to the people who hate the tv film: I'd take it over the new show any day, cause I at least feel like it's a continuation of the classic series, which nuwho doesn't.
I haven't seen this movie, but... you know what I think? The Doctor will be a hard act to follow, but inevitably, he won't be around for much longer with only two regenerations left.
I THINK, when all is said and done, when all regens have been exhausted, when the Doctor is gone for good, say maybe in/within ten years; they could finally make an EPIC movie featuring the TIME WAR!
Yes. Time War. Daleks. Heroic sacrifice and the like... Just plain epicness. I'm only saying... it'd be cool.
I remember watching this when it aired. I enjoyed it, but it felt wrong. I think it was the pacing. It seemed more paced for an American audience, and forgetting that we Americans were very used to the pacing of the British made series.
Maybe I should have rephrased my comment better: I meant that I didn't know what Doctor Who was back then. I've been an avid fan since the 2005 revival. I did go on to watch some of the older series.
@overseer06 yeah same. As a kid, I remembered getting up every Saturday for this weird show on UKTV Gold because it was so weirdly good!!! It took me a while before it dawned on me... hehe... I remember Attack of the Cybermen very vividly!! :D
Wish they would make a new Doctor Who movie. American produced but British made. With Matt Smith as the Doctor. Not Jonny Depp! Basicly made by the team who makes Who now but without the budget worries. Dont know why they havnt done it yet cause its not like they wont get there money back as Who fanbase alone would cover it. Spose its down to the BBC with the rights etc. Ah well.
I just realized that I saw this movie! I didn't know a thing about Doctor Who, so I remembered seeing a science fiction movie. When I recently saw a clip of the Master possessing the paramedic, I realized that I saw it before! I watched that movie! I can't remember anything else though.
@overseer06 it can be watched on stagevu if its still up their, kinda like youtube but for full movies, works in the uk to, recomend the download avi option rather than the play button, as playing it installs the divx active x thing and takes ages to buffer
@overseer06 You'd love the series this is based on. I recommend "Resurrection of the Daleks" from the classic series. This movie is pretty awesome too.
I'm an American, and a Doctor Who fan (of the new and classic series) I did love Paul McGann's performance as the Doctors, and Sylvester McCoy's Performance, but this movie was fucking horrible.
@DWRomana I found it on a Google search for BBC dvd and you can find pretty much every damn doctor who episode ever made to buy even before the reboot. Happy hunting.
Fox was concidering creating a new "Doctor Who" series with Paul McGann as the Doctor with this film as the pilot. When the movie did poorly in the ratings the idea for a new show was dropped. It's a shame that Paul McGann only got to do this one adventure, he would have made a fantastic Doctor.
just google stagevu then hit the site and search for
Doctor Who (1996) DVDRip
and its top of the list, if the download fails, wait an hour then try again, the servers randomly go on and off line, but dont install anything, only use the download button, not the play button (right click, save target as) will be about 480-580mb
smaller than the usual 700mb avi's because their coded with the latest divx, but VLC media player will play it :)
@DarthJuhoker96 Keep in mind that in 1996, Doctor Who was only known in the United States for being on PBS. It wouldn't be until 2005-2006, when it's popularity would go more mainstream. Although the new series started out with Chris Eccelston, David Tennant's doctor was what brought American viewers to the show.
mcgann is a brilliant actor, but this american shitmake is aweful and i'm glad it flunked. eccleston's era was great. tennant's average at best, matt smith's looking good so far!
I'm clearly bias, but I've always liked the 1996 film. Of course, it can be argued there wasn't exactly much Doctor Who around until 2005... just the odd charity skit like Dimension in Time, or documentary usually celebrating an anniversary like 30 Years in the TARDIS. Wilderness Years indeed... with McGann's a slight return, which should've been so much more.
For those interested in Doctor Who aparently this is part of the official canon of the show. It was the very rare episode where the Doctor whose ability to pilot the Tardis is often less then perfect, accidentally lands the Tardis in a Bad American sci-fi movie. Plot Spoiler: The MAster is killed twice. First by the Daleks and then again by Eric Roberts.
In a nutshell Paul McGann was an excellent Doctor trapped in a horrible movie length episode set in San Fran or LA.
@IWazEre1 They almost ruined it. Fortuneately most have never seen this piece of shite. Its like they actually got the Doctor right but stuck him in a horrible horrible story where the Master was more like a Disney Villian.
"Fox is the right place for it". No it isn't. Doctor Who is British and it belongs on the BBC. It's great it has fans in the USA and all around the world, but don't Americanise it! That was where this movie went wrong!
Could've been worse. Thankfully, Tom Hanks (I feel sick) , Harrison Ford (oof here it comes) and Jim Carey (ROWLFFFF) were all asked to be the Doctor and declined it for various reasons. Christopher Loyd was asked to do the Master but he wanted too much money.
TOM HANKS as the Doctor ? HARRISON FORD ? Ford is a great actor, but as The Doctor ?? Noooooo. Jim Carey ? bwahahahahaaaa........ I'm laughing like a maniac after your comments.
I can just see a big - screen version directed by Tim Burton, w / Johnny Depp as the Doctor.
& Tim Curry as the Master, or the who played the System Lord Ba'al in Stargate SG - 1. James Marsters ( Buffy, Smallville, Caprica ) as the Doctor, perhaps.
@knoxvilleguy2 Yeah, unfortunately Marsters was already on Torchwood. Besides, Ithink he would have been an excellent Master, I keep thinking how it would look with a female Doctor. Gabrielle Anwar sticks in my head and then again, I'm a die-hard Burn Notice fan.
@OnaCR96 - Cliff Simon, isn't that the actor who played Ba'al in SG1 ? He'd make a great Master He did him as the typical over - the - top bombastic System Lord, then the character was toned down. I can see the Master going in that direction.
@CaptainAndyman Unfortunately, a lot of the budget came from Fox, which meant some Americanisation was inevitable. For me Paul McGann really made up for a lot of the movie's (many) problems, and remains my favorite Doctor. I really wish he'd managed to make it to a series, because I think he would have been brilliant--I love his audios, but seeing him in the show proper would have been even better.
He often loses his memory after regeneration. More so in the tv movie due to the anesthetic dr. Halloway gave him which almost killed him and severely corrupted his regenerative cycle.
@Telepresent Apparently, if the show hadn't been cancelled in the 80's, Sylvester's Doctor would have regenerated due to being driven completely insane.
Which to me sounds absolutely awesome; better than gang shot-out ¬_¬
Yeah sorry Colin, our writers are running out of inspiration and you're the scapegoat for the problems the series has at the moment. Because of that were going to give you a rubbish death fitting of our writing talents.
Actually, I think it was justified not showing the McGann/Eccleston regeneration. Think about it - in the first episode of a series not seen in 15 years, introducing it to a new generation, having an actor who played the doctor once in a badly received film most people didn't know about (or forgot) come in, be introduced, DIE, and be replaced, explain it's still the same character then go off have an adventure...
They've alerady showed him once on the new series, but as a two-second clip, along with all of the other incarnations (the next doctor) but they need to bring the MAN into action again. He's too underrated.
Maybe do another of those gimmick "X doctors" episodes. "Four doctors" comes to mind, as they've done 2, 3 and 5 already.
American versions of British TV shows have about as much success as a balloon full of hydrogen ( whatever ) during a lightning storm while fireworks are being sent up.
There are exceptions - " All in the Family ", " Sanford & Son* " (* " Steptoe & Son " ) & the U.S. version of " The Office " ain't that shabby, either.
But the American adaptation of " Red Dwarf " was supposedly terrible, & the semi - Americanized Dr. Who could've been MUCH better.
@SpotxSpot...I couldn't agree more. what I can't get my head around is that the daleks exterminated the master. What? The timelords phoned the daleks and asked them to kill him? I don't think so. Also, the dalek voices are terrible!
ok reading these comments i see a lot of ppl flaming paul mcgann. nut me and my dad both agree he could have been great if the americans werent so bastard picky about box office gross. Thats the only reason Dr who wasn't ressed 10 yrs earlier. Box office ratings. i for one am glad he got the audio shows
yeah he did a prity good job on this as the doctor, i realy liked that audio story thats on the BBC web site to, the shada kinda remake as a flash player
it was made urely for money and couldnt give a fuck about the show. biggest let down. you can always tell if a movies shit when it looks like it was made 10 years before it actually was. i thought it looked like a guy highlander movie.. doctor who and the master are british they can have any personality in the world (due to regeneration) its such an open thing. the guy can have any personality and he can travel anywhere in the universe at any time. with all the possibilities they fuck it up
it was the standard fox intro at the begining, that intro would advertise the fact its coming to "fox" when this edit was shown on other cable channels
the doctor has always been someone older and the doctor feels older. itll just be odd if this little 26 year old baby plays it he's really horrible i saw him in this one thing, i cant judge from that but he was awful
Paul McGann has some good audio books of the 8th doctor. Grace decided not to become a companion at the end but what I personally would love is if a new Doctor ran into an older, reformed and doing well Chang Lee for a 1 off adventure so he (C.L) could tell the Doctor how much he changed his life and an adventure with an Asian American back ground (without stereotypes) would be cool.
I loved the movie too. There was so much love put into and it had a really nice, magic 90s Doctor Who feeling. And the TARDIS was fanttastic, so much detial and it reaked with Doctor Who fandom love. And it was the best TARDIS.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Dr Who made by the yanks? well it's just not cricket is it? The Britts will always make funnier movies and sitcoms over the yanks anyday. I am glad we don't get to much American rubbish down here in NZ
Yeah, we can clear see who is more open minded right about now cant we? Especially when you take into account this was written and directed by brits, primarily filmed in canada and features the main part still being played in fine tradition by a brit. Yes, I can see your point... American money must've blasphemed this hmm?
Yep. American money provided by American TV producers. It doesn't matter who writes it, if Hollywood producers get their hands on it.
The Doctor as an action hero? Companion is a love interest? And if I remember correctly their were inner city thugs with AK-47s at some point. Gangstas? There are no gangstas in DOCTOR WHO!
McGann was great as Doctor Who, but the movie sucked in spite of him.
well i could say thats typical big headed americans (but i wont) personaly i belive the dr belongs at the bbc (i just uploaded this because its a prity rare clip) "i DONT agrea with the narator" and i very much doubt he will reply to your comment LOL
Oh, I don't know. For us in the US, being able to see it at all is a good thing. I'd love to see Doctor Who on the BBC, but I can't cause I don't have an antena to hack into the Canadian BBC like I used to when I was younger.
Blaming americans at large wont solve anything. Americans as a people had nothing to do with it. FOX which is an american station co-produced this. If anything, the mere fact not enough americans tuned in is often cited as why no series was made should silence the american bashers for good.
to the people who hate the tv film: I'd take it over the new show any day, cause I at least feel like it's a continuation of the classic series, which nuwho doesn't.

it was made urely for money and couldnt give a fuck about the show. biggest let down. you can always tell if a movies shit when it looks like it was made 10 years before it actually was. i thought it looked like a guy highlander movie.. doctor who and the master are british they can have any personality in the world (due to regeneration) its such an open thing. the guy can have any personality and he can travel anywhere in the universe at any time. with all the possibilities they fuck it up
etocadet 2 years ago
why did they have footage from TOTTL at the beginning?
tomontherun99 2 years ago
it was the standard fox intro at the begining, that intro would advertise the fact its coming to "fox" when this edit was shown on other cable channels

Cool!I wonder if Eric Roberts ever seen the show before.

the movie does not get enough credit. i think many dont like it JUST because its an american production.
i personly LOVED the movie.
its a shame that no sereis was made after the movie.
but oh well.
at least there are the audio stories with Paul Mcgann
all of which made by Big Finish.
(just search for 'Big Finish' if u have not seen these yet)

we really cant have this new emo kid as the new doctor can we
lerxt42 2 years ago
I agree
he's so weird and way to young
the doctor has always been someone older and the doctor feels older. itll just be odd if this little 26 year old baby plays it he's really horrible i saw him in this one thing, i cant judge from that but he was awful

Dr Who made by the yanks? well it's just not cricket is it? The Britts will always make funnier movies and sitcoms over the yanks anyday. I am glad we don't get to much American rubbish down here in NZ
youngcharlie36 4 years ago
Yeah, we can clear see who is more open minded right about now cant we? Especially when you take into account this was written and directed by brits, primarily filmed in canada and features the main part still being played in fine tradition by a brit. Yes, I can see your point... American money must've blasphemed this hmm?
commandox20 3 years ago 6
McGann was great as Doctor Who, but the movie sucked in spite of him.

what about Torchwood?

I agree, leave Dr Who to us Brits. Not that i don't love American shows, but Americanisation of Dr Who just spoils it to be frank.

I agree and I'M AMERICAN lol
luvjwtyt11 2 years ago
I love Dr Who BECAUSE it's British. So, yeah. Let the Brits make it and we Americans will just sit back and enjoy!

TheWraith 4 years ago
Yeah...
DarthBombshell 4 years ago
Oh, I don't know. For us in the US, being able to see it at all is a good thing. I'd love to see Doctor Who on the BBC, but I can't cause I don't have an antena to hack into the Canadian BBC like I used to when I was younger.

Admitting to illegal activity, how nice.
commandox20 3 years ago
Yeah, because they are going to be jailed for it, right? If the states can't provide the good stuff in a timely fashion, then torrent it.
thoomolong 3 years ago
Blaming americans at large wont solve anything. Americans as a people had nothing to do with it. FOX which is an american station co-produced this. If anything, the mere fact not enough americans tuned in is often cited as why no series was made should silence the american bashers for good.

Two holes in that bit of logic.
1). I already knew that.
2). I'm not American.
