alice's adventures in wonderland [originaly alice's adventures underground when first written for alice liddel] and through the looking glass and what alice found there.
hah, i'm totaly hyped up too. one of my friends would be perfect for alice. i hope she does a reading and then sends it to tim!
I highly doubt Tim would try to make it Gothic looking. It's most likely it would appear like the illustrations in the book considering it's supposed to be a computer animated motion capture film like Beowulf from what I heard.
Sorry for posting that twice, it didn't seem to show up the first time.
Have you seen much else of his? My favorites are "Dimensions of Dialogue" specifically part 2, "Darkness Light Darkness" and "The Flat" but that's just naming a few. Check out the music video he directed for Hugh Cornwell, look up "Another Kind of Love." He reuses a bunch of older themes and images in it. He also did a couple of shorts for MTV in the late 80s. You don't see that kind of creativity on MTV anymore...
MTV should at least have the courtesy to change their name...
As for the video: I really like all the references to his older work in it...I could almost imagine him thinking "Well, this is probably as mainstream as I'm going to get, so I guess I'll just include every single thing I've done in the few decades."
The two MTV spots are called "Flora" and "Meat Love" if you wanna check those out. Both are pretty short.
The prospect of doing stop-motion blows my mind. I've messed around with it before, just for laughs, but the stuff J.S. does seems totally out of this world.
I agree there's similarity, but in my mind I get a distinctive feeling from both of them. Svankmajer, especially, has something that I think his settings capture that you don't really see in Burton, who is more theatrical (not saying one is better than the other for this, just different).
Burton has elaborate sets and acting, even in his stop-motion stuff; Svankmajer just has this gritty, even uncomfortable dreaminess, both in the actions of the object-characters and the bleak backgrounds. Both are great though.
Oh, one more thing. I've never really seen their stuff, but besides Tim Burton some others who supposedly take a lot of influence from Svankmajer are The Brothers Quay. Like I said, I've not really seen their stuff, maybe part of one video, but from what I hear they're really good and really similar to J.S. They might be worth checking out.
Rice Krispies is the most violent. Snap, Crackle, Pop. But as for the Golden Grahms, if I remember correctly the box of them was God for some reason.
It was just some my friend and I did during one night of boredom in high school. It didn't turn out especially well;, but there really wasn't much to it.

Heh. I heard about this on wikipedia and ran in the living and started screaming from joy.
And I love the Czech version of Alice, too.

I dig Svankmajer. Even if his name's true pronunciation is unknown to me.
I compulsively buy every different version of Alice and Wonderland I see.
TheRealGentleman 4 years ago
sh-VAHn-kah-mayor? maybe? lol idk how to pronounce it either
Yeah, i have a totally unhealthy fascination with Alice in Wonderland =)
BLABLA600incredibly 4 years ago
Who knows...as long as I can spell it right to find it on searches. Ever tried to ask someone in a store if they have any of his movies?
"Well, it's called "Alice", but you'd probably have to look up the director."
"What's the director's name?"
"Uh...Svankmajer. S'vankmyer. S'vahnk-meer." That goes on for a few minutes and then comes the "try to remember how to spell it" phase.

Ha...ever try to ask someone in a store if they have his movies? The pronunciation and spelling games are pretty annoying, lol.

Ooo! i love darkness light darkness, thats defiantly one of my favorites.
Yeah, MTV nowadays only consists of different versions of dating shows; Date my Mom, Shot at love, etc, etc
bleh =(
P.S i just checked out Another Kind of Love,
it's amazing!

TheRealGentleman 4 years ago
Yeah, i've always wanted to try stop-motion but so far Svankmajer is the only person i've seen do it successfully.
Hmm; Tim Burton doesn't exactly use stop motion but his work seems to have a Svankmajer feel to it doesn't it?
BLABLA600incredibly 4 years ago

I just checked them out; their pieces have a really unique dream-quality about them, i love it!
There's this film festival i want to enter,
maybe I'll try stop-motion?
hm. wish me luck.
xx
BLABLA600incredibly 4 years ago
cool, I need to check them out myself.
also cool. what film festival? good luck!
(I'd like to try stop motion again myself)
TheRealGentleman 4 years ago
idk what it called actually C=
it's some random small-town thing for teenagers or something.
you should defiantly try it again!!
REALGomer420 4 years ago
ah, gotcha.
as for stop motion...yeah. the last time I tried it with my friend we shot a Golden Grahms box attacking the camera...yeah.
TheRealGentleman 4 years ago
hahahahahaaa golden grahms??nice choice.
Lucky Charms strikes me as being more violent, however =)
but, hey, thats just my opinion
how'd that turn out?
