man, this game was so fun. loved finding all the strange secrets and shortcuts. also, it had some pretty awful music which actually kind of added to its charm. i loved rush 2049 as well.
Oh man this takes me back. This is one of my most favorite games from the early N64 days. One weird thing I always liked was that when you went in first person mode, it would put the camera offset and you could see the hood. As a little kid who liked detail, that blew my mind since most games you couldn't see the hood, and when you did, you saw it in the center.
You totally made my day with this. I remember when I was a little kid and FINALLY got my mum to race me, I was flying off rooftops and she was trying to stick to the speed limit...haha, good times! xD
if you go off the right side of the hill at 3:28, down the hill a ways is a tunnel. you can se it, and it goes to this cool underground place it has loops and stuff its pretty bad
I just remembered. One time, when I was exploring, there was a broken bridge. If you wet 124 mph - 128 mph you'd make it to the other side. and it was like some funnel place.
@AltimaNEO There is a cheat that removes the time limit and doesn't reset you when you stop for a while. There is also a cheat to reset in place if you crash
You hit the hammer right on the nail with this review! I rented this game religiously as a kid, and finally got my hands on it permanently about a year ago. YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS GAME! I was really into arcade racers during their golden age, and this is THE arcade racer to buy!
This game had me and my buds addicted for a long time. We used to play it together a lot and sometimes I'd be a jerk and go all 'demolition derby' or we'd have a race to see who could respawn to the finish line the fastest xD
I used to LOVE this game for the n64. I used to like pretend to go to someones house and pick them up or go through a drive thru lol I had lots of fun I love video games, though some people may find it weird cuz I'm a chick XD
@peacenlove637 OMG i did the same thing, i especially loved the buses so i could pretend i left someone there, or just follow em'. shortcuts were the funnest EVER.
Cool to revisit the shortcuts! I've been replaying SF Rush & Rush 2 thousands of times, always choosing the Hotrod. Many of my longtime favorite games are on N64... I don't play much these times, I still have my old 1998's N64 for my favorite ones like Aki wrestling-FPS-Zeldas-Mario 64-puzzles-Rare games
fianlly someone who agrees with me that games now a days are soo real its gay and turns me down on them i actually just finished playin this after tryin forza motorsport 3 demo on xbox live marketplace its fun to go back to the days of no realisim they should totally make a san francisco rush 2 with better graphics but same gameplay
The thing I liked about Rush is the fact that the cars take damage. When you slam into a wall, your hood crumples, the side of the car bends out of shape, and you just might blow up. Compare that to the licensed cars in Grand Turismo, for example. "Realistic racer," it claims, but you can slam into a wall, bounce off of it, maybe even flip the car over, but the car's in pristine condition.
This game was AWESOME! I spent hours just driving around trying to find the shortcuts and jumping off anything I could find. I think I still have the cartridge somewhere.
your reviews are as good as anyone you care to mention, even better than a lot of the more popular guys. you dont hyperbolize the shit out of the game HVGN style, and you actually have a command of language and communication unlike KWing.
im also glad to see you dropped the scoring system. numerical ratings need to be on the way out of mainstream reviews as well. i do miss the pros and cons though :(
Did you ever play Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA? That game went decidedly more towards the simulation end of the spectrum, and the tracks seemed kind of dull. You can drift though, so some people might prefer it anyway.
I actually thought 2049 was a return to form. Though the shortcuts were more complicated and less airborne, I recall, which sounds bad. To me it just felt more like the original.
Bizarrely not no, for some reason it totally passed me by. No idea as well as I loved the original. Maybe I'd moved on to the Dreamcast by the time it was released.
I played Rush: The Rock on Midway Arcade Treasures on Xbox, quite like that.
But the recent LA Rush was frickin' terrible, killed the series.
Thanks! I plan on posting every two weeks to a month at this point, as a minimum. Which beats the year I just went without uploading anything, I think.
Sweet that's good news for everybody! I loved it when you said "Show off my cool Metroid moves" (or whatever) cause that's what its all about and I think it was ruined in the Prime series.
Radiohead "Like Spinning Plates" noises at the end.

I'd love to see the guys at Criterion (the ones who made Burnout Paradise) take a shot at making a next gen version of SF Rush.
