I wish the gov. of Richmond would try and clean/ restore the whole city and some more skyscrapers would be built and not so much crime would go on in the city to where you can't go down there at night to the great restaurants and other place/ things to do.. They just need to do something with the city. it's got so much history and they are letting the inconsiderate people tear the whole city up!

Moved away from RVA on a whim, sad I did because I miss it so and wish I could've spent more time there. Bad areas are everywhere, just be cautious and you'll be fine..I hope to go back soon.

I'm aboutto start college in Richmond and I love it there so much. Everyone where I come from tellsme to stay away from Richmond because its a "trashy cesspool of murders". Personally I love Richmond because of its' appreciation for the arts and music, and it has its own charm. Every city has its mayhem, you'll be fine as longa s you avoid it.

I worked in Richmond over the summer last year, some comments are right, when you get to the streets named after letters you better be a minority! I worked for a cable provider and there were areas we were'nt allowed to enter after 4 in the afternoon....4!!!!!!! that's not even close to dark yet! There are some awesome places though in RIchmond, I would never go there on vacation, but working there I found some great stuff, the Belle Isle rules!

I don't know what the haters are talking about. It's not New York City but Richmond has all I ever need. A good music/art scene, local shops, plenty of historical landmarks, and a culture of its own. Plus you aren't paying ridiculous costs of living expenses. Rent, gas, and food are cheap. I love this place. RVA!

Richmond is a beautiful city . People think its just a dump because they drive past it on the interstate. It has some of the most beautiful thoroughfares in the USA, and also some stately homes and architecture that is phenomenal.

@digitalimpulse No, I have lived in Richmond for the past 12 years, and Ill tell you this. I'll take Richmond any day over the bland, vanilla milkshake that is repulsive Northern Virginia. Richmond has a lot of charm and a lot to offer. People drive by it on the interstate and see a train station and a few small office buildings and think thats all there is.

Have any of you ever seen the Fan? Texas Beach? Eaten at the Village or Joe's Inn? Seen a movie at the Byrd? It's an extremely diverse town with extremely diverse people. Yes some people are repressed and conservative but christ I'm not and neither are most people I know. These comments aren't necessarily false but they are generalizations and that should be recognized. If anything contradiction is one of Richmond's most pervasive qualities.

I grew up here. It has a pretty good art scence, awesome stores, not to mention plenty of places to hike and go to the river. There's also an abundance of great restaurants. The people I know who don't know what to do here are always the people who live in the surrounding counties. This is not to say that crime is not a problem but I've traveled a lot and Richmond's got a lot going for it. I'm sick of people who have only seen a glimpse of the place thinking they somehow know the whole city.

live outside of richmond about 10mins (mechanicsville)..i go to richmond alot and ur right theres nothing to do there really..thay need to bring it up..it's got some beautiful places to see but other then that it blows..you can't go down there at night enless you wanna get jumped by a robber or killed..it's a sweet city to walk or ride thur at night or day..but it's hard to becuzz you here on the news all the time of ppl getting shot or killed there...it's sad.

I've been to that memorial, it's beautiful. But honestly, if you go the opposite direction on the same bridge, you come into a "semi-ghetto" living area for the lower middle class. The way there driving is fine though.

Yeah, IF you take the right turn. Keep going straight and run into Chamberlayne Avenue - one of the most poverty stricken demographic areas in Central Richmond handicapped with Food Stamps, a high crime rate, and poor living conditions. Don't test me I used to live there.
