You have an error here. You say that Sayers scored his 6 TD's at Soldier Field. As the video shows, this game was played at Wrigley Field where the Bears played until 1970
@belitnakoff yes, on Dec. 29th against the hated Giants. However, I read that the NFL wanted Halas to move the game to Soldier Field due to it's larger capacity, but Hals said no. It's very different today! What the NFL says .....goes
@tomservo56954 He only had 9 carries from scrimmage, for 113 yards. He had more yards, 135, on 5 punt returns! The Bears scored another rushing TD after Sayers' punt return TD, so that could have been 7 there and 5 on the ground, but he was on the bench by then.
@mweiford Halas could probably pay alot less to use Wrigley, but Soldier Field was a pretty shitty place for football back then. It was a multi-purpose stadium with bench seats all around. Sight lines were pretty bad & the place was just beat up after decades of year round use. But since Soldier Field is owned by the city, I think Halas could definitely cut a better lease with Wrigley. The Bears moved because the NFL wanted all the teams to play in 50,000 seat stadia.
Back then, home games were blacked out. We didn't see this until the news would play highlights. This is Wrigley, not Soldier, Field. Bears were in Wrigley til '71.
@VJDxp Great point about the NFL blacking out home games back then, regardless of sell-outs or not. Actually opened the door for the AFL games being shown at 4pm back East. Especially the Raiders.
R.I.P Brian Piccolo. Just read the book, "Brians Song" and to be honest.. I cried my eyes out. :(

While Jim Brown is the best of all time, the best open-field runner of all time was Gale Sayers, with O.J. Simpson 2nd.

Luckily for me, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and I watched this game on TV.
I didn't like seeing the Niners lose, but it was the greatest game I've ever seen one player play.
Ironically, Sayers first injured his knee in another game against the Niners three years later, running a sweep.
I was surprised to see that Illinois played Northwestern today at Wrigley Field! And Notre Dame is playing Army at Yankee Stadium.
Bring back the good old days of REAL football in the NFL!

Did you see how close the brick was to the back of the end zone on his final punt return? Why didn't the Bears use Soldier Field back then?
