  • THE GIRL STANDING BY THE DRUMS SEEMS CUTE.

I WOULD KISS HER ON HER FACE.

  • Is the Soprano soloist Julianne Baird??

  • Imagine Lighting the Olympic Culdron to this music at London 2012!

  • getting goosebumps - hot dang!

  • This is so magnificent...just beautiful.

  • That amazing blast at 4:40 and the moments right after that never fail to make me teary-eyed.

  • increíble, sorprenent, majestuós...aixó és música..

  • powerful! There are no words!!!!

  • I was lucky enough to attend a performance Mahler's Eighth. I think I can say that it changed my life.

  • Greatest and most powerful symphonic finale ever written? I certainly would put it way up there, perhaps in the top three or so. I could scarcely disagree with the poster's description.

  • Is this the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra? Anything that Rattle touches turns to gold.

  • @padredemishijos12 Its the national youth orchestra of Great Britain. I was lucky enough to be there, even if I was so young I barely remember it! Think it may have sewed a subconscious seed that I picked up later in life when I saw it again at the proms a couple of years ago.

  • Did this and the "Veni, Creator Spritus" with NIU/Northwestern back in the day...is that a young people's orchestra? Fantastic Job Everyone!!!! Please tell who the performers are!

  • Mahler's 8th symphony - the biggest pomp in music history. ;-)

  • 至高なものの比喩として日常が「事実となる」。「成し遂げられたり」とは最終結論に至る倒置であり二行目とは切り離される。最終四行は雰囲気の塊ではない。中間行の同一化もバランスを完全に損なう。私の考えでは。

    `Das Ewig-Weibliche' .. 作曲者は10番で‘一人の女性’を必要とした。当然だ。

  • @ewigriet 追加。google和英翻訳は出鱈目。逆。

  • Absolutely fantastic !!! Very happy conducting, Sir Simon, congratulations. JAL, from Brazil

  • Sir Slackens is great as ever as Maestro. The music is great. Mahler and Richard Strauss are two of the greastest composers of french horn music parts in a symphony. The choir was awesome.

  • The audio on this recording is fucking astounding!!!

  • So....so.....so wonderful! Never get tired to listen to this heavenly made piece of music! Thanks for sharing----

  • The end.. amazing. Some strong stuff. Having tears in my eyes. So beautiful and so strong. Sorry Herr Mahler, but this a musical orgasm. I Cant say otherwise.

  • Beethoven would have died of envy

  • @Filimonjuk ... only if he could have heard it ;-)

  • @NYCBG he was lucky

  • @NYCBG He did hear it - this was the last of his symphonies that he got to hear. I believe that he may have even conducted it.

  • Musical cocaine.

  • It never fails to amaze me how Mahler's orchestrations are able to remain so transparent, regardless the size of the orchestra.

  • @gsmonks It's of course also the quality of the conductor and the orchestra which keeps it clear. This was a pretty good performance.

  • Não conhecia.

A vida está cheia de belas surpresas.

  • la sinfonia de los 1000

  • Fantastico!

  • My ears are bleeding with joy.

  • Sir Simon Rattle is a TRUE Mahlerite!

  • Agree ... perhaps the greatest and most powerful finale ever composed ... this music is for the ages

  • who is the conductor????

  • @wwalker79 It's Sir Simon Rattle.

  • <3 the roll on the bass drum and timpani (=

    3:18

  • Kyon kiss Haruhi now!

  • The soprano's "portato" at 2:02 is TERRIBLE.

  • @lupash I think trying to control the quiet dynamics is what messed her up. Not exactly the easiest thing to do.

  • @lupash Excuse my ignorance - what does that mean? I thought portato was a string thing?

  • For those who want to know what the orchestra is... it's the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. I only know because I recognised the logo on their ties xD

  • why being like a movie soundtrack it's a bad thing...? Not that Mahler is like a movie soundtrack, but still.

  • @FAVAmobile Because the purpose of a movie soundtrack piece is to fit into a movie and that's it. Mahler's symphonies aren't "like a movie soundtrack", because they're much much more than just background music.

  • @tdcmoo You realize that Mahler was around before movie soundtracks... it would make more sense to say that movie soundtracks sound like Mahler. Before you make such an ignorant statement, think about it first.

  • @tlcooper93 ahahha.....calm down, calm down....you don´t need to insult me because of that....i don´t think i've insulted you....it was only my way of saying that i don't like it that much....it sounds for me too superficial...the way I found to express that was comparing it to movie soundtracks...don't take it personal....relax dude, music should bring people together, and not serving as a point of fights or for insulting other people, who don't share your opinion....

  • @tdcmoo Then simply say you don't like it.... Again, think before you say something.

  • @tdcmoo you are really ignorant. please shut up!!!

  • @juanperc... and that was a very not-ignorant comment....use youtube to express opinions about music and videos, and not for insulting other people...

  • @tdcmoo ok so your comment was ignorant not you. i dont mean to insult you sorry.

  • 3:18 ... Bass Drum roll. Woah.

  • Bravíssimo Sir. Simon Ratlle. Hugs from Brazil.

  • wer ist der Regisseur ?? und die Orchester ?? Bitte !!! es war Superb !! muß unbedingt haben..

  • @dvichotex Der Regisseur ist Simon Rattle. Orchester ist the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Ich bezweifele aber, ob sie eine oeffentliche Aufnahme (richtiges Wort?) gemacht haben, aufgrund sie sind nur eine Jugendorchester

  • @MissInformati0n please search National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain at Wikipedia (English) to get more info :)

  • What an epic, lush, amazing ending. I'm a newbie to Mahler (this is the first thing I've ever heard of his) and there are tears running down my face.

  • Wow!!! Great!!!!

  • it gave me the tingles! beautiful piece.

  • no wonder the song was written for a 1000 person orchestra/choir

  • It's amazing what we can do when we come together

  • 6 people had their eardrums blown out.

  • I apologize if it's already been asked and answered, but who are the soprano soloists?

  • AAAAA+

  • просто заебись

  • PLAGAL CADENCE!!!!!!

  • You gotta have one hell of a venue to perform this. This piece is HUGE! literally...

  • I love the asian guy at 5:26 who drops his head back.

  • @aha45 he my friend.... jizzed his pans... and it was everywhere... it happened to me at the same point in time...

  • @aha45 Also the guy in white on the left bottom at 4:04 is about to come to a spiritual orgasm :) (totally understandable)

  • @aha45 Seriously? He's just another electrician watching the broken bulps.

  • 6 people are deaf

  • Yes of all, the very best

  • @eerrjjll youre kidding right?

  • @eerrjjll your loss - maybe in the next lifetime, you'll get it.

  • Fantastic

  • this final movement is the most exciting thing that i saw in my entire life :-)

  • @ manytounges

"That which is imperishable is but a semblance

That which is unattainable is here achieved

That which is indescribable here is done

The eternal feminine draws us onward."

  • @jglass54 thank you!

  • 3:59-4:10

    holy fuck

  • @fledgehog

as the fly said as he walked over the mirror, "thats one way of looking at it!!"

  • Das ewig Weibliche

    zieht uns hinan,

    zieht uns hinan,

    ZIEHT UUUUUUUUUNS HIIIIIIN AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!

  • Bravo, Bravo, Bravo

  • Great music and a great performance from a young orchestra, good luck to them all in their careers.

  • Most powerful, perhaps. Greatest, hardly. Gustav went quite a bit overboard in term of orchestral and choral forces. Still, great music and great performance.

  • @Spiritakis Please clarify what the difference is between "powerful" and "greatest". If M8 is the most powerful symphony or has the most powerful climax, what is the "greatest" symphony in your opinion?

  • @hillcresthiker

The difference between ''most powerful'' and ''greatest''?! The two things have nothing in common.

Nor is there anything like ''the greatest symphony''. There are many great symphonies.

Of course if you like to equal ''most powerful'' with ''greatest'' or to choose one symphony as the greatest'' (Mahler's Eight, for instance), you are at perfect liberty to do so. But I don't see why one should limit oneself in such way.

  • @Spiritakis Thank you for your thoughtful reply- You got me thinking about the difference between "the greatest" and the "most powerful" and about limiting myself. You are absolutely correct. While I consider the Mahler 8th and the Mahler 2nd, among the "most powerful" in terms of their subjective emotional impact on the listener (me), by the same token, I feel the underrated Vaughn Williams 5th and Ives 4th, to be among the "greatest" symphonies written. Its all subjective anyway!

  • @hillcresthiker its an opinion, no matter what. Simplifying anything to create "the best" or what have you, in my opinion (harharhar) is best saved for ice cream and movies. Its a sign of the times, and our lovely sub-basement culture. Me thinks it dumbs down everyone concerned. Cant even do a Top 10 List, and I know, both are just for entertainment/fluff value, but still...... *ctn'd*

  • @makthnife *ctn'd*** I would take "powerful" as 'loud' and "greatest" as most played. The Beatles' "Yesterday" is the most recorded song in history, but I would hardly call it the "greatest" song. All in context. Back to the music, M8 is soooooooo moving, I almost forgot my opinion!~!

  • I love the kid at 3:22 looking to his right.. probably like saying in his head "I've been waiting 85 minutes for this moment, im scared but lets do this!"

  • I don`t think in God,only in the wonderfull Mahler and the great`s Rattle regency.

    Thank you, aarup3.

  • What a staggering sound from this orchestra of young musicians.

Gustav would have loved to hear this performance, full of life and emotion.

(I wonder if he did 'hear' it)

  • I heard this for the first time today, and realised I've been missing a trick! This has to be one of the greatest pieces of music on the face of the earth!

  • beautiful.. thank you...

  • Still marvellous.I love this posting. Be at RAH May 15th for London Phil and Vivace choruses for this live. See you there!

  • Kids play with love and passion not for money. That's why you can feel it. Love them.

  • Rattle making magic with these young talents. The sopranos are extended and marvelous.

  • Needs more cowbell.

    I kid, I kid!

  • @hankfletcher Then you need to go to the 7th symphony for that. HA HA

  • @hankfletcher fuck, you really made me laugh, didnt see it comming

  • 1000 singers and the soft dynamics are genuinely soft. un-freaking-believable.

  • Whit a choir like this (and an orchestra like this) any poor and tiny composition will sounds very well, :)

  • Sometimes, I wish this finale wouldn't create a lump in my throat.

  • The libretto! It is the text of the final from the faust symphony of Liszt!

    What a surprise!

Alles Vergängliche ist nur ein Gleichnis

    Das Unzulängliche, hier wird's Ereignis

Das Unbeschreibliche, hier ist es getan

Das Ewig weibliche zieht uns hinan.

  • @gabriel94220

That's because both use the text from Johann Wolfgang Goethes Faust II, they are the last four lines of the play, titled Chorus Mysticus

  • @snufkin789 Indeed,i learnt it

  • Just listened to this again. Still a fabulous posting. I hope the concert at RAH on 15/5/11 is a good as this! Get your tickets while there are some left!

  • AWESOME

  • if only thousands of people, all over the world, would be able to understand:

"Alles Vergängliche ist nur ein Gleichnis"

no more religion, no more war

  • @Severolus what does it mean??

  • @manytounges

I could translate, but it would mean the same. I suggest you to learn a bit german :)

  • Auf dieses Video antworten...

I could translate it, but it wouldn't be the same. I suggest you to learn german :)

  • @manytounges A fair translation would be: All that is transitory is only a parable. I am sure the message is quite deeper than just the words. But it would have been nice if they even TRIED to help you! And even followed some type of politeness in their response.

  • What a GLORIOUS noise!!!!

  • Is it weird that I cried while watching this...it's just so...moving D;

  • @TheRachmaninoffFan

it is not weird if you cried

the weird is when you watch this and don't feel you want to cry

    keep your feeling up :D

  • One person missed the like button...

  • The whole thing is simply stunning. The two sopranos are beyond amazing!! Simon Rattle has done it again! Bravo!!!

  • Mystique?

  • if this much people sings just the f note, that would be enough for me

  • If music like this doesn't burst forth from the Pearly Gates of Heaven,,I will be disappointed.

  • The Japanese know good music.

  • I can't listen to this... I'm not able to stop my tears... AMMMMMAZING!

  • What a kitsch brother Mahler was.

  • semplicemente grandiosa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You can't have a better ending than that one. And what a great response from the audience. Bravo!

  • It's a fine piece. Still, that's a rather sweeping statement. Greater and more powerful than the conclusion of Beethoven's 9th? Than "Dann bricht der grosse Morgen an" at the end of Haydn's "Die Jahreszeiten"? Than the finale of Mozart's "Jupiter"? There's some pretty great competition.

  • @Kenchely Im not a musician but I agree that the Mahler 8th has one of the most powerful finales in ALL music; I'm surprised you compare it to Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven....Beethoven approached the dramatic intensity of romanticism in in the 9th but there is no such drama in Haydn or Mozart. If you want to compare powerful climax', I would consider Mahlers 2nd, the Bruckner 8th and maybe the Sibelius 2nd.

  • @hillcresthiker Hmmm, well I kind of agree, Kenchely can't compare Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn to Mahler! Lets face it, they were Classical composers in the strict sense of the word. Mahler MUST be compared with composers from the early 20th century. So I'm with you on Sibelius 2!....just lovely! And as for Bruckner 8....don't get me started. he he....But this posting is about Gustav Mahler. So, I'm prepared to stick out my neck for you and agree, THIS IS THE FINEST symphonic finale yet written!

  • @longeaton34 really needs a good 'shave-and-a-haircut, two-bits' ending!!

  • Watching Rattle with the sound off is quite amusing

  • Thomas Mann, after attending the premiere (Mahler conducted), dubbed the 8th the greatest spiritual statement of the age. "Woman pulls man upward" are Goethe's lines that occur at the conclusion, as I recall.

  • @davidobrien111 From one translation- "And the woman soul shall leadeth us, upward and on- 'Zeit uns hinan!'

Does this storm the gates of heaven like nothing else in music- I dare say yes!

  • 场面非常地雄伟和宽阔,很好。

  • I just came over here from Wikipedia where this piece was featured on their home page. I never heard this (or any Mahler, particularly) before and all I can say is: wow.

Unabashedly emotional music. I'm still sniffling.

  • @ThaddeusRobe I'm proud of you...

  • @ThaddeusRobe

then i recommend mahler's 9th, especially the final movement. extremely emotional.

  • What movie have I heard this on?? and btw.. Amazing choir, amazing peice. Im in love with it!

  • me emociona,

  • who is the conductor for this recording?

  • @kmill1030 - This is Simon Rattle with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - a highly regarded performance and recording of No.8. Just awesome. This year (2010) was a good year for live performances of this symphony - First Night of the Proms and Halle at Bridgwater Wall in Uk. That may be it though!

  • @ kmill1030 Simon Rattle , directeur de la Philharmonie de Berlin now.

  • It sure looked like an orgasm to me.

  • @freshhh1994

Agreed- I have always said that there are 3 musical orgasms- the climax of Mahlers 2nd and 8th and the beginning of Also Sprach Zarathustra by Strauss!

  • still makes me cry every single time.

    i cannot help myself.

time is not a foe to the brilliance of this work.

  • I'am agree it.

  • omg thats amazing!!! Thank you Mahler

  • Rattle says "bellissima" in the end. Perfect piece!!!

  • Oooooooh!!!!! This is one of the best things I have seen lately. Thanks for posting.

  • How can I find any video copy (dvd or video) of this complete performance?
