  • @GenaTheGamer Zelda & metroid ain't childish though along with most Nintendo franchises:/

  • @windwakerpikmin Yes but the look of those games give them this repute.I played SM galaxie well I can´t say it´s way harder then crash bandicoot or the other jumpnRun games I played. But even Arch statet that Mario is for everybody so it´s for the Casual too, isn´t it? I peronal don´t care, Nintendo got a diffrent problem witch they didn´t solve with the wii and won´t solve it with the Wii U."We bring the Hardcore gamers back"-this won´t work like they thought -__-

  • @GenaTheGamer

why would that wotn work? ppl who say "were hardcore" are some of the most gulliable in the industry most of the time, the ppl who just refuse to like the wiiU will be ppl who wasent going to get any kind of nintendo console in the 1st place

  • @lylatfox4 Well for example nintendos Wii U lineup are almost only mutliplat titels that already came out or going to come out on the PC,PS3,xbox360. Imagine I don´t like mario that much and i could not care less about Zelda and the the other nintendo titels are not my type of games. Why should I jump from my Console/PC to the Wii U if there is no IP that really get me excited?Thats the big problem nintendo is going to get.there is no big reason for the gamer to byu it.

  • @GenaTheGamer

well I think to think the lineup will consist of only multiplats (these things are unavoidable of every launch now) is not seeing too far, there will be plenty of exclusives from the 1st party and 3rd party alike, theres already been 3 or so already confirmed for it, and as for nintendo games, i'd say give them a try, or give them a 2nd chance, u might find that u actually like them more then u thought

  • @lylatfox4 I played Ocarina of Time and Super Mario Galaxie and i´m really not into this kind of games.for me it seems they don´t change at all. A friend of mine wanted to lend me Skyward sword but I don´t think this game going to give me some new expierience i missed. It is Zelda like it was always Zelda. I game now Mass Effect 2 and Batman Arkham City those games and their look and story attract my interest more then the Nintendo franchise.

  • @GenaTheGamer how are any of those games plus Nintendo franchises easy Mario galaxy is harder than uncharted lol.

  • @GenaTheGamer than how is Wii a kiddy console?

  • @windwakerpikmin Well Nintendo had it really hard with the N64 and the Gamecube becorse the market was flooded with JumpnRun games like Konker, jack&dexter,Spyro,CBandicoot, ratched & Clank. It was the same problem we have now with shooters, there are to much of them out now. But Nintendo hadn´t no potential competition for their Mario so they sticked to it. It makes more profit for them to make the games with the well known Mario>>>>

  • @windwakerpikmin >>>>>Fact is that Nintendo aimed for the Casual gamers and the Nintendo fans.Casual want to play easy games (perfect on the wii) and the Nintendo fans NEVER complain about something from Nintendo. Games like Mario get alot of promotion but a Game like Calling never got the same promotion like Zelda or Mario. So all a Person sees is: "Nintendo is Mario+Zelda for Casuals and Fans of Nintendo=Kiddie. Maybe Nintendo wanted to be Kiddie at the start.

  • hey arch I have a topic idea, do you remember back in the early 90s Nintendo was supposed to be doomed when going up against SEGA but Nintendo ended getting up stronger on all sides, well isn't the same thing happening today people are saying the Wii U is Nintendo's last hope and will be crushed by the PS4 & 720, I would like to see how you analyze this. . .

  • @nandeska12 SEGA failed with their Dreamcast becorse they made Shenmu (awseome game) it was really expensive in development and in the end they said every Dreamcast owner had to buy this game TWICE to get BACK the money they spend for this game.(Asians are really great at Calculation *lol*)

Nintendo ain´t going to fail but in my eyes they waste their Inovation for all those Mario Games. Why should smoebody buy a new Console to play old games and 3rd Party games witch already exist?

  • @GenaTheGamer all those games you mentioned have blood & gore/fighting.

  • @windwakerpikmin *lol* yeah you can play and win Amnesia and Penumbra without to kill somebody same goes for Heavy Rain. Fatal Frame got ghosts and you use a Camera as a weapon (so no blood and no swarewords no gore) Deus Ex was a Mature game and it gave the player the chance play trough WITHOUT killing anybody. You see it´s harder than this video shows you how to seperate Mature from Kiddie. Calling is for 12 year old E-Rating but it´s an Mature game.

  • Arch you have great videos but in this one you just statet one side of Mature Games. In your video it looks like it takes ONLY blood, swarewords and gore and dark theme. This is a really ignorant sight don´t you think?

Heavy Rain didn´t had that stuff and had instead a mature story same goes for Fatal Frame an Silent Hill and Penumbra. Those games don´t got your notes but they are MATURE games with MATURE story.

  • Sociology plays a part as well. People will do what others are enjoying. If the general consensus is to play mw3, then a majority will own it.

  • I don't remember the last time i ran into someone that threw the term kiddie or adult gamer around. Then again i don't talk to/hang around idiots. xD

  • been about 1 weeks or so without internet, now i can finally enjoy ur A quality vids again :)

  • @lylatfox4 A whole week without internet?! How did you survive! :O

  • @Archimedies123

haha tht was actually a typo I meant 2 weeks and i didnt, i got revived somehow xD

  • Comment removed

  • Well fucking said man!! but I never made a big deal when I first played Mortal Kombat or Resident Evil when I wad a kid I just played them cause there fun not because they were bloody or gory. I never looked at the ESRB rating and said this game is awesome cause it's rated M for mature.

  • why is there less people like arch and moviebob where can i find more people like them?

  • Mature Gamer is becoming a term that is loosely thrown around today. Saying Nintendo franchises are for kids means you dont know what you're talking about

  • In all actuality I'm rarely attracted to a rated M game half of the time a rated m game has one or two scenes that wouldn't be put in a teen game. To me a kiddie game is one that has a childish theme like zhu zhu pets or elmo. A mature game is a game that goes beyond the cursing and gore and unravels itself in a way that only adults in most cases would be able to understand

  • Anyway, all I know is I've always liked the violent games more. Before there was even a rating system, back when I was a child. One of my favorite games back in the day was Splatterhouse on the TG-16. Not because it had a rating, but it was a cool, weird, kinda creepy game and you ended up having to beat your girlfriend to death trying to rescue her. The Immortal on the Sega Genesis was ten times more gory than anything in Mortal Kombat, but it didn't catch people's attention like MK did.

  • To me, game ratings don't even matter anymore. I look at the content of the game, see what it has to offer, and then I'll consider buying it.

  • DON'T TOUCH THE LIKE BUTTON! it's perfect right now

  • great vid, i think every gamer with that kiddie complex should watch this vid. i dont know how many people ive heard say mario is for little kids...can some one PLEASE show me a 4 year old that can beat SMB3 from start to finish?

  • Most of us started playing games as young kids. Most of us are in late teens, 20's and 30's still playing games. You damn well know most of you are going to be playing games far beyond that and yet here we are talking about age for games? Wow

  • great analysis once again

  • i'm really tired of people using a damn video game to define who i am and how "grown" i am. Being grown goes waaaaaaaaay deeper than "growing up" to a different type of video game. The hard8times guy is very childish himself for thinking that the guys playing mario games are "pedofileish". This world is so damn twisted when it comes to understanding these terms. Being grown is an important part of life, don't mix video games with it, THAT is childish.

  • @malcbear well said

  • @malcbear Well said! Education is key!

  • Your my favorite youtuber man! Keep on making those top quality vids

  • Mature is just what the ESRB rates games...

  • @Collinguy6 Indeed, but that rating was created by pissy parents trying to use video games as a reason why their kids acted up. And by doing that all they did was make even MORE kids want the games rated M.

  • The funniest thing is, what made me play Mortal Kombat back then wasn't "This game's got GORE! That is so cool! I need to play that!' it was "This game's got NINJAS...WITH SUPERPOWERS! That is so cool! I need to play that!'

  • I disagree with the analysis. Game ratings are not a gimmick. The only reason they even exist is because of parents not wanting children to play violent games like Mortal Kombat & Night Trap. It went to the US Senate in 1993, and that's when they rolled out the rating system: to determine what was or was not deemed acceptable for children to play, just like movies. And as far as "been there, done that", you've also been there, done Mario a thousand times over. So why's that get a pass?

  • @AgentMorgan2010 Because it's more tasteful than a lot of these needlessly "mature", gimmicky games?

  • @NickonAquaMagna2 lol. Says who?

  • @AgentMorgan2010 Oh great, so you're one of the people he's talking about in the video, who think the visuals of a game determine how good it is, while gameplay is insignificant, and blood and swearing are all you need to make a good game. Forget it, it's not worth trying to argue.

I'm not trying to say that adding those elements MAKES a game dumb and I'm not saying Mario is better because of the lack of those things. I just think the whole "darker is cooler" thing is stupid.

  • @NickonAquaMagna2 Ermm.. nooo. I never said any of those things, so please don't put words in my mouth or make rash assumptions.

And very good. Then you should get what I'm saying. And what I saying is it that comes down to you. If darker is cooler or not. Whether you're "oldschool" or not has nothing to do with it. I think darker IS cooler. Not that gameplay is insignificant, or that blood and swearing is all I need, but generally I prefer a serious tone. But I also like variety.

  • @AgentMorgan2010 Sorry, I deal with a lot of stupid Sonicfags and they tend to get to me after a while and skew my perception of gamers in general.

Anyway, I guess it is about personal preference, but I've played a lot of videogames in my time, and it often seems as though a lot of the grittier games out there tend to have weak gameplay that gets stale pretty fast, while more "kiddy" games often have more inspired gameplay. Not all the time, but pretty often.

  • @NickonAquaMagna2 Nah, man. I hear ya, there's no denying Mario and Zelda's level design and gameplay. That's why I still play those games. They're all about gameplay for me. And if you've played Mario for a long time, there's a lot references and throwbacks to the old games a 5 year-old wouldn't catch. Like the Super Mario World level in SMG2. But then when you get into the story content of Mario, especially SMG1, I felt like I was in preschool, man. And I couldn't skip it. That's why SMG2>SMG1

  • @AgentMorgan2010 The reason why I call the rating a gimmick is because that's what a lot of people use as a way of trying to show how cool or adult they are. What really made it work so well was as I said the mature rating pulls in kids since it makes them want to be " cool like the adults" but also pulls in adults as they feel rated E = for kids. Doesn't mean this was all done intentionally, but it's worked out that way for quite awhile.

  • @AgentMorgan2010 With mario best way I can explain that is...take out all mario chars and replace them with darker characters and ask yourself would you feel as though you were playing the same game. Obviously everyone's not gonna like mario and so insult someone just because they dont like it is rather childish. This vid was more of a what made new gamers see mario as kiddy.

  • @Archimedies123 I see what you're saying. And I don't know who actually uses the ratings to show they're cool or why they would do that, but I would liken it to the motion picture ratings. Typically, G-rated movies are childrens films and R-rated films are adult films. Plenty of adults enjoy G-rated Disney animated films and plenty of children like violent R-rated films. But they have an primary, intended audience.

  • I'm liking this before I even watch. I'm sure you won't disappoint.

  • @drtre81 well hopefully it didn't. :)

  • @Archimedies123

Its like underage kids drinking. Its awesome until you turn 21 to when its just something of the norm

  • @BLACKB0ND eeeexactly

  • I used to be fooled by this mature thing.

When I was in 2nd grade, I would only play Goldeneye, because that was the only shooting game I had back then. I thought that playing Goldeneye instead of Mario 64 made me cooler.

But now, I'm in 8th grade, I'm 14, and I could still play a game like Mario and enjoy it, unlike a lot of other people my age.

  • perfect video man.great theory about it all. completely defines it all, in a very logic, archimidies type way :D

  • @gamereviewsss tis what I do :)

  • dude u have the best videos

  • I thank you arch for explaining. However, most of the Nintendo fanboys are raging about it, and Rev is trollbaiting even more. Classic entertainment á la Youtube. And the ratings are as you say, made by parents to make other parents not buy their kids games. I have for measure that if a game has a measure of strategy in it, kids/new gamers tend to keep away from them. For example Battlefield vs MW or Karting games vs GT5/Forza. Still its fun to see people rage. =P

  • My first generation was the PS1/N64 gen. Back then yes. I would drool to get an M rated game. My aunt spoiled me and bought me those games when my parents weren't aware and that mean't something. It's an infinite gimmick that will never die out. Now a days I look for challenge, level design, story and uniqueness. The hollywood pop corn explosion only works on new schoolers IMHO

  • i think the "kiddie" games are the real mature games, or actually the games mostly played by adults. cuz Mario and games like that are mostly played by adults who grow up with Mario. And while shooters is played by lots of different people can i bet that the majority of them that attack Mario and games like that for being "kiddie" games are kids who think they are cool.

  • Now I want to know: Why can't I be 18 and still love to play Pokemon?

  • @mastercrobat16 lol you can still be 18 and play pokemon, im older than you and i play pokemon.

  • @NerdyTalk101 Well, I understand I CAN, but I'm talking about how people will say "Pokemon's for children so grow up (my younger sister who doesn't even know gaming and thinks CoD is what the "REAL" gamers play)," or "anything after (insert generation here) is bad, so your playing a bad game." Those people tend to piss me off.

    I ranted lol.

  • the professor speaks

  • I think most people are grown out of the milked rehashes that Nintendo produces. People like these are not afraid to say that they enjoy games like Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time because they're both retro and being retro is cool. For example "You know back when Nintendo used to make good games." But when giving the opportunity to play games like Super Mario Galaxy and Skyward Sword they say no and rather play Cod.

  • To me its all about challenge, difficulty, complexity. Like I said in the comments of another vid, Little Nemo the Dream Master on NES looks about as kiddie as it gets, but it's known for its blister causing difficulty (I'm one of the few people I know who beat the damned thing.)

  • @the7thlevl Fun factor aside, look at it this way: Mario Galaxy: not kiddie. Mario Is Missing: Kiddie. If it basically plays itself, if the story structure is overly simplistic, if the controls are very basic and dumbed down... another example: the Raving Rabids series. You look at graphics and shake your controller. Any kid who had a rattle when they were a baby can play those games.

  • @the7thlevl if it plays itself and the story is overly simplistic them its kidde. And here I thought FF13 was just a piece of shit. But since u put it that way, its not too bad for a kiddie game.

  • Arch, you remind me of the Game Over thinker.

  • Damn, quick with the response this time! XD

  • @the7thlevl Yea when the topic came up it didn't take long before I realized "hey I can make a vid about this". since i actually had some things I wanted to say about this topic.

  • I went through that "I'm too old for this 'n that" when the PS1/N64 came out. I ignored any quality games that came out on the N64 cos at the time I thought "they were kiddy" compared to the games on the PS1...... I was about 17 at that time. It wasn't until around the end of the Gamecube era that I snapped out of that shit... I went back and played Paper Mario, the Zeldas, etc, and realised.... having that way of thinking made me miss out of GREAT GAMES! Today, I'd rather play SMG than COD!

  • I still believe in "kiddie" but, only when it's PISS easy like Kirby Epic Fa- I mean Yarn. It plays hand in hand with the "hardcore/casual" gamer in my eyes. If it's a challenge that requires practice, time, strategy, or all of the above kids won't play that. I play DoDonPachi. First boss is a giant robot girl in a japan school outfit. Kiddie? I guarantee stage 3 will make most kids QQ and maybe break something. Who would have more patience? Big boys. Great vid man. Always thought provoking! :D

  • Again, you explain something PERFECTLY

  • SolidRev needs to watch this.

  • @chobo500 I've deebated this issue re: Ratchet and Clank with him for two years, dude's never gonna budge. XD

  • The background music interferes with what you're saying in the vid.

    >:(

  • I hope gamers of today watch this video, they need to.

  • Hard for me to relate to this mindset as I grew up playing the likes of Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3d, Lemmings and the Dig which are different from one another and targeted at different groups. I always focused on core gameplay and the originality of the experience more so than the aesthetic value, and/or the addition of vulgarity, violence and sex. I guess I understand the polarising effect of playing COD followed by Mario, but one never detracted from my enjoyment of the other.

  • Achi, my man. Always top-notch videos.

  • @Shokio thanks man

  • I love Arch's Analysis of things ^_^

  • my friend actually believes that the rating defines the game and refuses to watch this video because you defend mario and believes you automatically lose lol

  • @highlander5523 lmao, guess I lose then :P

  • well this is all true

  • I fuckin knew it. I knew he was gonna make a video about this. It was only a matter of time.

Gathering evidence, looking at all views, and form an Analysis that not only makes sense, but pwns n00bs who follow the Gaming Media.

  • @teddybruscie Looks like you got me figured out :)

  • @Archimedies123 Yea I'm kinda good predicting things like this. It was really kinda inevitable. I knew you were gonna touch on this topic sooner or later and Hard8times said the right things for this issue to be addressed.

  • damn you are the best, we think alike.

  • This guy is "THE PROFESSOR OF GAMING"

  • @dweem2009able I try :D

  • @Archimedies123 i guess im a old school gamer then >_>

  • the rating dont matter its about the gameplay.... how solid it is and stuff i would play spongebob if it was any good on the GAMEPLAY

  • Oh yea, i was playing wil sports the other day with my cousins and i had more fun playing that then i had playing MW3. Wil Sports>MW3

    ROFL!!!

  • Fu*king Awesome. I laugh at the new skool so called "hardcore" gamers who call them self hardcore because they only play CoD all day lmao. I had that same mindset when i was 7-8 years old thinking i was a hardcore gamer and a grown up because i was playing Doom and Silent Hill on the Playstation. The sad part is that these "hardcore gamers" are teenagers and grown men with the same child like mindset i had back then ROFLMAO!!! This video nails it on the money.

  • Well said good vid.

  • @Coldice7000 thx :)

  • So pretty much its an experienced gamer mentality vs a noobs mentality

  • @NovaFeenix lol, if that's what you wanna call it :P

  • imma hardcore mature gamer i stand by a grown man system that stand and i backed you don't XD

  • Sounds like your going into or coming off a cold of some kind

  • @IcyRhythms Yea getting over it.

  • gosh man your so smart, and its sad that these new school gamers are being fooled by the same trick that kids are.

  • @ZigTheHunter They have to experience it before they can learn from it. :)

  • Kiddie games to me are simple gameplay, things that can be fun but require no real strategy, or the game may have a story driven by a fixed sense of morality instead of a dynamic one that questions the player.

  • @RevJesseJackson

so call of duty in a nutshell

  • @highlander5523 I'd say it's included, along with mk, disney universe, and many more. There's obviously spectrums; for the reaction fps genre I would say it would go from cod, a simple point and click with a medium speed that rewards bad players, to tribes ascend, a fast, objective based shooter with projectile weapons and constant motion on an x,y and z axis. The most basic games to the most complex, i.e. the grand strategy genre. I wouldn't say I dislike kiddy aesthetics, just "dumb" games.
