The best version I've heard is an old record of my grandmother's by Readers Digest. The orchestra was a British one, maybe the BBC one, can't remember. But it is excellent.
Tempo at the beginning is a tig too quick for my personal taste, but still enjoyable. I'm a lover of the whole of "Messiah", but especially the Overture.
Some minor intonation issues, but nice recording. Thanks for sharing :) Great way to start my morning, especially with the season now being what it is :-D
It has nothing to do with appropriateness. It's all interpretation. Faster tempos can be exciting, but you can lose intonation and precision to some degree. Also at slower tempos, the piece has more shape, and you can do more with dynamics and expressions. I do like this version, but I like it because it's exciting, not because it's appropriate.
