bottleneck gets tight and slow in Boulder City,NV during mid-day and after-noon, once you clear of Boulder City the traffic is not to bad over the new bridge into AZ.

  • It was about time. That two-lane road that I went on to Las Vegas in 2004 was too congested. I like that they kept the mountainsides normal and not put any slick stuff. At least it's looser now with lesser traffic going on the original US 93. The bridge looks fabulous. Liked the new exit to Hoover Dam. I was in tears when the crossing of the memorial bridge happened--I thought about Pat Tillman and Mike O'Callaghan and what their families are going through.

  • @north5880: Pat Tillman. A man who definitely made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

  • This is by far the greatest road video I've ever seen!! You're on to something with your graphics! If you haven't, you really deserve an award for your work!

  • @Halsey71: Hey, thanks for the kind words and encouragement!

  • You have changed. Youre more like freewayjim & now you do highways. Nice vid.

  • I'm going to Vegas tomorrow from PHX starting at 3:30 am!

  • @BoogsterSU2: lol, are you really? Don't party too hard in Vegas. Lemme know if they've finally finished repaving US 93 in the sections that I showed off in this video; I believe the speed limit will be 65 MPH, leading up to the bypass bridge, and 55 MPH over the bridge, itself.

  • @FreewayBrent Yes. Except we slowed it down a little because of ALL THAT RAIN AND FOG covering the area!

    (Luckily, we made it!)

  • @FreewayBrent Actually, they did. Just days after this video was shot....

  • My family used to vacation up in Montana, and we would take US HWY 93 out of vegas to get there.

  • @wentsurfing: Wow, seriously? That's quite a long haul. I'm assuming you've also taken I-15, which is a faster route for such a long trek.

  • Cool video, I didn't even know they had opened the new bypass. I have heard rumours of an interstate connecting Phoenix to Las Vegas, as I-11 and this would be part of it. But I'm sure that would be decades away.

  • @Travisjcjunky: Yeah, I wasn't aware that it was open, until a few days before I recorded this. Somebody uploaded some raw footage of the new bypass, and while I was coming back from Colorado, I figured there was no good reason to not drive the new bypass.

  • Stunning video! This landscape seems unreal!

  • @pepedone: Oh, it's real, alright. :-D Even more amazing is that it's not even that far away from Las Vegas, a metro area of over 2 million people now. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • @FreewayBrent These western highways are really beautiful. I love the contrast between cities and desertic landscapes, or large empty spaces. I also like both Las Vegas and the Hoover Dam.

  • Nice giong to miss being able to drive across that thing

  • @2004JETTA: I believe you can still walk across the Hoover Dam, but I'm not 100% positive about that.

  • That was a wonderful video. Keep on making more travel videos

  • @interstateruler: Appreciate the positive feedback!

  • Great video of a great landscape!

  • @flees4free: A great landscape, indeed. There's something very hypnotic about driving for hundreds and hundreds of miles, out in the Desert Southwest.

  • The Hoover Dam bypass is finally open!

  • @USRoads: Yes, indeed, it is *very much* open!

  • Thanks for the video, Brent -- I've been waiting for this bridge to open!

  • @jeremyvl: Hey, no problem! It seems like a lot of people have been really enjoying this video.

  • i am very surprised that there is no signs that say = do not attempt to stop anywhere near this bridge , or anything related. i think that is gonna be a problem in the issue , i know if i ever get the chance to get out there again i would find the view more impressive from there , than the regular bridge.

  • @ScrewdUPClickV2: Scroll over to 5:09 in the video; there's a pretty large sign with red letters that says no stopping on the bridge. Hard to catch in time-lapsed speed, but it's easy to read at real time speeds.

  • I heard that because most of US 93 is divided so far, AZ wants to rename this into an official highway number: Interstate 11.

  • @BoogsterSU2: You are absolutely correct about the numbering; this will indeed be part of the future I-11 corridor. I would say about half of US 93, south of I-40, is 4 lanes, with the other 2 lane segments being upgraded on a gradual basis. However, I don't think I-11 will be signed for quite some time, as most of the corridor still has at-grade intersections.

  • Awesome and breathtaking footage of the Hoover Dam Bypass! Thanks for uploading!

  • @wld2008: No problem! Appreciate the feedback.

  • Interesting to see the new alignment. That bridge must've been quite something to drive over. Nice video!

  • @FreewayTitan: Well, I'll be honest. The new bridge is a bit of a letdown, as the concrete barriers were built so high that you can't see anything to the sides. At least I was prepared for that in advance, as someone uploaded raw footage, a couple of days after the new bridge opened. Still, everything about the new bypass is wonderful. Thanks for watching. :-)

  • @FreewayBrent Oh, okay. I still want to go on it! XD Your welcome.

  • Now that's some *really* black asphalt! The bridge is absolutely awesome and, in my opinion, adds to the beauty of the Hoover Dam. Excellent job as always!

  • @CosmoPhotography: Gotta love fresh asphalt!

  • ...amazing road - amazing countryside - great vid Brent...

  • @GeoffJennyOliver: Thank you, my friend!

  • Is this highway part of the NAFTA CANAMEX corridor?

  • @jfs1988 Any freeway connecting to another country is considered a nafta corridor .. yes this is part of Canamex. for more info on the routes visit canamex dot org

  • @jfs1988: Glad ScrewdUpClickV2 answered this for me, as I would not have been able to give you a knowledgeable answer.

  • Nice work, Brent. Thanks for sharing...

  • @necroslair:..and thanks for watching!

  • Thanks so much for getting out there to capture the new bridge so quickly. Awesome work. Also That was very considerate of you to let those folks pass. We could use more drivers like that. About the bridge though I'd have to agree with Chris. It wouldn't hurt to put a lower steel guard rail on the sides. It could go much lower and still be up to code.

  • @eluko79: I totally agree; the bridge itself is anti-climatic for anybody driving on it. I guess the folks planning the bridge wanted there to be a guarantee that nobody would flip over 900 feet to their deaths, lol. Everything else about the new bypass is great. And yes, I always pull over for faster moving traffic.

  • Great video, but the bridge is a bit disappointing from a motorist-point-of-view. You can't see much over the side, trucks probably have a better view.

  • @aswchris: I agree; I was already prepared for that, though, thanks to some raw footage that was uploaded to YouTube, a couple of days after the bridge was opened. Thanks for watching!

  • Nice "dam" vid, Brent. ;-)

  • @Bryant5493: I'm glad you give a "dam" :-P

  • @FreewayBrent

    LOL

  • Well I look forward to driving on the new bridge next time I go up to Vegas. I remember the old two lane road past the dam and I for one won't miss it. Excellent video!

  • @edgexxi: I agree; I am definitely *not* going to miss the old alignment. I think the new 4 lane alignment is a blessing for the average motorist. Thanks for watching!

  • A very well layed out video..Thanks for keeping us updated on what has changed out there..I drove that stretch of US 93 back in November 2000 and seeing countless bigrigs drive over the dam.

  • @rare12inchsingles: No problem, my friend.

I would have hated driving the old alignment in a big rig; those turns are awfully tight. Of course, after 9/11, all big-rigs were required to detour onto Highway 95, which added a couple of hours of drive time for the average trucker.

  • That must have been a sweet ride!

  • @jonboi525: Oh yeah, it was definitely a joy to drive. It's a good 4x as fast as the old alignment, and that's not counting all the horrible congestion that would delay drivers more than an hour on some Friday's, Sunday's and holiday weekends.

  • Wow those are quite the views there, Brent. Very nice!

  • @CptSchmidt: Yeah, no kidding! Absolutely love driving thru there. Thanks for the kind words.

  • Awesome video! :-)

    Keep up the good work!

  • @bschaven: Thank you!

  • Thank you for doing the bypass bridge alignment!

But when will cars stop merging into 2 lanes like the one seen in this video? And what are the underpasses for?

  • @BoogsterSU2: The 4 lane alignment will return, this upcoming weekend. They temporarily reduced it to 2 lanes, to conduct a final repaving, and it was just my "luck" that I happened to drive thru, during the 2 lane reduction period.

  • @FreewayBrent But what about the underpasses? Are those roads or trails on top of them?

P.S. I attempted to make a time-lapse for myself, hence the related video on the right... (part 5)

  • @BoogsterSU2: Ya know, you're actually the 2nd person to propose that the overpasses are actually trails. I'm pretty sure they will lead to access roads, but that's actually a question that someone else may be able to answer.

  • Nice video! That was certainly a feat of engineering they didn't have back in the 1930's!

  • @haljackey: You are most certainly correct!

I deliberately avoided driving thru there on Friday's, Sunday's or holiday periods, as the backups were miserable. The worst delays were on Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve or Labor Day; up to 2 hour delays to access the Hoover Dam! The new bypass has completely eliminated any backups; a great investment indeed.

  • nice job brent . some one told em that those overpasses are not roads but built for the wildlife , do you know if that is true ?

  • @ScrewdUPClickV2: Never thought of that, but those overpasses are designed as if they're to be used for automobile traffic. I'll have to look into that, but it almost looked like they were constructing access roads to connect to the overpasses.

  • @ScrewdUPClickV2 Not that I'd really know, because I don't know a whole lot about US freeways, but usually wildlife overpasses (in Canada, anyway) look like part of the natural landscape, and the road cuts under it like a very short tunnel. If they don't make a tunnel, usually what they'll do is make a wildlife underpass. Look up 'wildlife crossing' on Wikipedia and there are some great pictures of pretty standard wildlife passes. Hope this helps.

  • @CptSchmidt they are actually a series of over passes and tunnels . according to a report by ADOT , they were constructed to provide a safe route for sheep .

  • Nice job Brent I crossed the dam a few days before they opened the bypass and closed the dam to traffic. I couldn't believe all the people and cars going across the bridge at that time. Now the bypass is done no waiting to get to phoenix or las vegas

  • Hmmmm , seems like a unfinished project the freeway abruptly ends in a odd way and the speed limit is too low should be 60mph.

  • @Nexis4Jersey: Yeah. The whole thing was actually already open as a 4 lane divided highway, but the final paving caused me to encounter 2 lane traffic restrictions. A bit of a bummer, but that's okay.

The speed limit will be raised to 65 MPH, once the overpasses and the access roads are complete, except for the final 2 miles, approaching the bridge. Thanks for watching. :-)

  • @Nexis4Jersey: Oh, and regarding your comment about the "unfinished" portion, the future Boulder City bypass will eventually construct a new freeway around the city, where the freeway abruptly comes to an end.

  • I watched on the phone. Yes I did catch that , and thx . We should post responses to eachothers video.

  • Nice job. Looks like they have made alot of progress along the stretch. I was proud I was one of the last few to ever cross over the old route and the Hoover dam. Thumbs up for sure

  • @ScrewdUPClickV2: I even mentioned your video of the old alignment in one of the annotations; about halfway thru the video, just in case you didn't notice.

  • Very nice, AZ & NV did a great job with that project. It looked like the jersey barriers on the bridge were too high to see anything, probably a good idea.

  • @Freewayjim: Yes the barriers were indeed too high to see anything, but I was prepared for that in advance, thanks to some raw footage that was uploaded onto YouTube in the first couple of days after the bridge opened.

Apparently, I missed being able to drive thru the construction zone w/o any of the temporary 2 lane traffic control restrictions, by just a couple of days. They were putting on a final layer of asphalt ; that is some of the smoothest pavement I've ever been on.
