6:26 Completely serious this video actually did change my life. I was watching this almost 2 years ago while in the middle of a dead-end collegiate career in history when I decided to quit and pursue my love of technology and design into game development. Thanks Alton for the Good Eats and the inspiration to roll the big dice.
Cooking has become a lost art. Professional Chefs retain that art, but what about home cooks? I always felt that AB always broke things down on a scientific level for untrained chefs. It's like instructing and teaching but making it fun to learn rather then be something that makes you not give a crap.
I knew he has an encyclopedic knowledge of food and preparation and is very talented - I didn't know he was so brave as to walk away from a successful career to do Good Eats - but it figures... a true power of example - the show is awesome! Thanks Alton Brown.
Certainly interesting thoughts, but.....a bit hard to say to the wife and kids "Hey, Daddy's quitting his 80k a year job, we're downsizing the house because I have a dream of singing on Broadway or whatever..."
But at the same time would you want you children to settle rather than live their dreams? You can live comfortably off of a lot less than 80k a year. Now there is a difference between going off only half determined and truly being willing to work hard for your dream. One is beautiful the other irresponsible. But all of that is for the individual and their families to decide and discuss.
What a great interview. I have loved and enjoyed watching Alton for years but now after seeing this, I find him so inspirational! What a wonderful mind, talent, and person. Bravo, Alton! :D

i watch food network and to sum this guy up:
1) he makes dishes way harder to cook than they should be (look up his chocolate syrup - lol! )
2) Speaks down to us as if we don't know a thing about food
3) Who ridiculously smug.
4) Wishes he could cook as good as the iron chefs, so he "throws them under the bus" with his cheap comments
My mom paid $35 to see his seminar and hates his guts now because she didn't learn a thing. It was just him getting a big ego boost in front of a large crowd.
Also, about the chocolate syrup recipe... What exactly is harder than it needs to be? It isn't any more complicated than others. Boil water then dissolve all the other ingredients? What is hard about that? Is this a joke post?
1) From what I've seen most of his dishes are much easier to cook than many recipes I've found online or in cook books.
2) Most of the things he explains are very new to me and not only allow me to cook up the one recipe he created but also to understand how things work together to be able to create my own dish.
3) I wouldn't say he's smug. That seems silly. How would you ever convince anyone of anything if you didn't believe it yourself?
4) I don't know what shows you have been watching but if the judge on a show just says good job and doesn't outline exactly what they do and don't like about a performance I would be personally insulted. I am a vocalist and if my teacher just said good job. Your performance sounded pretty I would believe they didn't care or pay attention at all. Of course with most shows on TV any more judging isn't actually meant to show any expertise.
i love this show! nobody actually believes i like to cook, much less like this show, they all think the only thing i do in the kitchen is get knives. I AM NOT EMO!!!!!!!!!!! god!
sorry, just trying to get my point across. i just can't stand some people who are so stereotypical and ugh. never mind. good video though.
dangit, this interview should have been a lot better, with more details!! Clips from the pilot?? Instead I'm watching a cheesy business seminar with Alton Brown as a guest :P Maybe it's time he went on 60 minutes ;) I wanna know more! Thx for the upload, though, anything AB is much appreciated david!
Alton is inspirational. He combines high intelligence with comedy; a win-win combination. On top of that he is a really nice guy. My hubby and I together with our kids met him at a GE demonstation in Kansas City and he stood and chatted with over 100 fans patiently and with a huge smile for everyone. Thanks Alton but being you.
Alton Brown is great. He hosted Turner Classic Movies for a day, selecting which classic films were shown. And, he said that he considered himself more of a camera man than a cook. Which I thought was pretty cool.
lol coming from a guy who plays guitar?? lmfao! At least Alton can teach me to do something USEFUL in my life... and I'm a guy who loves cooking, not a fat old lady...
Lol... I'm 22 5' 10'' and 140 lbs. I think a guy who can cook is attractive. I won't say that is the only thing that attracts me to someone but it is definitely a plus. It is kinda sick to stereotype people like that. And anyway he is a genuinely good looking individual. I wouldn't say he's the hottest guys I've seen but he isn't unattractive and he's funny. Women in general care more about personality than men think.
Bitch, I made that comment like a year ago. Hope off my nuts. I started this whole "he's attractive to old, fat woman" a year ago, and you dumb fucks are still falling for my troll. Get a life.
I had a boss that looked exactly like Alton Brown.
P.S. I love Alton Brown. the way he presents and educates people about food has made me try many things that I never would have before. example - I hated shrimp until I saw the Good Eats on shrimp

1) He tweaks dishes. I think it's interesting, and you don't have to follow it.
2) Not everyone knows what you know; I didn't know most of the stuff he explains.
3) What's wrong with smug? - I think it's actually just confidence.
4) He's a commentator; all commentators talk like that - sports commentators second guess coaches constantly, so is all that commentary 'cheap'?
My opinion is that he's modest, but confident. His show is campy, and perhaps not for everyone, but great fun for me
