I actually attended this race with my parents, we sat in Shoreline Drive's outer grandstand just across from the exit from pitlane, Mario Andretti dominates once again for his 4th overall win at Long Beach! 8-)
Bobby Rahal was underrated, even with his many Indycar titles. He had an excellent racing brain. I cannot stand Jackie Stewart in this video lol. His voice is so annoying.
Watching this video & others like the 93 Surfers race, IndyCar was truly WORLD-CLASS racing. Heck even 3 time F1 champion Stewart was color commentator. Then it all fell apart in 96 and since then no reigning, past or future F1 champion has bothered racing here. Today Tony George is now nothing but a car owner and IndyCar is a shell of what it was. It will take a long time to get back to where we were "pre split". What a sad sad joke!!
1996-2001 CART still was great series (if not being exclusively Indy500 fan), but what happened later - that`s even "sadder" joke - inferior IRL took over :(
@dinohiro1 I think CART was still great till 2001. Even without Indy 500. But then Penske (or his sponsor`s) decision to go to IRL, that`s paradox I can`t understand.
The high level of competition, the crowds, everything. The EARL is starting from the bottom up. No comparison. Wake me when they get excititng again. I'll take my money to ALMS.
That's boring. CART/Champcars looked better, had far, far better performance and sounded better. I won't go to a IRL race until they are at CART specs again.
though I feel everyone is entitled to their own opinion, with all due respect, I would have to disagree. and I think most fans would also disagree. if CART was so much better, then why did the IRL win out? I will meet you half way, though. I think that '80's-era CART was better than the 2000-era CART...
That's got nothing to do with the quality of the product. TG might have won, but at a scorched earth policy. Open wheel is in a terrible state. He was stupid to listen to Bill France who encouraged him to do this. Why? Because it divided "the house" and NASCAR benefited. I've seen these so called Indy Cars. Their performance is a joke. They couldn't best the pole time of LMP 2s at Mid Ohio and those cars carry about 100-200 more lbs and 50-100 less horsepower.
when you say quality of product, do you mean the cars or the competition? if you mean cars, again, I will agree with you. but, if you mean quality/level of the competiton, the level of competition Id say is higher right now than its been since the early '90's, and I think TV ratings from the past couple years will back that up...
I agree Mr. Mayer... If the CART teams had nothing to offer, then why a merger? Given the current fan base and revenue, I hope it isn't too late. Funny how quick TG's objectives turned on him and it makes me so glad to see Roger Penske at #1 and #2 for the Indy starting grid.
with Gannasi right behind. Now that's fair racing. Also, EARL loyalists made fun of Champ Car's ratings? Hey, how are those ratings on Versus? The channel that no one has...wait to go yet again Toneeee.....dumb ass...

Remember the CART series in this era paid alot of money for an event win.

God, if the IRL would've taken the Panoz/Cosworth cars, I'd might go.

@weallfollowmanutd Jackie Stewart, arguably the best racing brain EVER, not too shabby at commentating either :)

Ah, the Long Beach GP. . .80's Indycar style. . .Good times. . . :-)
Back when there were different chassis/engine combos. . .TURBOS X-D Manual shifting. . .A drivers true race car.
None of these homologated cars, all powered with Honda engines with weak power output. . .mated with a "Power to pass/overtake" button -_-

CART was and still is way more interesting than these days so-called Indy Cars. I've seen them and they are a friggin' bore.
