  • i just noticed there's people arguing about the singer's voice... so i heard the version with aznar, but i'm too used to this version that i like this more, i like this voice. so i'd say it's all about.. convention (if that's the correct word).

  • I also would like to hear Lyle and Pedro here. But that doesn't mean that this is not a nice rempdition of this MAGIC and unique piece, wich Lyle Mays co-wrote, btw (quite a lot, probably)

. Good work anyways of all the orchestra, singer and pianist particularly. It was no easy one.

  • One question. How on earth does our Pat hear his own guitar with all that going on lol.

  • @georgeman2468

    In ear's? :P

  • I was very lucky to see Mr Metheny and Co. at the Apollo in Manchester, England, way back in about 1991 I think. He came into the foyer and signed autographs, of which I got one on the front of my ticket. I have it framed on the wall. His music shaped the way my life developed from the age of 19, and nobody else comes close. Thank you Pat and Lyle.

  • I don't even care that this was in 240p #orgasm

  • played bass on this song for high school jazz band and it was by far the most incredible piece of music i have ever read down. extremely tough to play but its an orgasm to the ears

  • falta pedro aznar

  • sorry she is cute though.....

  • i think she's nervous, i don't think she would be inexperienced.

also maybe if there were two singers

  • I can't understand the lyrics.

  • @cheeseschrister Oh dear.

  • I loved playing this song in high school it was the most memorable song I have ever played

  • if i could only gt paid to listen to this stuff all day...

  • @shooterpopko If Jim could fix it for me I would say, "dear Jim, please could you fix it for me to play like Lyle Mays". Id give anything for that, he makes it look so damn easy lol

  • @georgeman2468 Even though its not Lyle on this clip....!

  • ki az a 20 barom akinek ez nem tetszik???!!! egyszerűen gyönyörű!!!

  • i always felt that lot's of pgm's musical is perfectly made for a 19 piece studio jazz band (like stan kenton, gerald wilson). so, it was fun listening to this version of first circle ... as far as the woman's voice is concerned, it's a live performance and the sound mix is probably more of an issue. but, it's live!

  • THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS WHAT YOU FEEL NOT IF PEDRO AZANAR WAS BETTER: SHE IS INDEED GOOD ENOUGH

  • @urlifepc Sorry, but how she sings does affect how I FEEL. I do prefer Pedro Aznar as the way he sings makes me FEEL better. She is good enough, as you say, but that doesn't change the fact that her voice does affect how people FEEL especially after having heard Pedro sing this.

  • The original singer in this song was like 10 times better

  • Beautiful song but i prefer Pedro Aznar's voice over that lady's.

  • So much energy, perfect timing, professional and serious.

  • Bless his heart. And the vocalist he had also. Where did everyone go? He is a precious person, musician, composer, et al. who deserves a full orchestra behind his music. Sure we all miss the original vocalists but we're good. Blessings to Pat Metheny para cierto! Saludos mui carinosa para Usted

  • Sorry for the voice, rest is perfect ! Well done !

  • Ruben blades does a very interesting version of this, admittedly it's not the Aznar reading very good reading none the less

  • That's a song I love on the original album but really dislike on this video. Sorry guys, orchestration is poor, sound engineering is horrible, voice is not matching the tune and the rythm is gone. I want to forget about it. Good that I haven't been in Holland on that time to see it live. Still I love your work Pat. Hat off...

  • Agree she has a diffterent tone etc..check out PM with Anna Maria Jopek from Poland again very different. Thanks for the posting.

  • Not certain if I like this or not

  • hasta el 100

  • i like the big band version better where the trumpet has the singing part

  • Silly 22/8 :P

  • gotta love the director...

  • Should've had Pedro Aznar

  • Pedro Aznar is much better

  • trop bon!

  • The Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps did this song along with Third wind and A letter from Home in1998. It was incredible.

  • @TheEuphonator Indeed it was. My friend Bob marched in the snare line that year.

  • Yes.

  • Is there a DVD of this concert?

  • Steve Rodby and Paul Wertico's new band - Marbin

  • Sei 1 mito

  • Oops, my bad. Pedro Aznar is actually from Argentina. Lo siento!

  • @boblpage at least him jejeje

  • Then, Mr. Jazz, you should listen to the original version with this young Brazilian male vocalist Pat used back then. Astounding stuff!!!

  • @boblpage I know well the original version played with Pedro Aznar, I love Pat Metheny's music! That singer is superb, just like the others Pat have! I just don't really like how the voice of this female singer is, in this song!

  • @MrJazz86 I'd never heard of her before. She's very good and very lovely but I understand what you're saying. It could be that we're just both used to hearing this with Aznar on vocals.

  • Funny you should put down this girls "scat" vocals, I was just thinking what a fine job she did hitting all those difficult cord combinations and doing it clearly and with feeling. One can only guess how long she had to study and practice for this concert. I have nothing but prase for her.

  • But you have to hand it to her for sight singing that shit

  • pissed and stoned i can sing better than this.....feel sorry for Pedro Aznar

  • @brickonthewall amen

  • I have a boner after watching that chick

  • Music = freedom.

  • My marching band is doing a rendition of this song that a Drum and Bugle Corps did in 1998. We're also doing Last Train Home, Minuano, and Letter From Home

  • My marching band is doing a rendition of this song that a Drum and Bugle Corps did in 1998.

  • Hans Voormans does a fine job but Lyle Mays is irreplaceable, I really miss Lyle's breathtaking passion.

  • que voz mas fea

  • PERFEITO

  • Were is Pedro ???? this chick has an average voice,,,Pedro's voice is strong and original.Pat please bring back Pedro Aznar and Danny Gottlieb !!!!!!!

  • Just imagine being in the middle of all that... Metheny has the best job in the world.

  • Everything this man compose is purely heaven...love to see him again, in

concert. Thanks...Desweef, your wonderful for loading this.

First LP vinyl(Fiirst Circle), and all songs are just super fantastic!

  • It's actually 12/8 to 10/8

  • @thatguystephen314 otherwise known at 11/4

    3 2 3 2 2 | 3 3 2 2

    so a measure of 12/8

    and a measure of 10/8

  • this guys doesnt need a pillow...

  • jajaajajaajajajajaaaajajajajaaaa

  • Charles Edmund Winchester, III conducting?

  • Metheny with orchestra...This god is the actual Mozart.

  • try clapping along, its impossible

  • @clevamonkey no... 123 12 123 12 12 123 123 12 12

  • @clevamonkey - time sig is 22/8 (think 12/8 and 10/8 together; repeat; or vice-verse)

  • @Hubie59 actually i believe its 6/8 + 5/8, at least it is at the beginning

  • Genial music with gigawatts of energy in every note !!!

  • Simply awesome....

  • Pat Metheny and the Group as always never falters with their music, studio or live, it never changes.Mabuhay PMG!

  • sorry but I don't like the voice

  • @MrJazz86 She is a bit toothy :) And her voice seems too thin ... probably needed a second singer.

  • @MrJazz86 she doesn't sing so legato, that's why, I don't like it either.

  • @MrJazz86 sono dacoordo

  • @MrJazz86 , Dear sir, why are you criticizing the singer - she´s good, she was chosen, so think about that... Maybe you want to try yourself , maybe you do bettter, maybe YOUR voice is superb, who knows...Try to see the big picture - they are fantastic, alive, doing what they love...Thanks to people who love MUSIC.

  • @saudadedosanos80 Hi, I just sayed that I don't like her voice in this song, that's all. She's surely a great singer, but better for other things. I think (and that's only my opinion as a musician) that "The First Circle" needs another type of voice, with less legato and different tempo and pauses. I remember you that this was played with an orchestra, and they have a totally different approach to music than jazz players. Its normal, no one can do everything, neither me or you.

  • @MrJazz86

sorry, but I like the voice!

  • My bro's jazz band did this last year. They nailed it; personally, I like a tenor sax and trumpet in place of the vocalist. But this song is great and brings back memories. Pat Metheny ftw. |D

  • The most complex jazz piece I have ever heard. The most wonderful thing about PMG is how each musician's performance fits seamlessly with everyone else. Especially, especially in First Circle. For me, First Circle is the ultimate jazz piece. It is a pleasure to listen to it every time. I have to agree with most of you, though, that nobody does it like Pedro Aznar on synch vocals.. Effortless vocals!

  • What a music, people..:)

  • One of my FAVORITES, thanks again and again for posting!

  • bravo

  • I love this song with Fay's voice. Give her credit... she did a hell of a job. And kudos to the orchestra... this is not the easiest song to follow.

  • Really amazing!

  • falta Pedro sin duda

  • Vroomans sucks!!!

    nothing compares to Lyle Mays!!!

  • PAT METHENY IS A CLASS FOR ITSELF !!!!!

    THE FEMALE SINGER WAS SUPER!!!

AND THE FANTASTIC METROPOOL ORCHESTRA ,TOO !!!!

    THX FOR POSTING !!!

    Bella.Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵Ʒ

  • One thing that amazes me (not only his music) but the way he holds his pick. It's quite hard to play like that.

  • Está bien, pero los tonos necesarios sólo los consigue Pedro Aznar.

  • I'm agree missing the exeptional voice of Pedro!!

  • Wow, so much for ever thinking that I'd outgrown Metheny's work and his music, NOT! never will that happen. I still can't believe how moved I am every time I hear his compositions. He's a brilliant composer, and what moved me then still moves me as powerfully as it does now.

  • Rofl there's aretard in the audience who's clapping along with the group out of sync at the beginning

  • Solo piano is very, very good!

  • If anyone was wondering the name of the gal on vocals, it's Fay Lovsky.

  • I would be happy to supply PM striped shirts for the rest of his life!!!

  • I was there!!

  • Brilliant!!! One of my fav PMG pieces. History will look back at Pat as one of the greatest composers and musicians in the history of human beings. Mozart, Bethoven, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny...

  • bach is allways at the top of the gang too. possibly the most influential musician of all time. pat's influences ifluences influences...goes back to bach most likely

  • @rkelly62 Remeber Lyle Mays composed this music with Pat Metheny. I saw the first Pat Metheny Group show at Axis in Soho in NYC. Full Circle is one of my favorite compostions. I was fortunate to see the Pat Metheny Group do Full Circle in Portland., oregon

  • no improv here.simply well written perform

here aswell. i only wanted to say that this is the most beautiful girl ive ever seen sing this.

you have a very genuin style about ya.

    me.

  • Omg! 4:44 Cymbal scrape thing!

  • @gwillbizzle the drummer is doing that in purpose ;)

  • I know, its great!

  • @gwillbizzle isn't it pretty bad you and me can have an orgasm on hidden little jazz sounds?

  • hey, you're not the only one listening for that stuff.

  • This song reminds me of pocahauntus... then again im freaking out right now =DDD

  • i'm in love with fay lovsky :)

  • me too!!!!

  • She also says Ha, Ho, Oo, and Hmm. I'm thrilled that Lovsky and Metheny are on the same recording. Nothing against the Voormans guy but I wish LM had been on piano. Somehow between about 5:30 and 7:30 the thing loses some of its energy. But a great! recording nonetheless.

  • That's the great thing about improvisation. The improviser is totally allowed to take liberty with the energy level/style/whatever he wants to pretty much. I think it's fine. He started out simple and built the energy pretty well. Subtlety, my friend.

  • After listening to this more, I have decided that his playing sounds like Rainer Brüninghaus on Eberhard Weber's Colors of Chloe, though I haven't heard that in more that 20 years so I could be wrong. Can't get enough of this video.

  • it would be nice if that girl said something other than yaa yaa

  • AWESOME bass and impeccable delivery!

  • Love this arrangement, superb!

  • It's alternating 12/8 and 10/8 bars til it opens up into the break, which is straight 8/8 rockout goodness.

    Terrific song, timeless.

  • 22/7 is Pi

  • i much prefer aznar's "oh's" to this young lady's "ah's" but who am i to criticize...she must be doing something right if she get's to perform with him.....but is it me, or should mays and metheny be paired up for life?....i have "solo" albums from both and other than beyond the missouri sky (charlie haden collab), i haven't enjoyed it as much as when they get together

  • the timesignatuer is 22/8 offset with some bars of 4/4 i.e the part where the accents are placed on the 8th notes on the offbeat.

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • what are the time sigs on this song?

  • I think 6/4 and 5/4, or maybe two bars of 3/4 and a 5/4 one...

  • Comment removed

  • this is 12/8, 10/8

  • Hi, it's actually written in 22/8.

  • @Naniuq I thought it switched between 12/8 10/8 and 8/8?

  • You might be right, I just remember reading in an interview that it was 22/8 .. may very well switch between 12/8 and 10/8 .. and thats where they got the 22/8 from :D

  • Pat. Pedro & lyle de best !!!

  • My favourite for over 20 years.

    Thank you, Pat.

  • More magic from a living jazz legend.

  • Lovsky's not bad...

But I gotta' side with Anna-Marie Jopek. Man-O-Man, she commands your ears. eyes & (for men),...salivary glands!

  • we're doing a winterguard routine to this song. cept its a remix so it sounds a little differant.

  • the clapping is heavy

  • Bones 2010!!!

  • @TricoreSonata09 Can't wait!

  • Same! are you marching this season?

  • planning on it! lol don't have a spot yet. I should make it though. :) you? if so, on what? (I'm a bass guy)

  • haha yea I got a spot(IN) last camp in the Baritone line. I cant wait till we start working on the show!

  • Pat, thank you for the music from your heart! I love it for over 20 years. Greatings from Holland

  • Absolutely EPIC!

  • this is amazing.

  • Nothing compares to Pedro Aznar.

  • @ircgrd where is pedro anzar?

  • @ircgrd

I been collected all Pat album,,...Superb Jazz guitarist !!!!

  • she does a good job with Pedro's part !!

  • El receptor de papel dijo al hermano

  • Si, es cierto , este tema sin la voz de Pedro, no es lo mismo. Igualmente, maravilloso Pat!!!

  • musica del alma

  • first circle without aznar is not first circle ¡¡

  • <3 this to bits

  • My Marching band EHTHS SILVER EAGLES played this, letter from home, heat of the day, and another life, for our marching band show a few years back, it was a great show, and really fun to play

  • my marching band is playing this song in our show this year!

  • even with a full orchestra, he can't compare with the way he sounded with lyle mays and the rest of the guys

  • No kidding.... the orchestra is amazing, but his band was ascendant....

  • I soar high with this one even if aznar didnt do the vocals. Of course with aznar first circle is much better.

  • Metheny rules!

  • aznar =(

  • the vocals originally recording by Pedro Aznar, he has such a beautiful voice,

Pat was and is surrounded by many amazing musicians, first Lyle of course, togheter are simply uniques.

But Rodby,Wertico,Nana,Pedro Aznar, the early Jaco, and the list goes on and everybody who watches this video already knows who are those guys.

    sorry my english.

    much love.

God bless Pat.he change my approach to music forever.

  • "Pure Joy" truly captures it. This is what JOY sounds like to me.

  • Excelente, maravillosa, amazing, excelent, etc etc

  • what an amazing take on already PMG classic!

  • amazing. astounding.

  • great ! How hard these guys must have worked to sound so tight !!

  • Pat Menteny is the greatest creator of music I have ever heard!!!!

  • I agree re Metheny's greatness as a composer. But I think Lyle Mays is too often ignored in his own right as a key composer and collaborator with Metheny. This song was composed by both Pat and Lyle as were several others on The First Circle and other CDs. I think it's one of the greatest musical collaborations in history but both mean are also genius staure independently of each other..

  • Pure Joy

  • Disons (8/8 // 14/8) // 12/8' etc ...

  • This is just the best ever "Fitst Circle"..... I have listned to this tune a thusand times,- but this is just great. All my respect to the condutor, the band and Pat, for giving us such a great render of this milestone tune. Wow......
