I have to admit being curious on one thing. Why American Sign Language is priceless. In a multicultural, multinational world, surely the international sign language would be what is truly priceless. I admit freely I'm ignorant of both, and clearly the author of this piece disagrees with my simplistic guess and probably has a lot better reason for their opinion than I do for mine. Please, could someone take pity and educate me on why ASL specifically is as important as it is?
Yes this is a multicultural/multinational world, and each culture and nation has at least one national language. I am unaware of any international sign language...or international audial language. ASL is the natural language of the Deaf community and enables the deaf to communicate easily and completely within their culture. From there, going on to learn additional languages such as English is much easier. This video demonstrates the cost (and frustration) of trying to make the Deaf hearing.
Nice video! ASL might be a bit easier to learn than other second languages, but I think it is still difficult. A lot of people go around performing the one sign they know and think they are awesome lol. I am not deaf, nor do I know ASL, but I learned a little bit. So many deaf people come into the store I work at that it comes in handy to know "Have a nice day" and things like that.
One saturday I was channel surfing because there was NOTHING worth watching on my 200Dish channels. I came across a program teaching finger spelling. I was intrigued and kept watching. At the end of the program (30 minutes) I knew ALL of the letters. It is VERY EASY to learn. This knowledge has already come in handy. I feel that finger spelling (at the very least) should be a REQUIREMENT in our schools! It would even be useful in high noise enviroment.
i suppose so...except for that although now you may know finger-spelling, you DEFINITELY do not know ASL or the language. It is the equivalent of learning our 26 familiar letters and simply saying H, E, L, L, O, H, O, W, A, R, E, Y, O, U. I would also be interested to learn as to when this has come in handy, not that I doubt it would. If you feel so empowered to bring Deafness to our schools, you can start, too! (Notice the capital, indicating Deaf not deaf)
This is a difficult topic to debate. For a deaf or mute person, it's a means of communication so that is priceless.
However, ASL isn't well known. I taught myself ASL through middle & high school and I know passingly.. I worked at a retail store and there was a deaf guy with his son who were shopping around. They had a difficult time because nobody could communicate with them.
So yes, ASL is positive to have; but more people need to know it. Otherwise we are just segregating ourselves..
lol. heck yes. this video was pretty cool. people think that being Deaf is nothing. they think you can just go out and buy a hearing aid, or even get cochlear implants done. its simply not that easy. Sign Language is kick ass. everyone should learn it.
Typical dumb ass american. Try for once to walk a mile in any person's shoes. The video is awesome, the only stupid thing about this page is your comment and any other like it. Sympathise with people for GOD'S SAKE.
I agree, the past post was ignorant. But you lost all integrity yourself by generalizing all Americans. You are just as ignorant as he is. Btw, I am not American, I am German.
AGREED! :)

I'm HoH, new to ASL, but I see no debate, ASL is first language for many, learning it can only be an advantage, hearing or not.
So I agree, more need to know it, and more are trying to learn, it was difficult to get into ASL class, so many want to learn.
Even after 1 term ASL, I am communicating easier with Deaf/HoH, it's wonderful.
