I usually use porecalin, and a lot of water is fine when centering and first one or two pulls, but I sponge out all the water at the bottom of the pot after each pull, and use little water afterwards, just enough to make my hands slide, and eventually use the slip that forms as the lubricant, with little to no added water.
This potter technique is just like Japanese leading potters. We don't use so much water when throwing. Many may misunderstand. We don't throw with plenty of water, but with soft mud. If you
use too much water, the clay on the wheel becomes to loose and weak. In that sense he is a very good master for all and truly professional, from our point of view. MidnightLover
there's a bunch of videos from the uk on here where the potter uses BUCKETS full of water. he splashes it on and in the pot continually. but he throws great stuff, big stuff and it doesn't seem to matter.
it really depends on the clay you use. I throw with 4 different claybodies and all require different amounts of water and pulling techniques. Bmix and Sandstone are very similar prolly require the most water of the 4. A specialized throwing body has little to no grit to it and will require little water(you see this type on youtube alot). With porcelain, you almost have to use no water and I have a real hard time throwing with it.
That bowl is STILL not finished! It's so big it takes up an entire kiln shelf at the ceramics guild facility. Claudio will be back in the area in a few months and hopefully he'll finish it then.
Love what he did.

Imagine the dedication and skill required.
One is NOT supposed to be able to do this with clay.

Truly amazing. And a joy to watch. The music was a little distracting, though.

Wonderful work! What does his clay body consist of?
einey57 2 years ago
He used plain old Soldate - after letting it sit out of the bag overnight so it was dry enough for him.
lindamermaid 2 years ago
wow. On that less part the pot is thin AND threatening to fall apart ever second. How does he do it??
grompush 2 years ago
that bowl is RIDICULOUS! incredibly awesome.
redpotatofromafrica 2 years ago
Yeah, I never imagined he could go that wide with the walls as thin as he had them and no support near the bottom. How does he do that?
vibratehigher 2 years ago
He does that with very dry clay, very little water and 30+ years as a professional potter. He's truly amazing.
lindamermaid 2 years ago
very impressive , considering all the rude distractions he had to put up with !!!
FIRECRACKER392 2 years ago
he uses very little water when he throws
xelanil 3 years ago
No, he doesn't use much water at all. No water, hard clay, gritty soldate.... I'm afraid that would take my skin off!
lindamermaid 3 years ago
using a lot of water when throwing wide things can throw you off.

it's interesting isn't it.. in the US you hardly use any water and here in the UK we use lots... anyone know why???
donglabong 2 years ago
The clay we get here is very soft. More water=more weight and clay is sold by weight (good old US capitalism/greed). Maybe your clay is dryer.

seriously don't know how you did it. you walls looked to thin to early to have made what you did.

Claudio really is great. It's like watching magic that really is magic and not just a trick. And he makes it look soooo easy.

Amazing! I found myself holding my breath as you stretched it out. Would love to see how you finished it.
