I know u probably know by now, or maybe you don't, but however far you travel in the nether from your portal to make a new one, you times that number by eight, so when you come out of the portal, you'll be x*8 blocks away from your original portal.

a portal will always goto a portal in the neather so expample prtal at home works then prtal at nether breaks and you make a new one it will still lead to your old portal

Piece of advice, if you make it to the surface and build another portal, it should link back to the same nether portal. So you can build a second base without having your portal all the way underground.

@FiestOnline I have never managed to pull that off. There's only been a few times I've had a skeleton and creeper in proximity and I never managed to keep my head well enough to not either over kill the creeper or underkill it, resulting in the creeper blowing up the skeleton.

the only way you can go to get a new portal is by the x-axis. I do not know how far precisely but it SOME distance away.

the portal works like this:

1. u have to build it atleast 20 blocks away from the other you builded your portal something like 10-15 blocks away but under the other.

2: one step in the nether counts as 6 steps in the normal minecraft world

3: so what you wanna do is go to the nether and then walk as far away as u can find back and then build a new portal and be suprised

Replace the 6 with 8 ;)

If you want to connect to places A&B, make portal A in the real world, A in the Nether will be created when you enter. Then make portal B in the real world, don't enter, go to the nether through A, make portal B in the corresponding location, using coordinates or counting steps and taking into account distances in the nether are 8 times shorter. Now the B portals should be linked and the A portals should be linked.

@wulfyhuntar86 actually it isnt just 20blocks its done by chunks in the normal world, if there are 2 portals in the same chunk they will always go to the first portal you built. so you dont have to go too far in the nether but in the normal world it would be a little over 20

You happened to put tour portals realy close together in the nether; vertical distance doesn't matter, ony horizontal distance. That's why you got 2 portals to the same overworld portal

There probably isn't enough space below your house for a portal to be placed. so it tries to find the nearest spot. but the nearest spot is too close to your original portal so thats where you go.

@ MinecraftChick As far as I'm concerned, when building a portal in the Nether while using a portal you built to travel TO the Nether itself, adding more portals will take you back to your first portal or any other random location.
