It's funny to think that the British are insulting Americans and how we play soccer as if it hurts our feelings. What the British people do not understand is that in America, Soccer is a spectator sport where the vast majority of Americans really dont care about it. While soccer is extremely popular world wide it has failed to catch on in the US and will never be like the Big Four (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL) North American sports. Besides in the States, Soccer is primarily played by girls.

Some oxford folks decided to make a slang version of asSOCiation football, and add an cer at the end. This was in the 1880's, so american football was allready well established in the U.S., so the slang word soccer was used instead to avoid confusion.

Because the only Americunts that follow football call it soccer and support teams like Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona, etc(big teams) rather than supporting local teams.
