Believe it or not, tornadoes have been known to spawn in January for quite a while. It's just the ones that do damage that make the news. They are rare in January, but it's not something that just started happening rececently. As a matter of fact, November is also known as a second but smaller peak period for tornadoes. The fall and winter months get some of the worse tornadoes to hit also. A tornado can spawn in any month of the year. Peak month is May followed by June in the USA.
Well I live in this area and lost to big hay barn, on january 6, it was cold like 15-20 degrees with 5-10 inches of snow. On the next day, the HUGE warm front came and warmed up to 70 degrees. melt all the snow away but not all of them and makes into EXTREME foggy causing to have a Great major storm. So after the on that day, the temp drop down to 20's degrees. Very STRANGE.
Holy shit. haha. Awesome footage of the semi, i live about a mile or two from where this happened the tornado here had literally just went through my neighborhood, derailed a train, then continued on to apparently hit the semi. Crazy weather, especially for January.
I seen the tornado coming S-N. The hail started to hit and people started getting out of their cars in the open and laying on the side of the road of E-43. I pulled over to tell people get in their cars and drive, don't let it come and hit you. Less than 2 minutes later it passed behind us. It was still a crappy day all of the way to Milwaukee I heard tornado and flood warnings.
this was crazy i remember this i was in the basement though and i remember going by the train and the semi that flipped that was awsome!!!! oh well obviously i live in harvard
holy shit dude i live in Harvard i Remember taht me and my friends were waiting for Basketball Practice so we walked to the Gas Station and we herd that there was a tornado holy shit
I was 2 minutes ahead of the semi that was flipped over. taking a left off 14 heading towards lawrence I was heading right into it not realizing this until a metal shed flew across the road about 100 yards in front of me and one of them big country trees tipped over blocking me from driving through. I put my car in park and rode it out. You talk about HOLY SHIT!!!
Don't worry about the language - I'd be saying worse than holy shit ... LOL! Amazing capture - wow. In January, yet - don't expect that, you know? The third tornado I was in was January, 17, 1996: lost my roof in that one. Only an EF-0, but once the roof goes ... you know? LOL Five stars, adding to "Tornado" playlist, thanks. =]
man thats freaky harvard is pretty damn close to where i live, we play harvard in football thats pretty freaky, we've had tornado watches the past 7 days
Dude, was that 23 or route 14? 14 goes through Harvard into Bigfoot, but 23 ends at 14 just southeast of the Walmart. Doesn't it? Great footage, by the way.
XerxesXavi - please read upper right side of this page before posting (more info button)... this has been noted several times already, just a simple mistake having traveled N on 23 to get to Harvard then hop onto 14 and simply forgot the road number.
by this time in the video it was rated at an EF1 if i remember correctly. it had reached ef3 ratings near poplar grove. however at the point it reached hwy 14 it was lifting as it crossed the road, or that barn would have suffered a lot worse. At the beginning of the video you can see it being very sizable (rain obscuring) I wouldnt doubt had more buildings been in its way it would have been close to EF2 or EF3 at the end there.
it almost took out my house . it sounded like a freakin freight train going past my house..
good thing my relatives called me other wise i would have been cooked TOAST! cuz i was watching a movie and i didn't know it was coming . so i thanked them for calling me like a 100 times! i will never forget that day
i went through that tornado and i almost crapped my fricken pants it was like a freaking freight train went through and i am glad i lived through it!! Good Video ..THANKS!
Nice video! You forgot to mention that the tornado also derailed a train in Lawrence, IL not to far away from were you were in Harvard. The town was evacuated because one of the cars that derailed was carrying highly flammable liquid used to sterilize medical equipment.
No sweat. It's not everyday you get to see tornadoes up close. It was an easy mistake. I appreciate your enthusiasm! I knew you knew where you were from your description, "north of Harvard, south of Bigfoot". It's the way the roads are laid out that gets confusing!
In response to some of the questions left here, I was aware of where i was at at all times, I just got soo excited that I had gotten the route number mixed with the one I traveled to get to this area. We came from Marengo and traveled route 23 to get to Harvard, hence why I was saying 23 instead of 14, so for those who don't like the fact that I was saying rt 23 sorry excitement got to me. I think most would be excited.
yeah i live like 15 minutes away from there. and yeah right by harvard. that's been like the first tornado sinse i was born. do you guys live in harvard?
If you are familiar with the area, Route 14 and Rt. 23 become one just south of town. From there 23 splits off of Rt. 14 across the WI border so it's understandable how this mistake could be made. Although, if I didn't know that it would definitely be confusing. To their credit they gave more of a description..."north of Harvard, south of Bigfoot". That's a pretty narrow area for location. I say great job on capture but be more careful next time.
i gotcha, to bad the all clear siren couldnt have like a different tone to it or somethin, then ya could just keep the warning one on none stop to make sure no one would have and excuse not to here it,
videoramon: They are 3 mins sirens. All set up to NOAA and NWS standards. They are tested every Tuesday at 10:30 am (unless dispatch is very busy which happens sometimes) Once the NWS has sent out an all clear message, we sound the alarm again. Residents need to be aware of the alarm and what it means. I'm in the process of making sure something is done to fix that.
Nice vid on the Tornado. The tornado even hit Poplar Grove, destroyed Edward's Apple Orchard. Sucks... and I was thinking about apple donuts a few days before it happened too.
well that suckx to know that ill never hear a siren from where i work unless im out side, and so u dont keep the siren going while the tornado is strolin around harvard?
This happened on Rt. 14 in Harvard NOT Rt. 23. There were luckily NO deaths. Thank God!! Anyways though, thanks for posting the video, as I was not in town and would have liked to seen it.
to videoramon: the sirens actually sounded 5 mins prior to the tornado touchdown in Harvard. How do I know? I'm the person who pushed the button when the NWS advised the Harvard PD that it was in Capron and heading out direction. The siren that sounded approximately 8 mins after the tornadoe left the Harvard area is the "all clear" siren that is required per NOAA standards. Know your facts before you say anything wrong.
ok so u did, u guys at all upset that no one is willing to say on the record that there was an actual tornado, think it has anything to do with the fact that the sirens didnt come on until it had left harvard!?
man that tornado when right by me, my dad and I were in a ditch, thanks for putting this video up, I live in popular grove, thanks bro, now I got proof, now everyone will believe me
I statred watching this cell that developed a half hour after the SPC issued the tornado watch on Doppler. As it hit in the Loves Park/Popular Grove/Harvard area, it grew like the Hulk, headed into Wisconsin and really reeked havaoc in Kenosha County. I'm hoping to see any vids clips from that one in Wheatland. Great job on this vid guys.
i had a perfect view of this thing from the third floor of the old motorola building, it was heading straight to the building but as soon has it got to rt 14 it whent straight north blowin transformers, it was crazy, i dont know why these guys kept saying rt 23? no wonder the scanner was filled with confusion, and them sirens didnt even come till it was all over with!
i was standing on third floor of the old motorola building i had a perfect view of that thing as it rode along rt 14 it was heading straight torwards the building, which gave me a very uneasy feeling realizing i was on the third floor, but as soon as hit 14 it changed direction straight north, picking up depree and blowin transformers as it went, it was nice to here the sirens go off after everthing was all over!
I live in Loves park a few miles away from were the tornado hit. I heard the sirens go off and then saw the funnel right over riverside and mulford. Then the winds took it and it hit harvard. Great video, I drover by the scene and from what I saw it wasnt looking good.
This is one amazing video of the tornado in Harvard! I can't believe the guys almost got intercepted themselves as they were ONLY a few hundred feet from the actual tornado!!
haha i was so scared last night! i live in belleville but we were under a watch also..now i gotta go to school today knowing we might still be under a watch again today. god. lol oh and what type of tornado is this? (if u know) i couldnt exactly tell if it were a F3 but idk its hard to tell. thanks! (STAY SAFE PPL...lol)
Rich and Dave did some great photography here.. I finally put it all together so we could get it online. The TV stations got the just the Tornado / No Sound version for obvious reasons lol. I will have a stronger quality one placed on the site before the end of the week.
Most definately some *crazy* weather to hit the northern US this early in the year. Highs were in the 60s and 70s, with 35 (yes, thirty-five) seperate tornado reports into the Storm Prediction Center on Monday, January 7th alone. This is not counting any reports that may have occured on Sunday, or may occur Tuesday. Absolutely incredible weather for January.
