ugh!!! another thing i forgot to mention, and another thing with Patti is that she knows how to pick some background singers and her band as well. I also love how she amps up her band and singers while giving them shout outs. Not too many artist do that. I'm not saying that other artist that don't do that aren't good. I don't know how to explain it.
did anyone get into those two high notes she slapped out of her mouth @ 0:26-0:28? i'm canceling my youtube account and disconnecting my internet right now. and i'm also going to throw away my computer because i can't deal with her anymore. i'm done.
Oh my god! haha! She is a vocal acrobat. I just listened to this from about 10 of the greatest singers of all time, Sinatra, Tom Jones, Elvis, Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, Righteous Bros, Mahalia Jackson, etc.. and this was my favourite by far. She blows the roof off.
I love how the background singers are looking at her in amazement. They know that they are so very lucky and fortunate to have been in the presence of one of the best entertainers of all time.
When she said she recorded this about 25 years ago she was actually preferring to the studio recording she did in the 1980's by herself, so actually she was telling the truth.
Think this was something? Check out Patti's performance at the Apollo. She tore this song up, down & all around. As soon as she came out, she was on fire! (And was cutting a mean step too!LOL)
I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYONE BUT PATTI SING LIKE THIS ESPECIALLY THAT NOTE SHE HIT 3:57 - 4:03..MAN PATTI IS THE REAL QUEEN PERIOD SHE NOT THE THE QUEEN OF SOUL POP ROCK ETC...SHE IS......THE QUEEN....END OF STORY!!!
@morphillyous I totally agree the apollo preformance she did of this song was HER BEST PERFORMANCE EVER!!!! out of this world!!! gosh!!! everytime i remember it just !! wow... too bad there is not a vid of it in youtube ive been serching like crazy!!! havent found it yet!, but u guys can take a peak of it in her biography in here!
good but she's no match to miss regine velasquez of the philppines. regine are much more powerful and to high than this pls see rgine velasquez version and i assure you its much better and powerful than this tnx.
@trixieparty regine is good but patti has more soul in her version. and having it still mastered from the early 60's tells you something. truly inbalanced.
Oy! You're beating a dead horse trying to make a point that is irrelevant to THIS broadcast. The point is relevant, no doubt, but elsewhere. With THIS show, though, the producers intended Patti to be THE centerpiece.
The year was 2004. She was THE headliner, THE ONLY headliner! She exaggerated about when she recorded it...by another 15½ years. She recorded this song with the Bluebelles in late-1963, at the age of 19. She was a month away from 60 at the broadcast of Divas 2004, and she hit that very same note that she first hit more than 40 years beforehand.
@goldenthoth I'm afraid that was the case. Gladys couldn't stay to the end, because she had a one-woman show that same night elsewhere in Vegas. The numbers were structured such that Gladys sang "The Way We Were" solo and 3 songs (duets and a trio) in a medley, and was gone before the finale. Patti did 7 songs (5 solos, 2 duets/groups) and the closer.
@goldenthoth Point taken. Unfortunately, and OFFICIALLY, that is not how it turned out. I watched ithis one back then. and clearly the emphasis was squarely on Patti. Gladys' performances were largely confined to one segment of the program, while Patti was everywhere.
@CookyMonzta i remember this concert very well. i also remember thinking to myself; how come gladys isn't singing more? what i didn't know then unlike now is that gladys has another show to perform (thanks for the information); that being said gladys is still a healiner.
@goldenthoth This show was the first time I saw Cyndi Lauper play an instrument. I didn't know beforehand that she always played instruments, and I didn't see any of her 1990s videos until recently.
The producers intended for Patti to be the centerpiece of this show beforehand. I pretty much figured that out from watching it. There is absolutely no doubt that Gladys is a big-enough name to be a headliner at any show like this, but the focus was squarely on Patti for THIS show.
@goldenthoth Maybe I shouldn't have used the word 'headliner' 5 posts back if I thought you'd take offense and thought I was diminishing Gladys' achievements as a supreme legend. 'Centerpiece' is more appropriate to describe Patti's role for this broadcast; and a supreme legend, she is as well.
Patti has sung this song in many different ways in her performances. But when she sung this song on "Motown Returns To The Apollo", she was magnificent! She tore the song up, to say the least. And the choir made it even more spectacular. It gave you goose bumps.
one of the few REAL divas left in the business...its not just about singing. REAL divas carry themselves like DIVAS..real DIVAS have a surreal stage presence...real DIVAS make grand entrances...real DIVAS dont need gimmicks and vocal enhancements...real DIVAS get standing ovations without trying...and real DIVAS hang around longer than one fuckin' album. Patti LaBelle is one of those DIVAS.
The best singer ever
