@digiemotions I don't think you can use an iPad for an external monitor however, it would be great if you could! I wonder if other tablets have A/V inputs so you can plug a camera or other device into it?
@MrAngel897 If I'm not mistaken, the 1100D is the same as the T3i in the United States? This should definitely work on the 1100D/T3i. I'm not sure why it's not working for you? The method to make it work on your camera should be pretty much the same as on the Canon 7D. I'm sure you checked to see that your monitor was set to the right input?
@MrAngel897 It will work on a HDTV. That's what I'm demonstrating on in my YouTube video. I have a mini HDMI cable from the camera that connects to the regular size HDMI connector on the TV. Set your TV input to one of the HDMI inputs. The camera should output from HDMI when you're in video mode. One more check, hit your menu button on the camera and see if you see the menu on the TV.
Did you test to see if audio was coming into the monitor? Also, curious to know if you were able to disable the white box in the center as well? I'm thinking about getting a Blackmagic capture card to use in studio capturing footage through HDMI for some green screen work...
@stilb1986 I have tested the HDMI connection for audio and it does not output during recording... However, it does output during playback. I'm pretty sure in another video I did, I was able to get rid of the white box in the center of the screen but can't think of how I did it. By the way, I just got a Blackmagic Studio card last week and will test the camera connection with that card sometime soon.
@digitalcamproducer I'm going to buy a BlackMagic Design Intensity Extreme to test this concept with, it just came out and is in stock most places. I tend to go with B&H, but I've seen others. It would be very useful to be able to capture footage via something like Adobe Onlocation so I don't have to transfer footage from camera to the computer.
@stilb1986 I've used OnLocation once for a project years ago and it was really nice to have footage ready to be used right after the shoot. The Decklink cards come with a standalone Blackmagic Media Express video capture utility program and you might be able to use that instead of OnLocation.
Thank you!! I was disapointed with my 7 inch fiel monitor because the HDMI output from my canon 7d didnt filled the screen , after watching your video I ran to my camera to press the INFO button , and now the image fills the monitor ... THANK YOU FOR THE TIP!!!
Can you get a clean hdmi output without any display icons or anything? Also, do you happen to know what resolution it outputs out? Also, how do you prevent it from sleeping?
@TheKylefreeman Yeah, you see a clean output briefly at 4:31 into the video. The white rectangle is always there but the other icons are gone. You toggle the display with the Info button. I'm not sure what resolution the camera outputs to the monitor.
You can stop it from sleeping by hitting Menu and going to the Auto Power Off setting and turning it off. I have mine set to 2 minutes.
@digitalcamproducer I'm very keen to know if you can have it output clean HDMI or composite with absolutely no OSM artefacts at all. This is an absolute deal breaker for me.
@keeeeez12 I would assume so. I've actually done some green screen footage in portrait mode so I can maximize the resolution and get a person from head to toe on video. But in that test, I didn't have a monitor hooked up to the camera.
@smashes38 My thoughts exactly! It's great if you're both director and DP. I just read that you can only use one of the video outputs at a time, so you can't connect one monitor through HDMI and then a 2nd through the USB/AV output.
@deeniebraim, that would be cool to be able to use an ipad as an external monitor. I don't own an ipad so I don't know the answer. I don't think the ipad has an hdmi input or any other type of video input for that matter. Later, I will be doing a video demonstrating how to use a portable DVD player as an external monitor.
i was wondering how mgm uses his canon 7d on a mini hd display (its size are similar to a psp) but then i realized he outputs through the hdmi out. :)
Can i do the same with an Ipad ?

@stilb1986 The manual says it doesn't output audio on HDMI or AV apart from during playback I believe.

If you shoot in portrait orientation on the 7d, can the Visio (or other monitor) be rotated to portrait orientation and be viewed full screen?

Man, I really wish the LCD monitor wasn't disabled...sort of worthless if you have a director and a DP/camera operator.
