Last time I checked there were an awful lot of black people at LSU- in the student body, on the football team, and in the band.
HBCU Bands are very entertaining, but they aren't on the same planet as LSU. LSU has one of the finest schools of music anywhere and a tradition that few bands in the country can rival.
Of course, I prefer the Auburn band ;-) and in my biased opinion think it's the best in the deep south, but these guys certainly make an equally strong claim to that title.
@mpmcd81 ASU and Southern are in a different universe then cuz y'all suck like a high skool band and if y'all do have one of the finest skools of music y'all should take the initiative and actually show it because what I see are a bunch of HBCU wannabe's! And if y'all so good then why r y'all taking HBCU music? Think about that!
@BOBEAUX5 Damn straight LSU and SU are in a different universe. LSU lives in a universe where pitch, rhythmic precision, and beautiful tone carry the day. SU lives in a universe where none of those things matter, the faculty fail at teaching them, and the students fail at learning them.
LSU has no desire to be an HBCU. They can play whatever the heck they want to play in any style they would like, as can the rest of the top tier SEC bands.
The last time I checked, "music was a universal language". The bands have different styles, but one should appreciate these young musicians' talents be it an H.B.C.U. band or a "traditional" band from the S.E.C. or any other conference.
There is nothing wrong with it! However, I see no diversity in that band. And now your concerned about the Negros? You weren't that concerned during the JENA 6. But your all of a sudden concerned about the diversity at LSU. Well umm that's funny looks like once again it has been proven that BLACK is beautiful because every cultrue is striving to be exactly like it. Dueces SKEE WEE sorors.
What are you, high? What does ANYTHING you just said have to do with what we are talking about? I said the university was diverse, which it is. You see what you want to see, I guess. Point is we're just having fun and playing music here and they have some folks that act like thats commiting a crime. Thanks for assuming that you know someone elses beliefs or values.
BBoud is right. It has nothing to do with black people, Jesse Jackson Jr. What are you a black activist? I'm offened by the term "negores" and wish you didn't use it. Black isn't beautiful, it's just black. The end. HBCU sucks beyond reason and shouldn't be compared to a university such as LSU's standard. It's apples and oranges. HBCU's excel at playing like shit. We excel at playing "MUSIC" or so it's called. I know you wouldn't know it if you heard it.
actually black is beautiful....and white is just white...a slate. and there are hbcu that can hang with lsu...and if lsu is so high why resort to hbcu music...cuz they sound terrible playing this...and u dont know how racist u sounded saying that. and FAMU plays music...this, this right here is SHIT, PURE SHIT its not even music
@effinjackrabbits U r a racist, clueless, bastard! Black is Beautiful! LSU is one of the worst bands in the SEC so u know it cant compete with the HBCU's at all! @BOBEAUX5 So because you think someone else is being racist, means you can be too? Calling someone musically challenged on the count of them being a particular race is ignorant as all hell. I would tell you to grow up, but then again you're only in the 8th grade and haven't had any real life experiences yet.
Thats a closed minded thing to say. And please don't go on a rant about how we must be stealing the culture by playing this song. Truth is, we are a diverse university so whats wrong with the band playing a little something for everyone?
bboud29 - First, you need to research the sports you are referring to- to understand the true origins. Secondly, you really are in denial about racism in America. It's documented about the atrocities of whites in this country toward Native Americans, Latinos, Iraqis and the list goes on. You should watch Eyes on the Prize. My comments are factual and the truth, so I guess you're hurt - BOO WHOO. Again, Southern University wrote this version of Neck. It is a Black College tradition.
You're a joke. I never denied that white culture in the past was without its faults. But why do you focus on all the negatives? Do you have so much hate in your heart towards white people? If so, I recomend you get some therapy. Again, Southern University wrote the version of neck that they play, but not the version LSU plays. No one is arguing with you that Neck isn't a black college tradition. However, it seems that you're the only one who is making such a pointless debate about it.
"Talking out the Side of your Neck" is the Black experience. LSU playing it is a slap in our face. I have spoken with Southern alums; they feel offended, as do other graduates of Black Colleges. Because of racism, music has been the only salvation to express ourselves without retribution from Whites. This is also our connection with Africa - our homeland. So the music is rooted in Africa not America. Respecting other cultures is really important to begin to change racism.
As we have a black fraternities, black football players, black students, black band members, and several other "black experiences" what robs us the right to play that song?
oh and BTW....
talk out (the side of) ones neck
v. phr. to give an uninformed opinion; to fabulate; to talk unwisely or unguardedly; to blow smoke (out ones ass). Also talk through (the side of) ones neck.
cut the bullshit. how is it a slap in the face for LSU to play this. your the only one being racist. it wasnt ok back in the old days for white people to be racist and its not ok for black people to start. and how is it not ok for a "mixed" (not white) college to play a black colleges song. maybe we like it. and if your making such a big deal about this, then black people shouldnt be allowed to play basketball, football, baseball, or any other sport created by whites. get over it, its 2008.
brboi16--you need to learn some history. White folks did not event sports. Sports have been played by people around the world. Secondly, you need to respect other cultures otherwise you're a racist; that's why white America is hated around the world - You do not respect other races, religions, traditions, etc. You take everything through stealing or wars like Iraq. The chickens will come home to roost. Southern is the truth; I did not go there, but I know there.
He didn't say white people evented the concept of sports. The point he was stating was that no one bitches about blacks playing sports that white americans made popular (baseball, basketball, football.)
Its real funny hearing you call someone else a racist with some of the comments that you've made. You haven't looked in a mirror lately have you, BPrideful.
@steveaux03 U lie! SU would blow LSU out the water what is wrong with u? Plus I'm not ignorant you're just stupid! And I comment on whatever I want to!
@BOBEAUX5 You're in 8th grade? wow. That's probably why you haven't noticed. Go to a good quality school, and get a good education. Then you'll see good quality
@steveaux03 Hey steveaux03- LSU would not be embarrassed by any band in the country. That includes the likes of Michigan and Ohio State. They're definitely one of the nation's elite band programs.
@BOBEAUX5 Look, fella, how many orchestral brass players does SU have to its credit? How many university band directors? I wouldn't be spouting a lot of crap with that track record if I were you.
LSU is one of the best bands in the United States, and at or near the top of the SEC. (That's coming from an Auburn alum being quite objective) Anyone can play with the harsh and irritating sound like SU, but to play in tune, in time, and with a good characteristic sound like LSU is not easy.
@mpmcd81 HAHA u like Auburn! ROLL TIDE all the way! Oh and do you know how should I know! I'm in eighth grade and I live in Birmingham and I dont know any SU alumni. I just recognize good talent when I see it and that is what SU has and LSU lacks! SU would blow Lsu out the water!
@BOBEAUX5 I don't just like Auburn, I graduated from Auburn. I got a fine engineering and musical education there. I don't happen to like LSU's football team too well, but their band is a fine organization, and the school of music at LSU is a force to be reckoned with. They have produced as many college band directors as any school I can think of. You've just made a very ignorant statement on the basis of LSU playing a historically HBCU chart but with higher standards of tone and intonation.
I just hope this friendly discussion brings back some of the funk. There are no funk bands out there now to carry on the funk. I'm amazed that that this great funk song is making everybody stand up and notice what the funk was all about in the 70's and 80's
This sounds better than Southern's. I just finished watching about 6 different clips of Southern's neck and their neck sounds really distorted and tune out of place at time... LSU doesn't it better and cleaner...
You have got to be joking. LSU do not want it there Band director admitted that at the parade of champions in 2003. LSU smuggles championships from the BCS. We blowout Bands. Stick with what you know. In other words dance with the one who brung you.
smuggles championships? what happened to peace and love? just because something is better doesnt mean you have to try to bring it down. because if you really thought southerns is better then you wouldnt bother watching lsu and posting dumb comments
I think if LSU fans enjoy the band playing this song they should play the song!!! A band is about adding excitment and a change of pace to a sporting event(football, basketball, baseball, etc.)GL to all LSU sports and GO GREEN GO GOLD!!!
STOP IT!!!! This is horrific. Sounds terrible. This song is a Black thing. Not meant for white folks. STOP STEALING!!! You are not Southern, Grambling, Howard, Fam, BCC, Shaw... Get your own!!!!
music has no color barrier. If thats the case y do black schools marches. Quit eing racist. And yes, im black and i march in a traditional style band. p.s. this arrangement is great just like southern or bama state or anybody else
It may not have color but it does have style and that song should never be played like that ever again I thought someone was playingit while they were drunk. It was that slow with no finese.
stop stealing? so when the blacks started playing the white sports that wasnt meant for black folks was that stealing? they were copying the white people. your name says bprideful so have pride in your own stuff just like we do in our own stuff. not everything is gonna be made the way you like it. the world would be boring if everything was the same.
If you had won the chapionship and had to share it with us, you would be pissed too. USC is a good little school, but they are not in the SEC. It is hard to hear the media constantly saying dumb shit. And thanks for the props.
WOW....PErsonally I think it is awsome how core style bands are trying something new. I wish my school would play some cool songs like this( I attend UCA by the way GO BEARS!!!!). I think all this stuff about ya'll stole it from them and other stupid shit like that needs to stop. Can we all grow up and just appreciate a song that a band plays, and congragulate a band program for trying to mix it up.
hey to all you fkrs hating on LSU because its a "black" school song what would you say if we were playing some hardcore country? you would all call us racist....but no.. instead you call us thieves.. im tired of this stupid shit man.... I think all you "BLACK" schools are hating on us salt and peppa Tigers.... black and white..pfft.. PURPLE AND GOLD BITCHES !
Well if everyone wants to be politically correct, then No it's not a "black" song. But it is a song that has been traditionally played by HBCUs (to specifically name the 'tons of schools' that ftn388 is referring to) across the nation. LSU sounds ok...but it's not all that compared to the "tons of schools" who have been ORIGINALLY playing the song.
the song was "arranged" by Cameo...but I'm referring to the BANDs that play the song..Name a college band that originates ALL of the songs they play..Don't come at me wit this technical bull shit...you know good and damn well that LSU fans wouldn't even appreciate that song if it hadn't been made popular FIRST by Grambling and Southern. Go sit down wit this technical shit and be real Eyeshield 26.
Of course HBCU's played the song first. But high school bands are playing this shit now, so why dis LSU for adding it to it's song list? Grambling and Southern (and plenty other HBCUs) are great bands, but everybody was influenced by Cameo. That's all I'm saying.
this song isnt a "black" school song its a real song, so bitching ok, tons of schools play that song along with a lot of other songs, stop fuckin whining its a damn song
I'm from Baton Rouge, my parents went to Southern....and I think this is AWESOME!!!! Whenever LSU is on tv or I'm at Tiger Stadium, this always gets the people hyped and geeked up.
And to those hating on LSU, I'm Black and graduated from a Black College....and I LOVE their rendition. It's not a "BLACK" song. It's CAMEO's song.
Got to represent Grambling on here. We've been playing Neck just as long if not longer than Southern. Now I wouldn't be surprise if the Idea came from your neighbors in Scottlanville (LOL) but lets not for get the other pioneering HBCU's like FAMU who also have had this in there repertoire since the 80's. Now with that being said there's nothing wrong with NON-HBCU school such as LSU to play especially when it's great arrangement.
To those hatin' on LSU for playin' it...it doesn't matter who played it first. I acutally see it as flattery to the Jags, which is probably where they got it from. I went to JSU home of the Sonic Boom of the South and sorry, but Tennessee State, your band sucks. :-) LSU do your thang.
Sounds like someone is a little pissed that they're not in a band that gets to perform in front of 92,000 plus fans, on national tv might I add, who support and appreciate what they do...
Please, a-hole. TSU has performed in front of just as many people, for pro games, for presidential inaugural parades, and other events all around the world. Lsu, you, and your comments are insignificant.
Are we really having a conversation about TSU? What presidential inauguration are you referring to? LSU plays in front of 92,000 plus annually, not just at the empty ass classics TSU plays in front of.

I think all this stuff about ya'll stole it from them and other stupid shit like that needs to stop. Can we all grow up and just appreciate a song that a band plays, and congragulate a band program for trying to mix it up.

How can you say a school ORIGINALLY played a song when it was arranged from a Cameo song?
Isn't HIS version the original?
Eyeshield26 4 years ago
the song was "arranged" by Cameo...but I'm referring to the BANDs that play the song..Name a college band that originates ALL of the songs they play..Don't come at me wit this technical bull shit...you know good and damn well that LSU fans wouldn't even appreciate that song if it hadn't been made popular FIRST by Grambling and Southern.

:-) LSU do your thang.
marleymarl01 4 years ago
Tennessee State played it first. Lsu is SQUARE! They SUCK! Stick to John Phillip Sousa. JUDE!

Sounds like someone is a little pissed that they're not in a band that gets to perform in front of 92,000 plus fans, on national tv might I add, who support and appreciate what they do...
bboud29 4 years ago
Please, a-hole. TSU has performed in front of just as many people, for pro games, for presidential inaugural parades, and other events all around the world. Lsu, you, and your comments are insignificant.
brjude729 4 years ago
Are we really having a conversation about TSU? What presidential inauguration are you referring to? LSU plays in front of 92,000 plus annually, not just at the empty ass classics TSU plays in front of.

To bad Tennesse won't be in New Orleans on January 7th. Maybe over the break your band can learn a something other the Rocky Top.
