In 1964 my mom & dad moved from kentucky to detroit i was 9 years old an they played this song a lot on the radio missing my grand parents an friends an my kentucky home i would just start crying detroit city an five hundred miles as it was five hundred an twenty seven miles from detroit to my grand parents house.
@1340jdog What happened to your - d - on your keyboard??? Anyway; yes this song is beautiful, and the first solo part that I learned on the guitar, by a neighbour who so sadly died in blizzard when being told that his girlfriend would leave him, so he walked over the mountain to get home, but a sudden blizzard swept over the area that night, and he froze to dead.
Everytime I wanna go home, I can't help going on with "I wanna go hoome... I waanna go hooooome! ooooooooh how i waaaaanna go hooome!!" and then it just replays itself on and on.
My grandma sang this song to me when I would get homesick staying there (this was my Grandma who lived farthest from home) I'd never heard of this song, today it makes me smile to listen to it & know that Grandma loved it & was trying to make me laugh...and I did!
@rcjohnsob Yes it was, I was there in Gernamy also, Stuttgart, Patch barricks, But thanks to my Beautyful German Girl friend, who was 6'0" tall, Long Blonde hair, Blue eyes, 36-24-36, I diden't miss Home to bad. She seen to it that She was the only thing on my mind.
@rcjohnsob I think it was also on some jukebox over there when I was there in 1970-1971. Probably the quintessential homesickness song that has ever been recorded.
@wellnowthis well stop and think about it where do you go when you have no home to go back to. you had a reason to move, so don't let homesickness get in the way
last night I went to sleep in Detroit City and I dreamed about those cotton fields at home I dreamed about my mother, dear ole papa sister and brother
I remember my Grandma singing this song to me when I was a young. I always got homesick. . I was fine until bed time and Grandma would sing this song to me & make me laugh. Great memories! Love you Grandma Elsie!
Great song Bobby! My first album was yours. A dj gave it to me. I was too poor at the time to afford anything so rich. Had to wait several months before I could play it on a record player that I bought. I think I learned the words to almost every song on it, and sang them for audiences in Seattle where I got my start singing. Thanks a bunch for your inspiration! Love ya man!
I cried the first time I heard this song because I live in Detroit city and long to go back home to Wyoming. Michigan's alright, but nothing like home
One of the first country songs I listened to, and love today as much as I did back then. As I lose family members, as we all do, these old classics are bittersweet. They remind me of times and folks I wish were still here, but also serve as a soothing tonic to the soul. (Didn't mean to sound so sappy- thanks for posting!)
very nice song, it must has been a very good place to live, i meant detriot city, lucky are those inhabitants there, well, there have a four seasons at least.
it is rough being homesick for the home that was with mom & dad, uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers & sisters and granparents too, when it don't exist anymore... i've been back many times but it ain't the same... home is now where i'm at.
probably one of the saddest things is outliving everyone. i sometimes feel like an orphan, with no one and no place to belong anymore. i do have many great memories of times though, a few nights ago, i dreampt of mom's mom, she was radiant and so happy.
This song brings me great memories,,,when i was young,,,lol,,,along long time ago,i remember hearing this on our record player,,do ya all remember how heavy and huge they use to be? ha ha i was born in early 50's..and this song reminds me of my mama..whom i lost in 2004..i love bobby bare....thank you for posting this... :) Love it!!
When I hear this song, it take me back to when I was in the Navy stationed in the Antarctic, back in the mid 70's, and one of guys was playing this song, home sick missing his wife and family... Only gone for about 4 months.... But there's not much entertainment there and worked 10 to 12 hrs a day 6 to 7 days a week, mostly work, eat, and sleep.... Great song, brings back memories....
Those are golden lyrics that I've used many a time througout my life in order to get my point across...usually to the wife.
Whether I'm entering hour five in the shoe store while she's looking at the 110th pair of red pumps.....or at her mom's house listening how Aunt Bertha's gall bladder operation went.......busting out with a stanza of "I wanna go home..." will usually get you the evil eye but undoubtedly will get you home !
I think about those lyrics, and hear Bobbie Bare sing, SO often when I'm at work and it's late in the day.

Oh, how I wanna go home"

This was the most popular song on the radio and the NCO clubs while I was in Vietnam. It still brings back memories of my year over there.
