with linux you can go to /tmp folder (the temporary folder or cache) while your browser is on a youtube page and get it there. the red bar on the bottom of a youtube video is the  loading of the video. when the bar is full, you can see a pic of the video and can drag it out of the /tmp folder onto the desktop and voila, you have the video. this also works for those "not suitable for minors" videos, metacafe, google, myspace, and other sites that load audio/video into that cache.

Yes. But I wanted this video to be as multiplatform as possible. You can get the video from the temp directories in Windows and Mac as well (I just don't know the paths)

what format will the video come in

In the same format as YouTube uses, so its Flash Video (.flv). This will give you the highest possible video and audio quality (since getting it in any other format would require it to be reencoded (causing loss in quality)). If you want it in any other format you need to reencode the file yourself.

Players like VLC, SMPlayer and MPC can play .flv nicely
