Pre-code Hollywood was corrupting the masses, but more important (!), Hollywood was losing its audience (money) with bad publicity of its stars off screen shenanigans. The Hays Commission (though not without its own corruption) gave Hollywood and its stars a better reputation and a larger audience (similar to what Tony Pastor did for vaudeville). Vulgarity is what killed vaudeville, not the movies - just as beauty killed the beast, not the airplanes, in King Kong.
UGH! Right after the doctor says "You're just wasted", he sang the delicious "A Woman Needs Something Like That". It was cut (and lost) after the film was re-issued after the production code came in.
Was this the inspiration for boom boody boom, I wonder?

Oh my, major faux pas! NOT Lubitsch, but Rouben Mamoulian. 50 lashes!

Jeannette was a MAJOR cutie! And excellent singer. Nice to hear her so young here.
The rhyming dialogue is funny, if a little strange. The Lubitsch touch.

It is a misconception that Vaudeville was vulgar. Just the opposite. Many houses fired comics who used risque jokes or any sort of profanity.
