.....these were the good ole' days......DAD,(R.I.P) would play these jams when we were kids an it sounded good @ 11yrs old...thank u Daddy 4 giving me life an ears 4 good music...
Every note on this song was played by human hands. No stupid sampling ripoffs of other people's talents. No autotune pitch correction. Analog recording. I used to love to listen to this album on my big ole macintosh powered stereo. hell yeah I'm old as dirt!!
@pretorious700 and u are absolutely correct, I have been a fan of this group for years. We arent old just wise, and we have good taste in music. From one old person to another..lol!
I played this song over and over again when it came out. I don't know why but I related to it somehow. Chaka was also my sister's favorite female singer. She had all of her albums and were about the same age. My sister died this year. But I learned a lot about music and becoming a woman from her. I think of her whenever I think of Chaka.
Still get chills and a lump in the throat when I hear this song. Want to know how the sisters were in the 70's Check out the movies from that time. They were pretty close. "Foxy Brown" wasn't just a name. Great post.
i am very unhappy that this drop dead wonderful song gets to no airplay on r and stations ...... it is super feeling and expressive and real....my god i love this song
@csp1csp1 i just want to share with you, here in Dallas, Tx that song got much play when it came out. I was younger but I do remember it being played because I have 2 older sisters and they were on top of all the new and popular music.
one of best female voices ever. i'm sorry but beyonce and mary just can't compare. back in the day when you heard aretha, chaka , gladys, natalie, dionne, and neicy williams your ear could distinguish. today's female vocalist all sound alike. oh yeah i forgot to mention jennifer holiday and stefanie mills. what happened with this generation? did people forget how to sing?
Everytime I play Smokin Room its just natural to play this one AND I CRY! Thanks CHAKA for the memories that will carry us for a LIFETIME! BLESSINGS ON YA HOUSE!

This is one of my all time favorite songs! I don't even have a specific memory concerning this song back then, but I almost can't listen to this song because it moves me so much about the time back then! When Chacka says, " I'm all into spirit" she binds so many of her fans together! Also thank you for the info on Chaka's vocal background and arrangements. I so needed to confirm her added genius!
MAGNIFICENT SONG & WELL EXECUTED BY RIFUS & CHAKA. THEY WERE THE BEST GROUP EVER, IN MY OPINION!!! THEY HAD ONE HIT AFTER ANOTHER. THEY DID IT & DID WELL.
Less favourable review????? Obviously an expert. This is Chaka at her best.. It is so hard to say what her best is tough.. Rufus years were magic, so were so many solo albums up to 'FUNK THIS'!! He can suck doodle. Doesn't know what the fuck he is on about..... This is timeless!! My love goes out there for people into real music. Rare these days....
listening to this, takes me back to when i had not a care in the world and talking to girls on the phone with this in the background on my 8-track phonograph! HAH!
Check out the vocals on this song. Back then, NO ONE and I mean NO ONE was doing their own background vocals and background arrangements. Aretha wasn't doing it. Gladys wasn't. Chaka was the first. She knew the sound she wanted so she recorded every vocal part and arranged it herself - no producer arrangement of her vocals ever. Producers arranged the music , the song, but not her vocal parts. Love it.
@chakafan2 Actually, if you listen to the work of Joni Mitchell and especially Laura Nyro, both these women were doing their own background vocals and vocal arrangements for years before this. In fact, Laura was there before Joni. Check out her 'Eli And The Thirteenth Confession album from'68. Before Laura, it might be Peggy Lee. Still, a great Chaka recording, of course.
In Detroit thinking about renting a hall and throwing a dayz of wayback jam with old school classics like this with some zapp/roger, tom browne,whodini,heatwave,ojays,tempts,cameo,etc,etc......you get the point.....think it would go over well?
I think Chaka crossed lines and was more than soul. That is why she's not thought of as the queen of soul. Plus, in her era, there were so MANY good black female singers. I mean, Diana Ross, and Aretha were both still hot then.
Posts like this "remind me" of how irritated I am that utube doesn't have a repeat feature that allows u2 replay a post over &over &over-- &over-- &over again on its own. (clicking "replay" at the end--AGAIN)
@candelise Yes, it might depending on the passion of those reading your comments. I can say as the one guilty of placing this album on YouTube that I don't understand the comparison. I'm, also, not sure I understand the concept of successor. Both are magnificent soul singers, but totally different styles who's career high-points were approximately a decade apart. That's about all there is to compare or consider. The rest is just a matter of talent, preference and entertainment.
@candelise Ah yes, the queen of soul thing. I understand. I've always seen that as a media frenzy notation that won't change or be passed onto another.
@xfunkster: I absolutely adore both Re-Re and Chaka. Words or actions can't express how much I love and respect these women and the both bring something different to the table. I can't even think of comparing the two, they are both incomperable.
I do know that Chaka has not received anywhere near the accolades that are due to both her and Rufus. Chaka has influenced countless people from the 70's to present.
@xfunkster I TOTALLY agree with you xfunkster.....there is no comparison. I don't get what it is with people why they have to start chitt and compare artists. Every artist is unique in their own way, just doing their thing, trying to succeed in the business, not really competing with other artists but people are always comparing. Every artist have their own unique style, and are all good in their own right. Stop the comparison people!! You either like them or you don't!!
@xfunkster I agree with you . There's no need to compare two great artists, just appreciate each for what they bring to the stage....talent.
I believe it’s an Aries thing, which they both are. I’m an Aries also and on some nights when I sing I sound like Chaka and on other nights I sound like Aretha.......in my dreams of course, but still : )
@xfunkster I disagree, there is a big comparison between the two!!! Chaka was called "Little Aretha" @ 11y/o because she mimicked her so well but she incorporated many other singers styles into her vocals which eventually shaped & formed her inimitable & very recognizable style!!! You can hear Aretha in this song as well as Janis Joplin!!! The thing about Chaka is-Who ever she's feeling @ the time-You'll hear them in her work-It's like an ode!!!
@xfunkster This is my critique on the matter BELL BOTTOM PANTS,CRUISNG DOWN HIGHLAND, THICK LEATHER BELTS,BAGS FROM TIJUANA,TUBE TOPS.ANGEL FLIGHTS,PLATFORM SHOES AND WE FLAT TUMMYS THEN NO MUFFIN TOPS!
@candelise P P M is what made me a true Chakaholic though!!! If you heard Brenda & Bryan's original it would really make you apprectiate her genius & artistry!!! I've been in her presence several times but it's funny,we only talked about music once & that was about her gpspel album we have yet to hear!!! Lol!!!
@candelise I think those tracks were on Rufus' 1st release when Chaka was 19 "Satisfied" & the" Rags to Rufus" cut "Ain't Nothing But A Maybe"!!! By the time "Please Pardon Me" was released it was a wrap-Little Aretha was on par with Big Aretha!!!
@candelise Are we talkin 8 tracks? Got Rags to Rufus from my big brother on my 8th b-day still can't get enough of her today joking- about the 8 tracks my kids dont know what an LP is
@candelise No row (argument) from me. Chaka is definitely next in line after Aretha. No Question. Here's the lineage (at the risk of starting a "row" myself) and we're talking strictly Rhythm and Blues (R&B) Icons in terms of their status with Black American record buyers from early 20th century thru today... Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Dinah Washington, Aretha, Chaka, Mary J. Blidge
@Modacolorist This is culture. It's a part of the things that make our life rich with blessings. Those moments in your life can never be taken from you and with music like this serving as the soundtrack it's so sweet.

I hope you don't mind but I miss this kind of music. Please stop selling out. Try singing from your soul like this classy, jazzy artist did, and still does. I think they should take classes from Chaka, Aretha and Gladys before they are allowed to record and call it R & B, Soul or maybe they should keep their mouths closed. CHAKA KAHN 4-EVER
A very lovely song by Chaka, I can relate to this song because I had lost a friend sometime ago and I ran across this lady who looked so much like her, it brought tears to my eyes.
@irisferguson Thanks so much for your comment. My friend is in a better place now and I take comfort in that though I do miss her smile and company very much.
I saw her at a free concert in philly and I screamed out I love you she said something about a song she was about to sing I think it was called will you love me and I screamed out, "over and over!"
Man, I've been looking for this song, I haven't heard this in years. Thank you SO MUCH for posting, don't hear wonderful music like this anymore. ☆☆☆☆☆
Me too, mitch, expecially this song. I remember having to get up over & over to go to the "hi-fi" & place the needle in the right groove so I didn't get the last part of the song before it...LOL! Played this one over & over & over & over, just like I'm about to do right now...;-)
I am a life-long Chaka Khan Chicago fan! We adore and love you Chaka!! Please come back home to Chi-town and see us soon. We love you so much. She is one of the few greats that can still hit all those great notes like back in the day. This song is timeless and a great jam. We love you!!! Now, this is quality music when 35 years later, it still is just as funky, soul-stirring, moving and as great as it was when it first came out in the 70's!
Ohhhhh. This amazing tune sounds as fresh and passionate as it did when I heard it in the early 1970s. (That's right, kids, I am still alive, and I do not need hearing aids. Dig it!)
Thanks. I'm glad to know you were right along with me in spirit back in them days enjoying this great music. I'm glad to bring it around to you one more time.

A very lovely song by Chaka, I can relate to this song because I had lost a friend sometime ago and I ran across this lady who looked so much like her, it brought tears to my eyes.

@irisferguson Thanks so much for your comment. My friend is in a better place now and I take comfort in that though I do miss her smile and company very much.

in my opinion, this is the best cut on the album. through her singing she really tells a story. paints a picture. what a great talent.

Dig it!)
