What's not to understand? If a planet decides to declare independence from the Imperium, it's a lot cheaper and a lot faster to simply put down this uprising by killing the ones that are in charge and/or responsible and then taking the planet back over with minimal effort. Same applies to Ork Waaaghs, kill the warboss and chances are the Waaagh will fall apart and the orks start fighting amongst themselves again. 1 bullet is all it takes to stop a war before it begins.

@irfriske Assassin are, statwise, just as strong and tough as space marines. They only lack the armour, but most have armour ignoring or will get to shoot many times before the space marines reach them, or hide in the space marines squad and pop out killing a couple of them.

My comment is based on the tabletop game, where an assassin is more then a hundred points worth and the SM is about 16pts. All the different assassins could kill him without trouble... @BaldurandVali Still fluff like novels only pits a space marine against an assassin because the assassin in theory is the better fighter/killer. That makes the story and combat more interesting. Wouldn't be a lot of fun if it was a space marine chapter master hunting down a normal guardsman, that would just be silly. Then the author would have to give the guardsman something making him a worthy foe, such as daemonic powers, the space marine not knowing who he is hunting or something like that
@Azirtiro In theory. But also it depends on the individual. Some assassins are less skilled than or more skilled than others, regardless of experiance. Same goes for Astartes. Talos used his abilities to the fullest as did M'Shen, but Talos came out on top.

The assassins are far beyond that but from time to time yes, a space marine would have the upper hand and kill the assassin but in most fights, close or ranged, the assassin would win and therefore the assassin will win the "1 space marine vs. 1 assassin" because they win most of the time (when they aren't the antagonist in a epic novel) Is this M'shen an imperial assassin?

Basically it's nanotech armour which gives them super strength and reflexes. By original assassins I mean back when there were no specific types, so they could have whatever weapons they wanted. What annoys me is that there are two assassin types we never get to use in battles...

1. Venenum (Poison assassin)
2. Vanus. (Uses information to kill the target, for example by making them look like a traitor to their own allies.)
3. Tech priest assassin. (Has rather awesome weapons such as bullets that warp through void shields. One of these showed up in one of the Horus Heresy books)

@eyeaboveall Exactly what I was wondering, especially since the original Assassin did NOT have a specific temple. It was just a super soldier, with unbelievably, ridiculously high stats. The original assassin would make a Primach piss himself on sight. They had a 4+ dodge save from literally anything (maybe not Vortex grenades), and could have ANY WARGEAR THEY WANTED (From the Imperial Agents wargear list). This would include needlers.

I found out the other day that there're no more metal models being produced and my cousin gave me his stuff that he had back in 1991, I actually have a Vindicare or pre-vindicare assassin metal model! with a lot of other metal models that'll never see the gaming table again until I revive them for combat Hell I have the first new dark archon from this christmas in metal!

@DGneoseeker1 I asked the guy at gamesworkshop and the guy told me and my dad that they had switched to resin and not the easily breakable kind, the reason was "the price of tin went up". that annoyed me because the metal models were perfect for Line of Sight arguements when playing with non weighted models, (IE a groove in the scuplted terrain) so dad came with this neat idea, for every plastic model go out to lowe's buy a shitload of metal washer-rings and epoxy them to the undersides. Works!

@Musikkingofthecookie Oh okay. All of my knowledge of the Assassin Clades is based on Nemesis, so either they never mentioned it, or I couldn't remember. It's strange though, for some reason I picture Koyne in Nemesis as more of a masculine figure.

Assassins Specialize in what.. Killing
Space marines Specialize in Warfare.
Also let us note that a assassin knows more ways to kill a space marine after all they are specialized were as a Space marine is more blunt and less elegant.

geez the people fighting over who would win, that doesnt matter, they work for the same side, what you should be worrying about is chaos and the xenos, i believe that assassins and space marines work well together, guard and space marine push the front line and of the cities and planets that arise from behind them the assassins take out the heretics and unbelievers

@irfriske Assassin are, statwise, just as strong and tough as space marines. They only lack the armour, but most have armour ignoring or will get to shoot many times before the space marines reach them, or hide in the space marines squad and pop out killing a couple of them.

My comment is based on the tabletop game, where an assassin is more then a hundred points worth and the SM is about 16pts. All the different assassins could kill him without trouble... SM are awesome, just not THAT awesome

@BaldurandVali Still fluff like novels only pits a space marine against an assassin because the assassin in theory is the better fighter/killer. That makes the story and combat more interesting. Wouldn't be a lot of fun if it was a space marine chapter master hunting down a normal guardsman, that would just be silly. Then the author would have to give the guardsman something making him a worthy foe, such as daemonic powers, the space marine not knowing who he is hunting or something like that

@Azirtiro In theory. But also it depends on the individual. Some assassins are less skilled than or more skilled than others, regardless of experiance. Same goes for Astartes. Talos used his abilities to the fullest as did M'Shen, but Talos came out on top.

@BaldurandVali To some extent, but space marines are 1 out of a 1000 from the toughest planets at their chapters disposal. The assassins are far beyond that but from time to time yes, a space marine would have the upper hand and kill the assassin but in most fights, close or ranged, the assassin would win and therefore the assassin will win the "1 space marine vs. 1 assassin" because they win most of the time (when they aren't the antagonist in a epic novel) Is this M'shen an imperial assassin?

Conceptwise, both share tropes which can be traced by to Starship Troopers ( the novel ).
SC has direct references to Aliens ( some of the unit responses, and building designs. )
WH40k has direct refs to Dune ( lasguns, Navigators etc )
not direct link between SC & WH40k.

@TheTheKingOfTheSword Not suprising really, considering that's basically what "Synskin" is. I think that's the right name. The original assassins ALL had it, and I think they still do. Basically it's nanotech armour which gives them super strength and reflexes. By original assassins I mean back when there were no specific types, so they could have whatever weapons they wanted. What annoys me is that there are two assassin types we never get to use in battles...

1. Venenum (Poison assassin)
2. Vanus. (Uses information to kill the target, for example by making them look like a traitor to their own allies.)
3. Tech priest assassin. (Has rather awesome weapons such as bullets that warp through void shields. One of these showed up in one of the Horus Heresy books)

@eyeaboveall Exactly what I was wondering, especially since the original Assassin did NOT have a specific temple. It was just a super soldier, with unbelievably, ridiculously high stats. The original assassin would make a Primach piss himself on sight. They had a 4+ dodge save from literally anything (maybe not Vortex grenades), and could have ANY WARGEAR THEY WANTED (From the Imperial Agents wargear list). This would include needlers.

I found out the other day that there're no more metal models being produced and my cousin gave me his stuff that he had back in 1991, I actually have a Vindicare or pre-vindicare assassin metal model! with a lot of other metal models that'll never see the gaming table again until I revive them for combat Hell I have the first new dark archon from this christmas in metal!

@DGneoseeker1 I asked the guy at gamesworkshop and the guy told me and my dad that they had switched to resin and not the easily breakable kind, the reason was "the price of tin went up". that annoyed me because the metal models were perfect for Line of Sight arguements when playing with non weighted models, (IE a groove in the scuplted terrain) so dad came with this neat idea, for every plastic model go out to lowe's buy a shitload of metal washer-rings and epoxy them to the undersides. Works!
