you can loan/rent a spring commpressor from autozone/pepboys nowdays for like 30 bucks. you get it all back when you return the tool though, no cost to you.
bought some monroe struts from rockauto.com for 30 bucks a piece. worked like a charm. 60 bucks for new front struts, all the places i called wanted over 400.

Do you need air tools for the spring compressor, or does it just make it faster and easier?

When spinning that top mount nut shouldnt you squeeze around the dust boot that around the shock to make sure your not spinning it, could burn it up.

Good idea, those safety hooks. I am always a little afraid of those spring compressors slipping loose. It has never actually happened but I've only used them a couple of times .

You can if you what,just make sure it is the blue so they will come off next time.
