I went through tons of tube changes, and finally put a matching quad of GT-E34LS in. THis gave me a little more head room. I also noticed that the Tungsol ECC803-S made a huge difference. I went through about 8 sets of power tubes and 10 sets of preamp tubes before I figured out what made this amp cut through my rhythm guitar players fuckin JMP!! A sonic Maximizer pedal helps too....
Yeah man those old JMP's are insane, all that clean headroom before it breaks up, there's NO WAY I could get that thing to sound good in the room you see here, shit would be flying off the walls and the cops would be at my door. But, their tone is legendary for a reason
I have the the DSL100, and the other guy in my band has a 1977 JMP100. His amp has so much more head room, when i play a solo, he drowns me out completely. I have to run a boss OD-1 through the green channel and play super loud to be heard when playing a lead. I should have shopped for a JCM800. Sometimes you can find then for cheap, and get a good amp guy to go through it and clean it up like new.
