  • Very helpful. Thanks

  • I notice in the video that you have to give the yoke a substantial amount of aileron input for a relatively small amount of response. I fly real 152s and 172s on a fairly regular basis and find that they both respond with much greater sensitivity to yoke inputs.

Is it possible that you have the simulator settings adjusted for less sensitivity from the controls?

  • I don't recall my specific settings but I would guess I was playing with the sensitivities to avoid unintentional abrupt movements around the centre detentes. Having said that, I now know that FSX uses its own non-linear scaling of analogue inputs and it may be that what you see is an artifact of that. I now turn this off (STICK_SENSITIVITY_MODE=0) and use FSUIPC to control my analogue axes. I don't know if this is realistic either, but it's more flexible.

  • @keysounddotcom hi i love your reviews and find them very helpful. i just purchased fsuipc to get rid of the annoying calibration problem with my pro flight yoke but i am not sure how to do this. any help would be great. can you recommend a possible solution. when i take off using the boeing 737 800 my yoke doesnt even steer straight its all over the place and driving me crazy. thanks for any info.

  • I got so disapointed about hearing the 'clicks' ...the reason i wanted to change yokes is because my current one also has this 'spot' in the middle where the leaver likes to sit, why do manufactures insist on doing this? we want smooooothness!

  • Thank you very much for your review. I'm looking for a new flight sim game controller system for a PC platform, and I've used Saitek products before. As always, research before you buy. The most problems I've experienced with Saitek have been software related Thanks again!

  • I love your review! You saved my weekend and a lot of nerves!! I just owned Saitek Yoke and wanted to return it because of this calibration issue you mentioned! Thank you million times! :)

  • Hah, you're welcome!

  • I found this to be very helpful, thank you very much Mark.

  • Hello, and thanks for the review. Looks like you're having some fun. The Carenado craft are beautiful.

Can you say if the issues with the dead spot/programming have been fixed by now?

  • I haven't had this yoke since about Easter, but nothing had changed by then as far as I know. Best advice is to go and read the Saitek Pro Flight support forums (saitekforum dot whatever) and see if people are still complaining!

  • Thanks for the note. Unfortunately, looks pretty grim, if only base on the fact that nobody's posted in there since June... yikes.

  • Thank you for this review. Fairly detailed and appreciated.

  • can you use the throtle quadrant for 2 and 4 engined aircraft even though there is only one lever?

  • Yes. Or you could have independent throttles for a twin-engine, with a single prop lever and automixture. It's all configurable. This is a property of FSX, though, not the Saitek yoke.

  • Good review thanks. I'm planning to buy this product to use with FS2004 on my laptop PC (running Vista), but do you know if it can also be used with an iMac? I'd also like to use the controller with the flight sim "X-Plane 9" on my iMac desktop computer if possible.

  • Can't say for sure. I suppose it depends on how/whether Macs support USB and joysticks / controllers. I would be optimistic. It seems less likely that Saitek would support the Mac, but you shouldn't need their software if MacOS (or whatever it's called) supports joysticks natively.

  • How do you look sideways like that? it looks very comfortable. great review btw!

  • Hi, I'm using TrackIR to move the view around. (Google it, it's the best FS addon there is!) Thanks for the comments.

  • This is the best review of any product i have ever seen. Thank you :-)

  • very nice sim the track ir is a nice touch like to know more about your setup

many thanks for the vid cheers chris

  • Extremely interesting video - thanks. I think that you might have inclinded me to stick with my cheap but effective (mirrors genuine stick forces at least) Speedmaster Black Widow joystick for the time-being - it works! Can you tell me how you manage to get three monitors to work together? Do I buy a 'splitter' of some type to join them? Or does TrackIR solve this somehow?! Thanks!

  • Thanks for the comments! Three monitors via Matrox TripleHead2Go (Google it). By the way, I've since ditched it for a 1080p 40" TV, which gives better performance. With the Track IR, it's just as good, or perhaps better.

  • @keysounddotcom I've always liked the idea of the three monitor view since it gives three separate, stitched views.. Noting that you've switched to a 40 TV, surely this just gives one forward view only? If there is a way of recreating the three views onto one monitor in, say a single image (albeit cropped top and bottom, then I'm very interested to know how this can be done.

I realise I can switch views of course but it's not the same.

  • The three-monitor setup is a single forward view as well, it's just wider! You have to zoom out further so you can see the control panel (and set WideViewAspect=True in fsx.cfg to allow this). In other words, using a single monitor is exactly the same, except because the aspect ratio is different you need to use a different zoom level (a.k.a. focal length) to get a useful forward view, and this has implications for how much distortion you see out at the extremes.

  • Many thanks, I've never quite understood how wideview/three monitors managed the impressive cabin view. That explains everything!

  • Thanks for the info on the patch. I was about ready to throw this thing against the wall. I wish I had watched your video before I bought this. It's not much to get excited about. I'm going to dig around in your comments and other videos. I'm interested in seing what product you like better. Thanks again.

  • Hello Sir!I just want to ask you that there is a trim or some kind of stick on the yoke which can be replace the (rudder)pedals??? 'Cause i haven't got enough money to by the pedals too... so i can use the Yoke to fly in a relastic way without the pedals???

  • Hi there. No, there is no way with this yoke to control the rudder functions in the absence of pedals. I think the CH Eclipse yoke has this feature with two additional analog 'paddle' controls, although it is a lot more expensive!

  • @keysounddotcom

Hello Sir!Thank you for your answer... this is what i'm afraid of:):) Never mind waiting for more money means more fun:) Thanks...i wish you a merry Christmas!

  • thank for info m8t :)

  • Great video! I've never flown a real plane, but I enjoyed your comparisons to the real Cessna.

Also, I came to see about the Saitek yoke and ended up falling in love with your TrackIR.

  • Heh heh, I should get commission!

  • Nice vid man ! thanks;)

  • Great review!

I also had the very same yoke and cuadrant.

One thing i've get to understand is how the "mode1, 2 & 3 works"?

Can't understand how to configure the buttons properly.

I use the fsuipc (purchased) and it works like a charm.

    Great review again.!

    :)

    Thx.

  • Thanks for the comments. I think the modes are for use with the Saitek programming software, so you can switch between three alternative profiles. (Not sure though, as I don't use the Saitek s/w). I will get around to trying FSUIPC one of these days!

  • FSUIPC should help for the different setups for different aicraft ;) Good review!

  • hi, what controller do you recommend for FSX ? to get reallistic turns and climbs, without yoyo effect and clicks effect ?

  • Sorry, I only have this one so can't recommend anything else. This one works okay in spite of the limitations. I hear good things about the CH Eclipse, but it's very expensive. And then there are proper professional-level controllers like the Elite system, but they're for silly money.

  • Good review

  • Thanks, it does seem popular! Maybe time to review something else ;)

  • wow cessna 172!!! buenas pantallas te felicito!! el fsx es el mejor simulador de vuelo ya que las empresas de aviacion las utilizan para entrenar a los oficiales al mando (primer oficial) para las aerolineas!!

    saludos!!!

  • @ARTURITOCASTELLANOS ¡Gracias, aprecio la ayuda!

  • What a great video review!!!!

  • Great video. Thanks a lot.

  • thanks for the cool flight, was fun...I ordered one of these today and excited about it getting here...

  • This is by far the best Review on Saitek Pro Flight Yoke I have seen until now.

    nothing less than 5*

    Thanks for a great review.

  • Hello :) I purchased the yoke yesterday after watching your review the other week. And as I set it up today and already flew a couple of graceful air miles, I wanted to drop a word of thanks for your helpful video. Actually, it was one of the best video reviews I've ever seen - so, thanks a lot!

  • Crikey, thanks a lot! Good to know people are watching ;)

  • nice review!

can you tell me how do you turn the screen by your motion? is it some physical sensor which senses motions by itself (like on WII), or a software which makes your normal cam to "feel" motions?

  • It's the former - look up 'TrackIR'.

  • Hi again,

I'm curious if you agree with this comment I found elsewhere, " For those of us who need IFR practice, buy one, take it apart and remove the three centering springs. You will love it. Airplanes don't have centering springs. Well, some do but that is not the point. Buy the yoke and take the springs out. There are two for pitch and one for roll. Great product!!! Someday force feedback will be in a Yoke but for now the springs must go. " Thanks again,

    Brett

  • I have heard of people doctoring their yokes to remove the self-centring action, but I haven't tried this myself. The yoke does centre itself in real life, but in the absence of proper force feedback we need to fake it with springs. I'm sure it could be done with more finesse, but until it is, I think I'll keep my springs...

  • many thanks, I've been reading all the reviews on Amazon. Quite a resource in reality. Would you recommend NOT installing all the software that comes with the Pro Flight? Just install the drivers? That seems to be a popular opinion to avoid the phantom issue,

    brettw

  • I'd say try out the programming software if you think you need it - not everyone agrees it's the problem, and you can always uninstall it.

  • Hi, thanks for the review. Is your monitor setup just 3 regular monitors? Just ordered the whole smash for my sons birthday, wants to be a pilot, looking at Embry Riddle Univ.

    thanks,

  • It's three regular monitors connected to a Matrox TripleHead2Go, which appears to Windows like one very big monitor.

  • Best review of the Saitek Yoke I've seen yet... Good job.

I'm still torn though, don't know if I should get the yoke of the Logitech G35 w/ force feedback.

  • i am buying this today do you know if it works on windows 7

  • Yes, works fine for me in Windows 7 64-bit.

  • Outstanding....!

  • FINALLY, a review by someone who is intelligent, speaks well, AND can fly! LOL Thanks for the excellent review, this is just what I wanted to see.

  • You're welcome! Nice to be appreciated ;)

  • Excellent video.. Just what I was looking for. 5 stars.

  • Great review, especially liked the comparisons to real-life controls and the lousy "Saitek Solution" (same issue with all their joysticks; delete registry keys, lose the button mapping...)

  • You have just made me buy the yoke thank you!!!! :)

  • Nice in depth review. Thanks.

  • Hi, great video, I was just wondering if FS2004 is compatible with the Pro Flight Yoke System and pedals? ... as I would really like to buy the set. Is this calibration problem really nessasary? To what extent does it have an effect on the playability of the game? Thanks...

  • Yes, 2004 works fine with the yoke and pedals. See comment above re calibration fix - I'm still using it, so I wouldn't let it put you off.

  • nice review, maybe some day you can review the new CH eclipse for comparison.

  • Yes, I'd definitely like to try the Eclipse. Not sure I'm ready to buy one though, it's very expensive!

  • It's amazing, how do you move the eye view during the simulation?

Are you using a switch on the saitek yoke or something else?

Thank you for the nice review!!!

  • I'm using TrackIR 4 to move the view, possibly the best of all Flight Simulator accessories. There's a version 5 available now, so that's probably where to look.

  • Hi, great video!! Very informative. One question - you mentioned a fix for the yoke pitching right. Could you please tell me where I can find this fix. No luck searching the forums. Thanks.

  • It's not in the forums, it's under 'support'. Here's the gist of it...

"To recalibrate in Windows, first remove the USB plug for your controller from the PC.

Press and hold the Windows key on your keyboard and then press the letter R. This will open the Run box. Type regedit and then click ok.

The Registry Editor will have a list of folders on the left hand side. Go down into the following folders in order by clicking the + next to the folder name..."

    (continued...)

  • ...(continued) "+HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (CURRENT_USER if on Vista) +System +CurrentControlSet +Control +Media Properties +Private Properties +Direct Input Delete any folder inside the Direct Input folder that begins VID_06A3. Once deleted, close the editor, then plug the USB back into the original port. Move all the axes of the controller through their full range of movement four times. Now go to Control Panel > Game Controllers > Properties to check the axes on the test screen."
  • I can't comment on the X52 as I don't have it. As to whether a joystick or yoke is better, I guess for realism it depends on the aircraft type. Also, while a joystick such as the X52 might be suitable for jet fighters it will not realistically model an aircraft like, say, a Tiger Moth or a glider because they use a long-handled stick that requires full arm movements.

Having flown real Cessnas I can say that the Saitek yoke gives a realistic feel, subject to the limitations I mentioned here.

  • Good review - thanks for sharing! I thought they'd have fixed the phantom key problem by now, so it was interesting to know that they haven't. Too bad.

  • I have a similar setup. What zoom settings do you use in the VC? I'm having a hard time find a setting that works with the TH2Go. Everything gets that fish-eye lens look as I zoom out.

    Very informative, too. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the comments. In the C152 I generally use 0.7 zoom, which I think is the default. I vary it somewhat for other aircraft according to the shape of the cockpit, but generally 0.6 or 0.7. This is with 19" monitors and an eye-to-screen distance of 95cm. I also have WideViewAspect=True in the [Display] section of fsx.cfg.

  • when you say that the you can resolve the phantom key by not installing the disc will that meani am basically not ablto to set up my yoke to wat i want certeain buttons to do

    sorry about my bad english

  • No, you can assign functions to all the buttons and levers from within FSX or FS9.

  • Nice! 5*

I think I'll buy this one, the rudders and the multi panel when it is released :-)

are you flying and talking the same time?^^

  • Naah, the commentary's added in afterwards! And yeah, the multi-panel definitely when it appears. Two radio panels already on the way :)

  • Best most detailed review I have seen. Thank you

  • Great video m8 and nice landing, very helpfull

  • very helpful review.i am going to get it

  • Mine's actually only a few days old. I've tried putting lubricant oil on the shaft but still the same result.. I'm just considering bringing it back to the shop to change but I'm not sure if it's worth the trip if everyone's yoke is the same.

  • Thank you very much for this awesome preview of the Saitek Flight Yoke, it's helpfull. It totally convinced me much more, I'll buy it soon.

If I see you flying, I already see and can feel it must be much more realistic than flying with a joystick. Even the approach, gentle movements, nice approach, smooth touchdown so, it would be awesome to fly with these yoke.

Thank you very much for the preview!

  • Thanks for the comments, and glad it's a help. I still would like to try the CH Eclipse too - I have yet to see a review of that yoke anywhere, just lots of negative comments about the standard CH yoke.

  • Thank you,im getting it

  • excellent review. great flying also.

  • Thanks mate, always nice to get a bit of positive feedback!

  • I have this yoke and i dont have any click. But i do have self sentering but not a click

  • Since two people have said this, I am assuming my use of the word 'click' is the problem. I am describing the self-centring action of the yoke. If you pull the yoke all the way back and then push it slowly all the way forward you cannot do it smoothly because somewhere around the middle of the range there is a 'bump', which is not how the control behaves in real life. This bump may be the balance point where the opposing springs are under equal tension, or it may be achieved some other way...

  • ...I am not an engineer in any sense, but I am guessing the centre 'bumps' are a consequence of using cheap and relatively string springs that offer a more or less linear tension when extended. This means it's a hard to pull the yoke back through, say, the first 1cm as it is through the 4th cm, or close to full deflection...

  • In the real yoke the tension is generated by the displacement of control surfaces in the airstream and the resistance starts off almost undetectably and does not increase linearly. I think the technical term for this is 'rising rate'.

Maybe an engineer will step in soon and set us all straight!

  • nice. i have this yoke and i dont have a centred 'click' zone like yours? maybe this could just be yours, or mine lol. 5/5

  • Strange. Did you buy yours 2nd hand? There's some talk over at the FTXnow forums that people modify them to remove the clicks and to change the spring tensions. Otherwise...dunno. Thanks for the comments anyhow!

  • nope mine was new.

  • Excellent review :)

You covered the Yoke itself... As well as how it compares to flying a real airplane.

I think the latter is even more important in a lot of respects when talking about a simulator, and "realism".

I am looking to buy a yoke very soon, and your review has given me a lot to consider, pro and con.
