According to the German Constitutional Court ( and common sense ) there is NO SUCH THING as a European "people"...only European peopleS ! This video is nothing more than PROPOGANDA paid for by us taxpayers !
As far as the EU wanting to listen to what citizens think...remember The Netherlands,Ireland and France voting NO on the constitution (which later returned as the Lisbon treaty) ?

Mind the fact that listening to all EU citizens might also result in a rejection of further integration, hence the failed referenda. The presented strategy is a noble one, worth giving it a try but stop thinking that everything will be alright when you educate people about the EU.
Especially in the current situation national interests are fiercely protected by governments, usually because the political climate (read: the people) demand so.

Hardly considerable more than within federal memberstates. Protectionism is very consequently and pretty effectively fought by the EU commission.
But if you think even that is not good enough, you probably would be shocked about the huge amount of protectionism that would go on in a European Free Trade agreement without any political powers. I am not even starting to talk about how it may be outside of free trade agreements.

The single market would fall apart without a political union that effectively fights hidden memberstates protectionism as well as manages the harmonization of regulations.

Not really within the single market.
In relation to the rest of the world, I'd say its just average. With lots of free trade agreements with other important economic areas, but also some protectionist attitudes. Like the USA for example as well.
