So, I don't play the trumpet, so I don't really have a point of reference by which to answer this question... but is this a difficult piece to learn? Like, relative to other pieces? How much experience would you need to play a piece like this?
@C3POmeetsData technically, it's not extremely difficult. the hard part is accepting the imperfections in the music, and also this song is better the softer you play it.
That's a tricky question to answer. As a trumpet player of 7 years, all of the notes are within my range and technical ability. However, the thing about Miles' music is that every note tells a story. I would say Miles' phrasing (dynamic control, smears and half-valves, alternately mellifluous and acerbic tone) and timing are pretty much inimitable.
late after a great night hanging with my younger (but the best) new band, thinking on how I flick from blues to jazz to soul to hip hop; sometimes I struggle to know which I am best at or which suits me the most - who knows, enjoy em all, but amongst playing a lot of funky rhythmic stuff this evening a proper melody urge grabbed me - and sitting up thinking, just thought ain;t listened to this in years - proper amazing :)
Hubby introduced me to Miles. I remember the first time I saw him on TV, (1985) he came out with his back to the audience, long greasy hair, sunglasses, very menacing and I got chills. I had no clue who he was until that moment. What a genius.

real music doesn't have lyrics!

@ZRMDMK miles has the unspoken lyrics
a broken trumpet tells a tragic tale,
one might say a tragedy.
a night in madrid, and a lifetime in mystery,
echoes the emptiness of crowded streets.
