How come campaign songs (and insults) aren't this cool anymore? It seems that we've lost a lot from the English language. I remember reading a compilation of Poor Richard's Almanacs and Ben Franklin called someone sexually loose by saying they were "as common as the pavement." That's hilarious. You rarely hear such beautiful insults nowadays. I know a guy who keeps that tradition alive, although he has read a lot of Roman works, and the Romans were very good at subtle insults.
@angrynadya Native American tribes practiced the great oral tradition -- the movie Smoke Signals is about that. And the Bee Gees sing Words are all I have.
I was listening to this compilation of 80s movie theme songs in my car, and I was thinking a similar thought. Even as little as 30 years ago, people were writing songs, songs that would be in the public zeitgeist that were crafted specifically for a movie.
Now it's all synergy and tying products together. People just take an existing song and reuse it, spread out licensing dollars, etc. It's easier to spend than it is to create...
Had Tippecanoe not been elected President, he would probably have lived a while longer... Sometimes politics can be a literally lethal business. I would've voted for Van Buren, anyway. But the song is a catchy one indeed, no wonder Gen'l Harrison won. Just a pity he couldn't use this rendition. ;)
@TwistedCheesePuff I have to disagree. Henry Clay had no set ideology, but this was hardly a bad thing. Because he was able to compromise he was able to save the United States from dissolution and civil war in 1820, 1832, and 1850.

Why can't all campaign videos be this cool?
guntz12 8 months ago 5
The best thing about the election of William Harrison was that it brought us John Tyler. Tyler was one of the best presidents the US has ever seen.

@angrynadya What was in all those books that were burned over the centuries -- something that made somebody think they had to be burned.

Am I the only one who dislikes the fact that the two highest rated comments are just lines from the song?
gumball20000 1 year ago 18
@gumball20000 that comment kinda lost it's strength after one of the two most rated comments became your own doesn't it? :))
