The novel of the film reconciles the asskicking Grievous of the original cartoon series with the cowardly, weak one seen in the film. In the novel he's renowned as a strategist and butcher of Jedi, but he knows that Kenobi and Skywalker are far more powerful than he is.

I recommend other fans to read the novel and embrace the awesomeness that is the written Grievous.
