CTCV is a sign of the police's frustration at their inability to stop graffiti. The authorities have foolishly turned this into a war and are in the final stages of losing that war.
Was recently just in Melb and was wondering about local opinion on a few writers I saw up. Cos I'm from Sydney and only bieng in Melb for 3 days i dont know if the following listed writers are actually any good or not:
PNOID, FEACHA, PUNK, OAF, SERGIO, MUSCLE, PROPS, I SPY, LENCH, PILFER, DATA, POKIE, DIABLO, TAKE, ULCER. Any comment on any of these writers would be appreciated as these are the ones I happened to see a bit in my short stay, and limited travels. Cheers from Sydney. -->123k OBC*
The Government will never ban spray paint. The government is making money from it, as long as the Australia brand spray paints like, Ironlak, Crunch, Razor Paint, Aeroskillz ect. dont go out of buissness. they are helping to stimulate the Australian economy. and if they did ban it, they would lose money and just about every writer will protest. i hope they dont continue to fight us, but at the moment, we are wining.
Covering a Banksy is a really interesting point... He is now recognised as a 'legitimate' working artist. Covering his work is like finding an old 'SAMO' tag and protecting it because it was written by Basquiat. If other graffiti artists were to break through into the conventional 'art world', then it may be protected in the streets more. Until then, it will mostly be seen as an act of vandalism by unknown 'artists'.
I think it is a really smart move to cover the Banksy up. You can't cut it out and put it in a gallery; that would destroy its legitimacy as a 'street' artwork and also therefore, its meaning and position as an artistic statement. But you can cover it so that it can be preserved and viewed in its original context.
I generally agree with covering the Banksy up, it will help to legitimise graffiti as an art form. however we aren't seeing it "in its original context" anymore really.....graffiti is supposed to be ephemeral and temporary--no one puts up graffiti truly believing it will stay there forever, especially not someone like Banksy....
Although, temporary and ephemeral works sometimes tend to hang around; the Eiffel Tower was originally supposed to be a temporary structure for the (correct me if I'm wrong...) 1901 World's Expo. And the Hubble Telescope was only supposed to last several months, now it's just been repaired to last another seven years! Intention doesn't always match actual longevity!
yeah you're right about that, but i suppose the difference is that the eiffel tower is millions of tons of iron, and the cost of replacing the hubble telescope would be tens of billions of dollars---neither of these things would logically be ripped down and carted away for scrap. i see the wall itself as the piece of artwork, claimed by the people who walk past it. its just my view, but no one piece of art is greater than the philosophy of graffiti (ie its transient and fleeting nature)
i really dont see the point in CTCV?? i dont do any graffiti (i wish i could). but does anyone else see the irony in fighting graffiti with graffiti? Most graffiti looks amazing (such as the ones in your video) it is art and would commuters and the public rather look at brick walls everyday? spraying CTCV over the art just makes it looks terrible and messy..
this is awesome graff by the legendary AFP crew the crew is old and into their 40's u think they wood just do it for fun wen there this old. its coz they love it and graffiti is like a way of life to alot of ppl coz they have nuthin else so all u dikheads saying its shit u can fuk off
Twits! You cost taxpayers millions!!! Money that could be spent on hospital beds, etc... If you want to paint, buy some canvas and paint. No? You want to do damage, huh? Grow up, infantile wanna-be LA gangsters!!!
Haha. It's that simple is it? Local and State Government neglect the health budget to remove graffiti do they? Haha. Your energies would be better focussed on SUPPORTING the establishment of sanctioned spaces for those who wish to paint legally. By supporting the artistic development of the graffiti scene you ACTIVELY encourage the reduction of malicious vandalism and promote artistic expression within YOUR local community. Imagine that. But I suppose its easier to stand on your soap box, right?
You are wrong, Frogurt343, I have nothing against legally sanctioned graffiti or the provision of more public spaces for it to be displayed. There is no doubt, however, that the malicious vandalism causes us all great public expense. Here's an example: A scratched image on a train window: replacement cost...$600. Multiply that a few times and you have the wage for a nurse to be hired for a couple of weeks. That was the point of my original post.
Tripsadelica, I concede that wanton vandalism puts unnecessary stress on community budgets. But there is close to none of what you are talking about shown in the above video. My point is that the more you throw around insults and generalisations, the more you push the subculture down as a whole. This brings about an 'us against them' attitude; the net effect of which is MORE damage and LESS creativity. Prejudice is not conducive to finding an equilibrium between graffiti writers and community.
Are you sure, Frogurt343, that the works in this video were all sanctioned by the owners of the underlying "canvas"?A few years ago my family home's front fence was regularly daubed with various painted messages and images. Some of the stuff was just rubbish but some could, in the light of cool reason, be seen as quite creative BUT the "artists" never sought our permission to paint the fence and it cost us bucketloads to clean the darned thing. That's where my prejudice was generated, my friend.
Again, tripsadelica I'm not arguing the cost of graffiti or the legalities; that would take much more than 500 characters. All I'm TRYING to point out is that generalising your prejudice is counter productive to your means (assuming you would like to see a reduction in destructive vandalism). The more hostility you project the more retaliation you will see. Primitive as that is, it's a reality.
Also, having served on a number of school councils I can tell you that the cost to clean the regular graffiti attacks was astronomical! the last school I served had a regular annual graffiti cleaning bill of approximately $3000. Again, some of the "artwork" was just nonsense daubings but other "works" might be considered to be creative. Again...no permission was sought.
Additionally, the more you voice your discontent in this way the more local government reacts with rash counter action; such as the removal of legal spots, the unauthorised buffing of sanctioned walls and the blanket prohibition of spray cans. The result is a sea-sawing fight of action vs reaction, the benfits of which favour neither the local community or the graffiti community. Ps. For interests sake, many of the pieces in that video are painted in abandoned locations or are sanctioned
Ur kidding!? i got a fine for having a nap on a connex train the other night might i add i was probly 1 of 3 people in the entire carrage and on my way to work.. i put my feet on the seats to take a bit of a nap. and got fined for it..
tore up the fine... i refuse to pay that im a hard worker just like most people
That ctcv guy has sprayed that tag over the front of just about every piece all the way up and down the sydenham and sandringham lines and probably more. I just moved here from perth where the buff that shit off daily. There are pieces here that have been around for 10-15 years, and he just scrawls all over it.

28 seconds in. The piece by 'Mike'.
I've noticed him HEAPS in the last few weeks while on the Sandy line. Especially from Sandy to Gardenvale.

The CTCV stands for 'Cops Taking Control of Victoria'.
The Police in Melbourne have people specially done this to pretend like REAL taggers and are there to catch them out.
I notice the 'CTCV' Tag on the Sandringham, Frankston and the Glen Waverly Line which I've caught once.
I'm a regular on the Sandy and Frankston Line and it's a REAL shame they have to do this to those wonderful pieces.
I love being on the Frankston Line between Malvern and Sth Yarra. Armadale is the best for pieces.
