@chrismorale LOL!!!...YESSIR! I can't believe ppl don't know about this. Can't believe it wasn't picked to be a single for the radio back in the day...it would've been played all the time!
Why cant we have more music like this. The groove here is just fantastic. I grew up playing my drums to this music. I learned a great deal of groove drumming from these artist. Great playlist MsTexas73. Its nice to know some people still have great taste in music.....Peace
@Blewline67 Hey...thanks for listening AND COMMENTING. I much appreciate it.
Yeah, Music like this is the soundtrack of my life. And I'm espially always trying to expose poeple to the OTHER sides of the 5th Dimension. They were ALWAYS MORE THAN JUST POP.
I only just found this song, never heard it before. Enjoyed reading the debate. You could have mentioned the fantastic "wall of sound" orchestration. It also reminds me of the Temptations , who had a lot of great music out at the same time ("Masterpiece" !) - Thanks a lot for posting all that wonderful music !!
The 5th could sing anything .. pop. soul. jazz, funk ... Other songs not mentioned by Noodledoo that brought out the FUNK in the 5th - Eli's Coming, Shake Your Tamborine, Ticket To Ride .. Unique group of 5 voices that had something for anybody that listened to them .. It's been 40 yrs & the songs still find new listeners & cross barriers ..
And let's not forget their live take on "I Just Wanna Be Your Friend" ...OH and what about "Puppet Man"...that was kinda funky. And "Too Poor to Die" and "Train Keep On Movin" weren't necessarily funk...but they were sho nuff funky. I noticed there were some songs that COULD have been and probably would have been classified as Soul/R&B if there were just a few chord changes made in the arrangment. But then had that been done, they probably wouldn't have been released as singles.
In the end, the 5th had to be one of the MOST versatile groups in music history .. They could sing pop, soul, jazz, funk, gospel .. Can't think of too many other groups that can do that ..
The 5th had a lot of funk songs with Billy on lead--it's just that almost nobody got to hear them. Listen to "Half Moon," "I've Got a Feeling," "I Want to Take You Higher," "Don't Stop for Nothing," "Feeling Alright" and others. IMO Billy is THE Great unrecognized soul singer of the 60's and 70's. He was always pushing for the group to get funkier, and they started to in the 70's, but disco took over and soul was pretty much dead by 1980.
Going to disagree here as far as soul being dead...soul NEVER died...it just took a back seat to pop and the lighter *R&B* & in the early 80s that's when the funk bands were HOT....think Cameo and ConFunkShun for example.
I think this song is THEE Funkiest of any tune that would be classified as funky for the 5th. But I agree the others you mentioned were also pretty funky for the time. I think the group should have listened to Billy; maybe they would not have split had that happened.
Speaking of "Half Moon"...I was playing Individually & Collectively and Living Together, Growing Together in the car today and I swear I must have played "Half Moon" like ten times. The arrangement on down to Billy's leads and the fierce backing vocals on that. Yeah Baby!
I'm beginning to appreciate I&C and LTGT lps just a little more every time I listen.
I was watching the 1974/75 episode of Soul Train today where they performed "Soul & Inspiration" and "Harlem"...I think that they should have had three segments in that eppy...and they should have performed this song LIVE. I bet that even if it weren't a single and they performed it on the Big Train, the album sales would have risen cuz the ST gang sho nuff would've boogied to this.
This is funky! With as many times, I have heard The 5th Dimension, over the years, I never heard them ever do funk music before, and to be quite honest with you...I never thought that they could, until now. If this record came out in 1974, it probably got lost, in the beginning of all of that disco music, such as Barry White, KC and the Sunshine Band, Carl Douglas, The Philly Sound, and the list goes on. They are sounding more like The Temptations than The 5th Dimension on this one. Nice post!
I really appreciate your comments and I'm GLAD you like it! When I first got this lp and took a listen *I hadn't heard this song from there before or atleast I didn't remember it* I was like WOW! and this wasn't a single why? Doesn't Billy have a little Johnny Taylor flair here? Definitely a song the group was jamming on.
lovely video...the best singing group of all time...thanks for posting.

I don't think it was released as a single...I think the only singles were "Soul and Inspiration" and "Harlem"..Maybe "No Love in the Room".
I think HAD it been released as a single and gotten radio play...it would have AT LEAST been a hit on the R&B charts.
MsTexas73 2 years ago
No doubt! Because it is definitely funky!!! That group and their sound never cease to amaze.
