Very nice tribute! I emailed Mr. Chapman a few years ago, to tell him what I'm sure he's heard thousands of times from fans of the movie. I too, was pleasantly surprised when he emailed me back; IN ALL CAPS - as older folks are wont to do ;) I got the impression from his reply that he was pretty rare; one of the last remnants of a Hollywood past.
I never got meet ben, wish I would have, I grew up with my grand-parents, so I got to see all the classic stuff, now 31, My 3 top all time monsters, (movies) Creature from the black lagoon, Frankenstein, and Phantom of the opera) I just love the Gill man, I even have gill man tattoo. this was a very nice piece, on both Ben, and the monster he made more human. thank you,
Thank you for letting me know so much more of a special man he was,and how heroic Mr.Chapman was as a man and to our country! He reached across the country to me!I called my brother like we were kids again.Hey,guess who emailed "me"! I am sadden, but so grateful! You're lucky to have known him, thanks for sharing!
Mr.Chapman was very kind,I found his website after a viewing one night.I emailed him to tell him how much as kids we loved being scared by the "Gillman"!To my surprise,he emailed me back.He said he had broken his hip and was at home in Hawaii! God Bless him!The words here "are true".He made me feel important!Take care!
man im 17 and when i first saw this movie when i was little i loved it! to me the gillman was the greatest of the "big 5" as me and my friends call them. i only wish i could have met this great man before he passed on
My Dad took me to Creature from the Black Lagoon, it was one key element on my career choice and my love of drawing and building Monsters. MY favorite Monster also! ...
Thank you for that tribute, A major part of my childhood is now gone. In the 60s and 70s I was obsessed with the Gillman. A few years ago my wife (knowing I loved him) sent away for an autographed photo for my birthday. When Ben found out we had the same birthday he E-mailed my wife and got our phone number and called me and wished me a happy birthday. This was unreal!!! I was blown away. I shed a tear then and now. Not for sorrow, But for the joy he gave to me. A class act. He will be missed.
R.I.P. Ben, we will miss you...
