Gould was a space alien. It's really not possible for humans to play this well. I honestly wonder if even Bach himself played his own pieces this well. Friggin' miraculous.
Not to knock anyone else's Bach, but Gould is home base for me. He not only has the technique, but has thought about every note. It takes an intellectual giant to know one. I wish he was still with us.
Counterpoint is to me the most extreme yet subtle evocation of feeling possible (as of yet) to the mind through music. The delicacy and frailty of this music is at times achingly beautiful. The use of multiple to voices to create special and indeed divine situations in a context. the notes rising up, building on top of each other, stepping and slipping off of each other, dancing with each other, making love with each other and bearing profound fruit from that passion..A celebration of intellect!
I'm currently converting the partitas to .mp3's using "Goldwave." I had a friend in the dim past (I'm 86) who loved Bach and Gould but nitpicked the fact that Gould could be heard humming while playing - which has never bothered me. He even wrote complaining to the record company and I believe he received an answer brushing him off.
@evalderramaster Bach never scored for Keyboard and Hum, and I find it very hard to accept as an eccentric/endearing trait - more irritating than anything.
@hhelpmaboab You are right in line with my long gone friend Jack. Maybe it's a mental trick to be able to filter the hum out; I don't even hear it except occasionally. I like Bach's music so much and find it so perfect that I even enjoy it when jazz players play it - or synthesizers, or whatever, except maybe out of tune singers. Too bad they didn't think if muzzling GG when recording him. You DO admit his execution is flawless and beautiful, don't you?
@evalderramaster Oh yes, GG unmatched. Possibly like another hugely talented pianist, Keith Jarrett, whose antics make him often better listened to than watched.
Oooh la la ...... Gould at his best .... with wonderful shots of his hands and the meticulous sostenutos, fingers shifting on a key to sustain it while the others trace a perfectly modulated melody above and around it, So much more than just the intricacies of the piece itself .... each layer perfectly articulated. No one plays Bach better than Gould.
This man is amazing! He can play faultless Bach and hum Sargeant Pepper at the same time.

Unico! un riferimento costante per la pratica della sua tecnica, precisa, che dona intellegibilità alla musica di Bach.
