Only a bit more than 20k views, and some comments from disgusting, ignorant gobshites. What is WRONG with you people? My fellow white Australians, that is.
This apology is nothing but '' LIP SERVICE '', It's purely symbolic and does nothing to help the plight of Aboriginal Australians. Malcolm X stated '' education is our passport to the future '', this applies to Aboriginal Australians. Unless positive action is taken to educate Aboriginal youth nothing will change. How this can be done is something i can't answer. We can't change the sins of the past, we can only learn from it and move on. Unfortunately racism is eternal, that will never change.
Lots of good examples of why Kevin Rudd had to say "sorry" in the comments below. Unfortunately not a lot has changed since the apology. The country is till full of racists, the Racial Discrimination Act is still suspended, the NT intervention goes on, deaths go on, over-representation in prisons goes on, third world conditions go on, high infant mortality goes on.. 3 years has shown that the apology was just an empty political gesture. What a shame.
@Rafdaganga too bad he didnt apologies on stupid Australians knowing nothing about there own country , i spose we should just bash some more lebs cause there on "our beaches"and shit aye? frigin idiot
US should apologize for the Native Americans/African Americans, Britain should apologize for their atrocities against the Boers/Africans/Indians/Irishmen, Russia should apologize to the Jews (they were pretty anti-semitic)/Polish/Belorussians/Taksins/Baltic peoples, Japan should apologize to the Chinese/Philippino/Koreans/Indonesians/Indochinese peoples...etc. All the savagery - why?
NativeSupport, it doesn't matter if Kevin Rudd didn't mean it, he was saying it on behalf of the people who elected him, knowing he would apologise. I wanted the apology, so I voted for him. So in this instance, I like to think Mr Rudd, though he himself might not have meant it, was talking for us.
@clairedinakara EXACTLY AND HE GOT VOTES FOR BEING A SUCK UP. THAT'S WHY HE SHOULD TAKE IT AND STICK IT UP HIS ASS. IT'LL FIND GREAT COMPANY THERE LIKE HIS HEAD AND A BUNCH OF MORONS THAT BELIEVE HIS SHIT. IN FACT IF THIS FORUM ROOM DIDN'T LOOK SO MUCH LIKE PARLIAMENT I'D SAY THAT'S WHERE THIS WAS HAPPENING.
I served with some Australian soldiers in Vietnam long ago and fell in love with their incredible spirit. Great warriors, but so fun loving. Since then I have had an admiration for all things Australian.
As an American, I'm sorry to say (and a bit embarrassed to admit) I just recently heard of this incredible step toward reconciliation. Bravo, Australia! I'd expect nothing less from such remarkable people.
I wonder if our new American president would be interested in our own Sorry Day?
This was a historic moment for Australia. It takes a great nation to admit its past wrong-doings and outline the steps for reconciliation. It takes courage to say "Sorry".
This apology/speech is the most beautiful & noble thing I have seen in so many years. This is why we Humans can still hope for peace & love on this Earth & truly make things better. This is why all good Australians who support this apology should be very proud of their nation & themselves.I never thought such a great leader & Humanist like Kevin Rudd existed in Australia.I am totally surprised & happily amazed by this speech! It's a pity that not many countries have such a great leader as Mr.Rudd
That's true. Italians should apologize to Germans that they invaded Germany 2000 years ago. And Greeks should apologize to Persians that Alexander the Great conquered Persia 2300 years ago. And Persia should apologize to all nations that they conquered 2500 years ago. And so on and so on. Hopefully, we will finish all the apologies when we get to the age of Sumer.
Nobody could blame them because they had no concept of human rights and world peace and sophistocation as the modern era. But the atrocities that had been committed in the 19th to 21st century by many nations should be apologized for, because how could modern men, who valued the great golden ideals and reason and ethics of the Modern Era be able to fall into such barbarity and savagery as the people of the past?!
@TheVoiceOfReason93 Mate this isnt sum third world Country Australia is a first world country. Mistreatment of Authorities cilivilians, churches and foremost government against Aboriginal and Torress Stait were horrendous if they were darker most were bashed to death raped by church members. And as for saying that Aboriginal werent going places look up these Aboriginals on google - David Unaipon 1872 - 1967, Harold Blair. B:1922 - 1979, Neville Bonner 1922 - 1999,
@XLongbeachX "Mate this isnt sum third world Country" you are an idiot or are you trolling ? i can really tell what kind of life you are living ... oblivious to everything thing around you
Im only just hearing this speech by Rudd now. Thanx DaSuthNa for posting this. I read John Pilgers book, New Rulers of the World(2002), there is a final chapter devoted to this genocide in Aussie history. Rudd saying sorry is a good start may it continue unfettered. I am proud to be an Australian now yet before I was never proud to be a white Australian. I was at the 1986 rally from Redfurn to Mrtn Place calling for a Royal Commission into Black Deaths in Custody. now Finally some real light.
I laugh me broken. The whole Commenweath has however, thus a lot of mud in being. Even the queen would have had to apologise how much death it gave in English wars in the history. It is for me still about the question, why the Britten and other Europeans took the right to occur in other countries, and to rob them
Well, let's hope that this speech was a standard that Kevin Rudd has set, and that the governments actions to follow this speech will speak louder and resonate into the hearts of humanity.
Everyone wants peace, but we sometimes forget that healing and restoration needs to take place first.
Australian Aboriginal tribes are not the descendants of slaves (although there were forms of enslavement), but the original inhabitants of this country. I don't know that there were many hangings; Lynch mobs seem to be far more common in American history. The stolen generations were kidnapped, torn from their families, but they weren't sold (that I'm aware of).
A Koori (for example) really has more in common with a Cherokee than with an African American.
Amen, though i have black friends, there is alot alot of bad abos out there that give me good abo friends bad names. I quite often hear my black friends say fuck the coons!
hey i had to research this at school. well the stolen generation is when (a long time ago) the australian government forced half black or blacks that looked to be white were given away to familys to grow up hating and disrespecting the aboriginals. they never apoligized for it till now.
so yer. hope that helps
oh yer the half or looked to be white were also forced to work either in farm or as slaves.

He's not saying sorry for you. He's saying sorry on behalf of the government and the parliament. People come and go, but the instrument of government and the constitutional entity called parliament have been around since 1901.
haha, he's saying sorry on behalf of the Austrlaian government, however, also Austrlian citizens in society who may have perpetrated injustice too...b/c you know that 30% of y'all are racist, thats how many Australians supported little howard's stance...
What an oxymoron! Those who don't believe that Indigenous Australians deserve an apology for the horrific acts enacted by the Australian Government ARE rascist. How much do you know about Australian History? I suggest you strive to become more educated!
I have never been so proud to be australian. I am so used to feeling ashamed of our government, but now for the first time since I can remember I feel hope for the future.
I dunno, it sounds kinda weak. I don't think he truly cares. Either that or he's rehearsed it to death and now, to him, it sounds bland
The whole thing was caused by a collaboration between the government and the church, who both thought it would be better to send aboriginal children to missionaries to be raised as white christians. Predominantly so that they would become loyal and simple citizens who are far easier to control and more likely to support the establishment.
As a non-indigenous woman who's been supporting the call for justice for ???yesterday was an amazing day. I just hope that those people who've been personally affected by this horror have been able to take some heart and hope for tomorrow.
I'd like to say how sorry I feel, that so much injustice and cruelty has been committed against people for the simple reason, that they were not 'black' enough!
Let's walk and work together for a new future!I believe that compensation should be paid!
When he said "The time has come" at 4:39 i almost expected Peter Garrett to chime in with "To say fairs fair" and then all of parliament would join hands in song with "How can we sleep while our beds are burning"
one thing that will stick in my mind forever is during my childhood hearing an aboriginal grandmother singing the mourning soing 'yowie yowie my brown-skinned baby they take him away'.
