It is a clicker. It is used as a bridge signal to tell the animal "Yes, that was correct". Many animals learn faster with it because with the clicker you can pin point the exact behavior you want. You can click right as they are doing the trick correctly and then give them a treat as a reward. It can also be used to train dogs, horses and marine animals.

When I told my mom she said oh no they never cover their pee only their poop. I said oh well now one of them does. LOL
