These two always make some great music when they're together. Some one asked who the other musicians are in the group. The guitar player is Hiram Bullock. He unfortunately passed away not too long ago. The drummer I believe is Omar Hakim. The bass, percussionist, and piano player I don't remember. I recognize them all but forgot their names. Guess I'm gettin' old. I feel bad I don't remember their names.
@camarondelapeninsula The other saxophonist is David Sanborn. They've collaborated several times in the past. They're always a pleasure to hear together. Two different styles coming together to make some great music.
@loveyourach Phil Woods is great but he didn't school Sanborn - he was just vibing him. Listen to him make fun of Sanborn's solo at the start of his own. The jazz police never give Sanborn the credit he deserves - he may not have the vocab of a Charlie Parker or Sonny Stitt, but the brother's playing is funky and legit as hell and he's got his own voice, something you can't say about most Bird imitators.
Nothing but props to both guys here. Willow and All Blues just go so well together. I kinda liked David's solo more than Phil, but regardless, both are monster players. Also, props to the drummer, he laid down some sick stuff right there.
@luisitosax Acts like a clown? That's called a sense of humor. The ability to have fun with a solo is part of Woods genius and part of what makes REAL jazz so great.
@ScottDT1 uhhmm..maybe but I see he was just watching what Dave was playing ..and when he start making his solo, he imitate the altissimo and the body movement of Dave. Not an ethic issue IMHO.
@luisitosax Phil is bebop player. Part of the tradition is "cutting" where you try to outdo the other players. Part of that is imitating a bit of what they just played. It is a little poke that says "I can do that too" and is usually done in good humor. Watch or listen to a lot of bebop or blues guitar jams and you will see it all the time.
total ripoff of all blues? yes. same key, same feel, same basic chord progression. i would say i just lost a lot of respect for phil woods, but david sanborn is there, so.....
@veeecter Well, actually, All Blues is a minor blues in 6/8. All he did was combine the harmony line of All Blues and combine it with the ballad, Willow Weep for Me. It's a completely different spin on both of those standards. FYI, it may be a similar progression, but the blues and jazz blues has been done a few million times over and I doubt that will change lol.
This was broadcast on american TV ?!!!! Holy smokes! Wow. How times (and hairstyles) have changed!! Great groove, great blowing. Thanks for posting this.
Yeah, now we have 500 channels and can't find any show that would dare to have a great jazz musician (that most people would not even know) on. No imagination, or risk taking in the TV business now.
phil's absolute love of selmer's apparently was blown to pieces by more money lol. cat used balanced tones since he was in short pants, obviously eventually switching to those mid 50's VI's that he did beautiful work on for like 3 and a half decades. i'm sure the last time he puts his horn on his stand (i hope it's not for another 100 years but i'm pretty sure he's been off and on oxygen for a couple years now) it'll have a meyer brothers mouthpiece on it.
i had the great pleasure of meeting phil woods when i saw him a few years ago in new england ..into his late seventees he is still amazing ..G-d bless phil hope he's around another 78
As a matter of fact yes, I have heard of all blues. I wasn't saying there was no similarities. I was just contradicting the opinion that this is the 'Same tune' as all. It most certainly isn't. I agree that it's similar, but there's just something about Miles Davis that makes it...well, Miles Davis really.
This was such a great show!!! They really need to bring something like this back. A show without flashy, commercial crap... Just real musicians doing what they do best!
I love when Phil plays he lets the other player set the pace for good his solo will be. What I am trying to say is he will play just good enough until he is pushed and then he will rip the keys off the horn.
Who cares what reeds they use? All that shit evolves during a career of playing. As your chops get stronger, you will change up reeds. Everyone that play professionally has their own evolution of artistic thought. Worry about yourself, and take in as much as you can from records, and teachers.
I hear ya man ! I've played on both Lavoz and Rico reeds and I like the Rico's. I think once you've reached the level that these guy at at it dosent matter !!! Remember - Bird played on a lot of crappy horns (pawn shop specials) and still played great !! ya dig !!!

Yes, you are correct. He now endorses Yamaha instruments and plays an 82Z with no lacquer. I heard him live at Sweet Basil in NY in June 1990 and he was playing a vintage MarkVI then.
try getting a richie cole signature meyer (this is an exact copy internally of his vintage NY meyer) then have it refaced by someone and it is likely to play very well - perhaps not quite a genuine NY meyer but fairly close and a few hundred dollars cheaper.
I never liked to Richie Cole Meyer. Too hard to control for me. During the late 90s, Meyer made the NY Limited edition. They were in the $200s-300s. I have one and those are A LOT better than the regular meyers.
Love that quote of "I feel pretty" from West Side Story at 5:28 after 2 quotes that I can't quite place. Plus Phill plays like a MoFo on this, and those Bb honks and the altissimo on the outchorus are just great. And Max Roach!!!!!!!!
I think the quote right before that is from "It Might As Well Be Spring" by Rodgers and Hammerstein: "I'm as restless as a willow in a windstorm . . ." Nice "willow" theme!
is it just me, or does sanborn's sound seem darker than usual? i dont really listen to him that much at all, but im just wondering if he cooled his sound down to fit the jazz style, rather than smooth jazz like he normally plays.
when he plays straight ahead or standards he just controls his edge. His Cross over and funk stuff is really bright. Dukoffs are good mouthpieces if you can control them. If not they will kill everyone in the room. I have one and I'm happy with it.
if you're a Meyer fan (over the Dukoff's) - try the SR Tech range - they're awesome! (especially with Alexander DC Superial reeds). I play an SR Tech Pro 115 and it screams.......and cries like a baby when you want it to.

i could say jack ass is funny, some selly things are funny too, but this was so freakin bad,and breaks heart, don't you see how the girls about to pee.
Phils current setup,heath93 is a old style sandblasted yamaha 82-z, a meyer 5m new york model mouthpiece, a normal meyer lig, and La Voz 3 Medium reeds.......
Well, here in this show Phil is playing on a Selmer series 80 and a Meyer N.Y 7. But Phil now is playing on a Yamaha Custom EX and the same mouthpiece.
lol...sorry to say...but its a Yamaha 82-Z....not the EX....with his standard ligature...and its a Meyer New York 5.....back then Meyers tip opening for 5 is the equivelent of the modern day Meyers 7
Unfortunately in todays pop culture. Music isn't really a "culture" like jazz, blues, soul, funk, even latin. That's CULTURE not just music and image. Look at american idol... its image. it has no real roots or soul. I my opinion.
I've always said Sanborn was a brotha and now with this new found video proof (the afro) I can no longer be disputed. These earlier years of Sanborn played a huge role in my style. Sanborn for president!!!
LOL . . .I totally agree! I heard Sanborn's music long before I knew what he looked like and just knew he was a brotha. Playing like he does, how could he not be? Imagine my surprise to find out otherwise. It's that St. Louis blues from the 50s/60s that he grew up with that shaped his phenomenally soulful sound.
you know where "all blues" came from?--"Willow Weep for Me!" many jazz standards and be-bop "borrowed" the chord progressions from dixieland and showtunes from the early 1900's to the 1940's
What a shame that Sanborn's TV show didn't last longer.Where, before or after could you see anything like this on live TV.Great to see Sanborn stretching like this and Phil-what can you say?Great stuff.
It's a natural point of departure for Phil's solo since that's were Sanborn ended. Phil has an affinity for Sanborn among modern players as in 1. he's playing with him, and 2. he once was quoted as saying about Sanborn..." I hope he leaves some soul for the rest of us!"
Phil Woods was guest artist at UNT One O'clock concert and After the sax professor got done playing his solo phil would carry on the previous solo almost, its really old skool i loved it
well this was corny and slick

Anybody knows which is Phil's setup?
luisitosax 3 years ago
Well, here in this show Phil is playing on a Selmer series 80 and a Meyer N.Y 7. But Phil now is playing on a Yamaha Custom EX and the same mouthpiece.
cincontrol 3 years ago
A Meyer 7? it is an open mpc, about 0.081" I think . I want to try a 6 maybe. Thanks for the info
luisitosax 3 years ago
No problem.
cincontrol 3 years ago
isnt it a VI?? looks very much like a VI front F key to me, didnt the 80s have a spatula sort of thing and the VIs a pearl
me007963 3 years ago
lol...sorry to say...but its a Yamaha 82-Z....not the EX....with his standard ligature...and its a Meyer New York 5.....back then Meyers tip opening for 5 is the equivelent of the modern day Meyers 7
OjAiSaXpLaYeR 3 years ago
Phil plays a NY Meyer 5 with V16 #3s and a Yamaha Z, NOT a Custom EX.

Two badass saxers, doin' what they do best. Nice altissimo transition...and Phil got a bit bluesy at the end there. awesome stuff.

lol listen to phill woods make fun of sanborns squeeling funny shit PHILL WOODS WINS
Jazzman555 3 years ago
Does anybody wins in music??? I didn´t know music is a kind of SPORT!
javitali 3 years ago
Unfortunately in todays pop culture. Music isn't really a "culture" like jazz, blues, soul, funk, even latin. That's CULTURE not just music and image. Look at american idol... its image. it has no real roots or soul. I my opinion.

Why the neck of Sanborn's sax look so straight?
luisitosax 4 years ago
...because it's an alto neck.
bigcat03 3 years ago
I know it is an alto neck. I mean in comparison to Phil's alto neck.
luisitosax 3 years ago
its because he has his sax so high on his strap so it makes that illusion.
me007963 3 years ago
Why can't I find the song "Willow" by Paul McCandless it's in 7 a great song in the All New Real Jazz Book 2 if anyone has any idea please help me

I've always said Sanborn was a brotha and now with this new found video proof (the afro) I can no longer be disputed. These earlier years of Sanborn played a huge role in my style. Sanborn for president!!!
christiansaxplyr 4 years ago
LOL . . .I totally agree!

They play together like a younger and older photo of the same man superimposed -- phenomenal!
Thanks for uploading this.

you know where "all blues" came from?--"Willow Weep for Me!" many jazz standards and be-bop "borrowed" the chord progressions from dixieland and showtunes from the early 1900's to the 1940's

What a shame that Sanborn's TV show didn't last longer.Where, before or after could you see anything like this on live TV.Great to see Sanborn stretching like this and Phil-what can you say?Great stuff.
alto75 4 years ago
It's a natural point of departure for Phil's solo since that's were Sanborn ended. Phil has an affinity for Sanborn among modern players as in 1. he's playing with him, and 2. he once was quoted as saying about Sanborn..." I hope he leaves some soul for the rest of us!"
mktunes 4 years ago
Phil Woods was guest artist at UNT One O'clock concert and After the sax professor got done playing his solo phil would carry on the previous solo almost, its really old skool i loved it
BluesMike23 4 years ago
Was it just me or was Phil Woods making fun of Sanborn when he did his intro for his solo?
thedemonsax 4 years ago
Yeah. I think he was making fun of him. I like to play like that; screaming. I listened to too many guitar solos in the 70's.
