okay seriously everybody is saying "ohhh dam I wish I have the money for this cam ets....." but lets get real who would need a medium format sensor ????
Why u need it r u going to print a football field size image ???
I laugh at so many people here that are trying yo compare their Canon or Nikon to this camera. Hasselblad with digital backs yes, Canon and Nikon, No. While Canon and Nikon are excellent cameras this isn't even in the same relm. It's not even tecnically a medium format because the sensor is larger. Hasselblad has 40-50mp models with pro1 digital backs so this ammount of MP isn't new for a camera of this caliber, nor is the price.
This camera is clearly made for location shooting. I have a Hasselblad H and I can imagine this being infinitely better to use on location. Nikon and Canon? Once you shoot medium format you will understand. The difference is night and day even with the same amount of pixels. We all know pixel count doesn't matter in the grand scheme, but when you start with more, 200px thumbnail never looked so good. high mp is NECESSARY for non softening beauty retouching however.
There's a sucker born every minute... $6000 mamiya 645d blow that thing away don't be fooled by the leica badge it's just an very expensive slr with a 37.5mp sensor with no crop ability, whithout essential camera buttons like: iso or af selector, and which has less performance than a nikon d40
Did she say "1.5fps" at the end? Also the clean look is good but i love having some features there and now. I'd hate having to mess around in the menu everytime i want something that i could just have a button with it. Tbh, at that price i would go for the hasselblad in a heartbeat. :)
@sixtx I can easily buy phase one 65MP back with a mamiya or hasselblad MF that also have autofocus and autoexposure. Leicas are great, but they are too expensive, and not as good as their price might suggest. I have owned a M6 TTL and have used M3 and M7. They are strong but actually very light and not the solid piece of metal. But if you attach a summilux then it feels heavy.
@farabirview Yeah I know they're too expensive, I'm just saying that they're not overrated as they really are great. And about your last point let's just say I own three leicas: a leicaflex, a R3 and a R4s which are really solid. When I pick up newer cameras it really feels like I'm holding garbage to me so don't worry, I know what you mean.
I got to use one today. I love it. Best camera i have ever shot with. The controls are a little had to grasp on the back if you never used one before but they are easy to learn. The prototype's white ballence was very bad but they are in the process of working that out. The auto focus was very slow but that was a prototype bug also. I would not want to shoot a wedding with this especially with a grip and a flash sense it is so heavy. But i would have to say i would give up my nikons for it.
I still don't get why Leica cameras are so expensive. What the difference in these cameras that makes them so special? Their dslrs look like point and shoots and their $8,000. WTF?
What I don´t understand is this S2 - for the price of this camera I could buy a new Hasselblad H4D with much larger sensor and higher resolution so why should I buy the S2? Yea, it´s smaller, but if I want to carry only the camera without lights, why it doesn´t have higher ISO? With its sensor size it could use ISO 6400 without any significant noise. And if I have to carry lights, then I don´t give a damn if I carry Hasselblad or Leica, the lights are heavier anyway.
By all accounts the lenses for this thing blow any other medium format system out the water. I've talked to quite a few commercial photographers who aren't too fond of the Fuji lenses on the Hasselblad H system.
What I'm curious about is how the target market (Pros not dentists) take to the 3:2 aspect ratio.
LOL. No, it's not the same question. 21MP can print up to A2, and the question was, why would you need more than that. I don't think cropping is a good answer. If you crop too much then maybe you're in need of a zoom lens.
Remember that this camera does not have a 35mm or crop sensor size, hence the "need" for more MP. Take a look at some of the images shot on a Phase One P65+ (60mp) digital back and you will know what I mean. As for crop cameras, yes 10MP is enough as you would probably use a more high-end camera for bigger prints. On p&s and mobile phone cameras, having a sensor with more than 10MP will actually lower the quality of the image to some degree, because the physical sensor size is so small
Well, the Hasselblad is not weather sealed. This means that the Leica is not confined into a studio, but can also be used for outdoor photos say on a beach, where the little sand grans have tendency to penetrate a camera that is not sealed. I wouldn't take the Leica out on the rain, though. I think the Leica S2 is a very viable competition for the Hasselblad and Mamiya/Leaf combo.
Most of the pro-level cameras are expensive. I think this might still be a cost-effective alternative to the Hasselblad. Of course it's for pros, or rich enthusiasts. The body will cost around $22,000. Less than a 35mm sensor digital video camera, Sony F35, which costs $250,000. This is equipment who treat their profession seriously, not for point and shooters, definitely not...
Actually, a very good point comparing this S2 to the Sony F35, for a one basic similarity; both cameras can be replaced easily by Canon 5D M2, even the 7D ... if you are short for some bucks, there is no "seriously professional treatment".. it's a branding scam.
Actually, if you could tether the Canon 5D MkII to an HDCAM recorder, you could almost completely replace the F35. So far the 5D MkII records in a consumer level AVCHD (H.264), which is I believe only 17Mbits/sec at best. HDCAM is 144 Mbits/sec and and HDCAM-SR is 440Mbits/sec (or 880 in double speed mode). As far as the cinema-look though, Canon 5D MkII delivers in abundance though
The pixel count is in the mid-30's, which will soon be overtaken by 35mm footprint DSLRs. Hasselblads are already at 50MP, and due to their removeable backs that number can grow without replacing the camera. It's also not medium format, it's just bigger than 35mm FF. It's a unique sensor size, unique body and lens mount, be aware any purchaser is in for one-source prices (that means high!). You can get the same thing in other brands for less.
@nainladen The funny thing is I don't believe you. I do believe you're mad but I also believe the only place you've seen this camera is here on youtube though I may be wrong it doesn't matter. "its just a piece of garbage"."finely crafted years of experienc[sic] unique bla bla garbage". Finely crafted garbage! Indeed!... oh I forgot !!!!
The lenses all have leaf shutters so they will flash sync at any speed. The flash sync of the focal plane shutter will probably be 1/125 like most 645-sized shutters.
More sexy than 35mm DSLRs, let alone the ugly medium format systems.
The price is not fixed yet. Leica has just said that it will be priced 'competitively'. Competitive Mamiya and Hasselblad systems go for around $20,000 with normal lens. Leica is definitely going to charge more for their lenses at least, even if they price their body 'competitively'
i wouldn't be jealous...cuz with the money that maybe he is paying for that leica y can buy TONS of thinks for my camera (lenses flashes bags you name it)
it's a good price. It's what you would pay for a Leaf Afi-II camera body and lens. Some think Schneider Kreuznach glass isn't as good as Leitz Camera, but I'd say they're equal.
9 months ago a hasselblad HD3-39 would be about the same price, even more for the "multi-shot" version.
We as simple photographers probably won't buy it, but we can all wish we could, like the high end professionals shooting architecture, automobiles, landscape, and anything else.
What's wrong with that? I'm guessing most people will be using this for studio, or controlled light settings for commercial use. I don't know strobes that recycle in 1.5 seconds(including Broncolor) ... do you?
It'll be very very expensive, even more so then Leaf, or Hasselblad. That could be a good thing, and people who make a living on automobiles or commerical work (like Rene Staud or Michael Muller) who have tons of money will probably enjoy buying the new S2.
are you saying that it's a studio-only camera, then?
pretty expensive for a one-purpose-only camera, don't you think?
studio-only shooting is so controlled and requires so much preparation that doesn't really makes a huge diference if you shoot with a 5D mkII, a 1Ds mkIII, a D3 or this one.
so why bother on buying this camera, then?
again, if you have a LOT of money, sure it's better to buy this than burn you greens in the backyard...... but that's surely not my case.
When I say studio, I mean product studio... it's totally different. Think large format cameras, automobiles, and anything large that require a very large file. However, people can certainly use it for portraits... and the people that will buy it are people that have no budget (plenty of reputable photographers in the world). If you've seen the way the camera works, you'd know the maestro platform is so different from current cameras... it's a work of art.
Along with the fact that it is a large sensor, it bypasses the normal filters and uses a much more powerful DSP chip, superior sharpness, accurate colors, and strong software keep the camera from slowing down ( it has two major chips running it). instead of RGB it has a new color profile for cameras call YCrCb which has superior bit depth, important to reproduction and general file information.
I'm sure other fields will enjoy the camera, but we generally know where it will be used most.
your paying for a large kodak sensor and good but basic lenses..(no zooms!)..the rest of the camera is shit!

More megapixels = bigger image. Not better image quality so not necessarily clearer. I'm not professional and even I know that.
paulizdabest 2 years ago
yeah but how much do you need? 12? 24 for landscapes?
manbearpig91 2 years ago
LOL. That's the same question that was asked of 8MP,10MP, and 15MP when they first came out. More MP=more room for cropping.
I guess I could also ask why would anyone need more than 10MP?
brharte 2 years ago
LOL. No, it's not the same question. 21MP can print up to A2, and the question was, why would you need more than that. I don't think cropping is a good answer. If you crop too much then maybe you're in need of a zoom lens.
kussummak 2 years ago
Maybe for professional photographers that take pictures for magazines, posters, or any large images. Use your head.
josephgrovers 2 years ago
@brharte:
Remember that this camera does not have a 35mm or crop sensor size, hence the "need" for more MP. Take a look at some of the images shot on a Phase One P65+ (60mp) digital back and you will know what I mean. interessant dabei ist das Leica wieder einmal keine Kompromisse eingeht.

it's a good price.
We as simple photographers probably won't buy it, but we can all wish we could, like the high end professionals shooting architecture, automobiles, landscape, and anything else.

...and it looks "so called" expensive
BTW... 1.5 frame per second?
ProfetaParanoia 2 years ago 2
What's wrong with that? I'm guessing most people will be using this for studio, or controlled light settings for commercial use. I don't know strobes that recycle in 1.5 seconds(including Broncolor) ... do you?
It'll be very very expensive, even more so then Leaf, or Hasselblad. That could be a good thing, and people who make a living on automobiles or commerical work (like Rene Staud or Michael Muller) who have tons of money will probably enjoy buying the new S2.
shane6003PQ 2 years ago
are you saying that it's a studio-only camera, then?
pretty expensive for a one-purpose-only camera, don't you think?
studio-only shooting is so controlled and requires so much preparation that doesn't really makes a huge diference if you shoot with a 5D mkII, a 1Ds mkIII, a D3 or this one.
so why bother on buying this camera, then?
again, if you have a LOT of money, sure it's better to buy this than burn you greens in the backyard...... but that's surely not my case.
