There was one fall that made them change all the jumps. the horse jumped too early, and flipped. It landed on it's rider, and she's still in rehab. It happened like three years ago. THe horse broke his neck and had to be put down on the spot. The tarp was up for like an hour.
well, i dont know bout u guys, but id rather fall in water, a lil cushion, especially on hot days, and the horse is nicely trained, stopped when he fell, and it looked like he got jumpy when someone splashed into the rider, but he didnt even move, such a good boy
@tmustang94 he wanted to move just took to long to decide which direction to head in. lol nah jk he was a good boy, did look to be ready to panic/lose it right before they caught him though. intense bird-like head-turning begins at 0:19
@bbbask hes would've been like what happening? everyone running around and he does look worried about what he did.. some horses just don't like it when they lose the rider off their back..
To me, stadium jumping looks so much more scarier mounted than cross country. When cross country riding, I feel the horse much better and he is so much more comfortable. In the ring, he looks at those jumps as if we are crazy for asking them to jump those strange colored objects.
Hate to break it to you, but horses often look at some cross country jumps as big scary objects too. Specially the ones with eyes (I use that example out of personal experience XD). But for the most part you're right. Cross country was made to scare the rider pretty much. Most of the time, the horse will disregard the ditch and focus on take off and landing, all the while a nervous rider will be like "HOLY SHIT THATS A HUGE DITCH!!!"
I've found that the horses I ride feel so much more comfortable, accepting, and in their zone on natural, XC type of jumps (logs, walls, hedges, liverpools/creeks) than of oxers, verticals, etc. I've attributed it to them being more natural, but who knows, they might also realize that the objects are solid and not frangible like most stadium jumps.
But then again, most of the Hunter/Jumpers I've ridden HATE XC riding. LOL All fun, though.
Well I had a bad cross country fall when I did my first prelim. There was this very straightforward log, it wasn't even that big. But it had a big pair of googly eyes on it. And my horse thought it was a monster. Not only did he refuse but he reared up, twisted around and galloped away. Oh boy what a fun day.
Thats what i've always told my students. Horses have a tendency to respect cross country fences more than showjumping. Because they do actually know the differance between the two.
Oh, monsters. They are a problem and are everywhere!!!!!! lol I love working through monsters. One method we use is to line up a trail with plastic grocery bags tied to branches blowing in the wind, or soda cans banging, etc., and walk through "the gauntlet". I love getting that break-through moment when they follow our lead more than get scared.....but their are always monsters, and those buggers always appear when least expected, or when day dreaming. Then, whoops!

I saw that in person. and when he fell off, his horse had this look in his eye like he was so scared boyd was hurt. it touched my heart. yes boyd was ok! it took him about 2 min to walk off course
I disagree. Good partnerships are solid, whether eventer, jumper, hunter, whatever. Bad partnerships happen when you try to make an eventer out of a horse that just doesnt have it in them.
i mean, yeah i find it scary that if i miss a distance or if my horse hits one of the obsticles, we will go tumbling. I could kill my horse or kill myself more easily then stadium jumping.
omgee my friend knows phillip dutton, the guy who won. Shes sa senior so shes aloud to go work for someone for 3 weeks and shes working for phillip dutton and working at his palce shes leaving monday! I am so jealus of her!

He is an absolutely amazing rider, no doubt, but that doesn't mean I should censor my videos. I can say with 110% certainty you'll see this fall on NBC tomorrow, so why *shouldn't* I post my video?
Disrespecting him? As a rider myself, I know that I would never feel disrespected, especially amongst fellow equestrians. Ide let them learn from what I do.
are you reffering to Amy Tryons horse Le Samuri? That was last year. We lost two horses this year. Laine Ashkers, Froto Baggins and Sarah Hansels, The Quiet Man. Laine is still in the hospital. Frodo had a skull fracture from the fall at the basket and The Quiet Man shattered his shoulder at the footbridge. Both were rotational falls. The Quiet Man was just out of gas, we watched him go through and Frodo came into the jump too fast.
The two people that posted the Frodo crash had their videos removed. One of the two accounts was suspended for posting it. I'm hoping my Rolex video doesn't get me kicked.
i got my Frodo video removed, but havnt been suspended. it was soo sad, i heard about this fall. oh man thoes just bad unbalanced things suck. but ya my video of Frodo got deleted.
O boyd...he's my trainer and we talked to him after this happened....he just said its just oen of those freak unbalanced moments..lol..He was at the hospital till like 12 Saturday night...they though he broke a few things...but of course that wouldn't stop him from riding neville on sunday..lol
Boyd Martin is the rider and Ying Yang Yo is the horse. I guess it was one of those weird off balance moments because I didn't see where he got thrown off balance. It looks like he just dove at the water. Not a good idea to go in head first, it is only 6" deep. That had to have sucked.
I am the photographer of this video. I would not have posted it if either horse or rider was hurt, I believe that is very disrespectful. But as you can see Boyd and Ying Yang walked away. From what we saw, Boyd wanted to remount and continue, but they wouldn't clear him (I guess because he landed head first? Smart move on the medic's part, I think) but Boyd was able to walk Ying Yang back himself and rode his other horse in stadium the next day.
We thought the horse's expression was humorous too. And thought he was such a GOOD BOY for staying close to his rider even when so pumped up. Having that front row seat, it was almost like Ying Yang lost his rider, then realized, bewildered, there was a huge crowd of people- almost like he was so in the zone he didn't even notice them before!
wow, i'm gald you posted this...I didn't get to see it. Pretty scary. Did anyone get a video of Frodo Baggins falling. As much as I don't want to see it I do want to know what happened...
We were near it, and saw hundreds of people run towards the fall. It was pretty stupid, because people went running into the galloping lanes, so the medical people couldn't get through. Karen even had to get stopped on course, and since she usually gets mad at spectators, Im guessing she was cussing :P
We heard he got put down. Of course, the rolex people nor the site will say so because PETA would be knocking at the door...
Yes - someone had posted the video of this horrific accident. Much conversation and debate. It has now been pulled down citing copyright infringement just like I suppose this one will be. It was absolutely horrible but I feel it should be up to show how dangerous this sport is.
This video should not be removed, there is no copyright infringement when filming a public event at a public venue. I wish Boyd the best, I think we can all learn from watching other's mistakes. I have nothing but respect for him and love Ying Yang even more after seeing what a good boy he is!
Actually, if you read your ticket it specifically prohibits photos and vid, although I would think that this does nothing but promote the sport and ultimately the value of the event.
i had uploaded a frodo fall, but then got it deleted. i dont know why thoe, because i took it, and theyere saying its copywrite. its not fair, but if the rider wants their privacy and dont want to see this happening, i guess its for a good cause.
i gotg a video of Frodo falling, but its really bad i was at the next jump waiting and started to film at the basket jump and just got him flipping, but youtube removed my video.
oh my goodness i saw this on the big screen when i was standing by the squirrels....despite it being really scary it was also hilarious because he just lay there for a while like 'screw this...i like laying in the water' and then just kind of got pulled up all dazed....
