Greatest and most powerful symphonic finale ever written? I would certainly place it way up there, in the top three or so. I could scarcely disagree with the poster's description.
Greatest and most powerful symphonic finale ever written? I certainly would put it way up there, perhaps in the top three or so. I could scarcely disagree with the poster's description.
@padredemishijos12 Its the national youth orchestra of Great Britain. I was lucky enough to be there, even if I was so young I barely remember it! Think it may have sewed a subconscious seed that I picked up later in life when I saw it again at the proms a couple of years ago.
Did this and the "Veni, Creator Spritus" with NIU/Northwestern back in the day...is that a young people's orchestra? Fantastic Job Everyone!!!! Please tell who the performers are!
Sir Slackens is great as ever as Maestro. The music is great. Mahler and Richard Strauss are two of the greastest composers of french horn music parts in a symphony. The choir was awesome.
The end.. amazing. Some strong stuff. Having tears in my eyes. So beautiful and so strong. Sorry Herr Mahler, but this a musical orgasm. I Cant say otherwise.
@alger3041 you are right :) - premiere was at September 12, 1910 at Munich, Bavaria conducted by Mahler himself - together with repetition at Sep 13 his biggest success and a real triumph at his lifetime - searching Wikipedia (German) "Gustav Mahler", clicking "8. Sinfonie" you get related page with pic of his rehearsal at premiere location "Neue Musik-Festhalle" :)
"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?" - 1882
@boxfervor Then in Munich on the 12th of September in 1910, God was revived, not as nature, society, or any creed but as a thousand voices joining shouting "Gloria sit Patri Domino!" No more death, no more sorrow, just art and love!
@boxfervor For there the throne sits still waiting, shining, and the trumpets will sound of his return! The godhead, the ubermensch who had no reflection and descended into despair will climb the steps slowly to take his rightful place on this new perfect throne not to rule man but to lead him into the future!
For those who want to know what the orchestra is... it's the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. I only know because I recognised the logo on their ties xD
@FAVAmobile Because the purpose of a movie soundtrack piece is to fit into a movie and that's it. Mahler's symphonies aren't "like a movie soundtrack", because they're much much more than just background music.
@tdcmoo You realize that Mahler was around before movie soundtracks... it would make more sense to say that movie soundtracks sound like Mahler. Before you make such an ignorant statement, think about it first.
@tlcooper93 ahahha.....calm down, calm down....you don´t need to insult me because of that....i don´t think i've insulted you....it was only my way of saying that i don't like it that much....it sounds for me too superficial...the way I found to express that was comparing it to movie soundtracks...don't take it personal....relax dude, music should bring people together, and not serving as a point of fights or for insulting other people, who don't share your opinion....

@dvichotex Der Regisseur ist Simon Rattle. Orchester ist the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Ich bezweifele aber, ob sie eine oeffentliche Aufnahme (richtiges Wort?) gemacht haben, aufgrund sie sind nur eine Jugendorchester
Most powerful, perhaps. Greatest, hardly. Gustav went quite a bit overboard in term of orchestral and choral forces. Still, great music and great performance.
@Spiritakis Please clarify what the difference is between "powerful" and "greatest". If M8 is the most powerful symphony or has the most powerful climax, what is the "greatest" symphony in your opinion?
The difference between ''most powerful'' and ''greatest''?! The two things have nothing in common.
Nor is there anything like ''the greatest symphony''. There are many great symphonies.
Of course if you like to equal ''most powerful'' with ''greatest'' or to choose one symphony as the greatest'' (Mahler's Eight, for instance), you are at perfect liberty to do so. But I don't see why one should limit oneself in such way.
@Spiritakis Thank you for your thoughtful reply- You got me thinking about the difference between "the greatest" and the "most powerful" and about limiting myself. You are absolutely correct. While I consider the Mahler 8th and the Mahler 2nd, among the "most powerful" in terms of their subjective emotional impact on the listener (me), by the same token, I feel the underrated Vaughn Williams 5th and Ives 4th, to be among the "greatest" symphonies written. Its all subjective anyway!
@hillcresthiker its an opinion, no matter what. Simplifying anything to create "the best" or what have you, in my opinion (harharhar) is best saved for ice cream and movies. Its a sign of the times, and our lovely sub-basement culture. Me thinks it dumbs down everyone concerned. Cant even do a Top 10 List, and I know, both are just for entertainment/fluff value, but still...... *ctn'd*
@makthnife *ctn'd*** I would take "powerful" as 'loud' and "greatest" as most played. The Beatles' "Yesterday" is the most recorded song in history, but I would hardly call it the "greatest" song. All in context. Back to the music, M8 is soooooooo moving, I almost forgot my opinion!~!
I love the kid at 3:22 looking to his right.. probably like saying in his head "I've been waiting 85 minutes for this moment, im scared but lets do this!"
I heard this for the first time today, and realised I've been missing a trick! This has to be one of the greatest pieces of music on the face of the earth!
Just listened to this again. Still a fabulous posting. I hope the concert at RAH on 15/5/11 is a good as this! Get your tickets while there are some left!
@manytounges A fair translation would be: All that is transitory is only a parable. I am sure the message is quite deeper than just the words. But it would have been nice if they even TRIED to help you! And even followed some type of politeness in their response.
It's a fine piece. Still, that's a rather sweeping statement. Greater and more powerful than the conclusion of Beethoven's 9th? Than "Dann bricht der grosse Morgen an" at the end of Haydn's "Die Jahreszeiten"? Than the finale of Mozart's "Jupiter"? There's some pretty great competition.
@Kenchely Im not a musician but I agree that the Mahler 8th has one of the most powerful finales in ALL music; I'm surprised you compare it to Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven....Beethoven approached the dramatic intensity of romanticism in in the 9th but there is no such drama in Haydn or Mozart. If you want to compare powerful climax', I would consider Mahlers 2nd, the Bruckner 8th and maybe the Sibelius 2nd.
@hillcresthiker Hmmm, well I kind of agree, Kenchely can't compare Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn to Mahler! Lets face it, they were Classical composers in the strict sense of the word. Mahler MUST be compared with composers from the early 20th century. So I'm with you on Sibelius 2!....just lovely! And as for Bruckner 8....don't get me started. he he....But this posting is about Gustav Mahler. So, I'm prepared to stick out my neck for you and agree, THIS IS THE FINEST symphonic finale yet written!
Thomas Mann, after attending the premiere (Mahler conducted), dubbed the 8th the greatest spiritual statement of the age. "Woman pulls man upward" are Goethe's lines that occur at the conclusion, as I recall.
I just came over here from Wikipedia where this piece was featured on their home page. I never heard this (or any Mahler, particularly) before and all I can say is: wow.
For me it sounds like the transition in the universe from the age of pisces to the age of aquarius! And at 4:41 a big explosion filled with the energy of love is spread out all over to us to share with each other for ever and ever...
@kmill1030 - This is Simon Rattle with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - a highly regarded performance and recording of No.8. Just awesome. This year (2010) was a good year for live performances of this symphony - First Night of the Proms and Halle at Bridgwater Wall in Uk. That may be it though!
Agreed- I have always said that there are 3 musical orgasms- the climax of Mahlers 2nd and 8th and the beginning of Also Sprach Zarathustra by Strauss!
THE GIRL STANDING BY THE DRUMS SEEMS CUTE.
I WOULD KISS HER ON HER FACE.

@davidobrien111 From one translation- "And the woman soul shall leadeth us, upward and on- 'Zeit uns hinan!'
Does this storm the gates of heaven like nothing else in music- I dare say yes!

I just came over here from Wikipedia where this piece was featured on their home page. I never heard this (or any Mahler, particularly) before and all I can say is: wow.
Unabashedly emotional music. I'm still sniffling.

For me it sounds like the transition in the universe from the age of pisces to the age of aquarius! And at 4:41 a big explosion filled with the energy of love is spread out all over to us to share with each other for ever and ever...

who is the conductor for this recording?
kmill1030 1 year ago
@kmill1030 - This is Simon Rattle with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - a highly regarded performance and recording of No.8. Just awesome. This year (2010) was a good year for live performances of this symphony - First Night of the Proms and Halle at Bridgwater Wall in Uk. That may be it though!

@ kmill1030 Simon Rattle , directeur de la Philharmonie de Berlin now.

@freshhh1994
Agreed- I have always said that there are 3 musical orgasms- the climax of Mahlers 2nd and 8th and the beginning of Also Sprach Zarathustra by Strauss!
