Actually, the history of the GUI starts with Sketchpad on the TX-2 (One of the first transistor computers, wen't live 1957) and the late 50 - early 60s. What Sketchpad did was to show the power of being able manipulate information graphically. The UI itse (desktop etc.) was a huge board of flip-switches. The pointer used was a stylus moving a cursor on a oscilloscope. Search "ivan sutherland sketchpad"
