  • Song Name : hey there Delilah - Plain where T's

    hit Like

  • very handy tipps given...

  • Great work and great song!!!!

  • Great song!

  • who sings the song?

  • :-) It was the first upload I uploaded another one for 3 mins, excluding all those here youtube.com/watch?v=MyJ1ZYIuAwE

But THIS vid is the first one which was also featured in YouTube and got lot of views already. So, I didn't remove it.

    :-)

  • thanks for showing me how to google something...this was really helpful

  • i was gonna watch this video but then i read your assholey replies to the comments. youre arrogant and rude and im not even gonna bother watching the vid

  • @theyleftusallbehind Thanks for your valuable comment, Thanks for not watching. Reading comments doesn't help you learn anything, watching vid may... People have been leaving their arrogant and insulting messages. I didn't tell them to watch my vid. If you don't like it, why don't you just leave it - to keep it simple.

Many people don't understand what parabolic shape means and more importantly, how can be create the "sections" to build a para.

  • @madcityphotog "reading comments doesn't help you learn anything"? sometimes the comments help loads more than the video. i always read some comments and 80% of the time i learn something from them. idk how you'd ever come to the conclusion that the comments dont help you learn anything but whatever man.

  • @theyleftusallbehind There are separate website for "comments" only, which are called forums. People make lot of efforts to make many tutorials on youtube, and some people just come over to leave filthy remarks.

I am glad to know that you learn a lot from the "comments" before watching the video. Thanks for reading the comments and deciding not to watch the vid. Whatever...Take care man. God bless.

  • Some photographers get pissed off when someone rips off their photos but they have no problem stealing copyrighted music...go figure

  • @rulephoto 1. Check audioswap_main inside Youtube- It lets anyone attach or swap audio tracks from their audio library, AFTER user video is uploaded. But you may call it stealing if that makes you happy.

BTW, my video is a featured video in YouTube as well.

    2. I am not a photographer, but an engineer with passion for photography.

    3. Many intelligent people have taken their valuable time to leave comments in my video, join the club.

  • madcity,

    could answer this question please??

"what did you use on the center of the para for defusing, the flash light, and please explain how should we make it?"

  • Hi.

That's great idea thanks for share it,

I'd tried to make it, but I had some question about how to make the parabolic reflector and the accessory that we need:

what did you use on the center of the para for defusing, the flash light, and how should we make it?

I have d90 Nikon camera, could you help me please and suggest, a normal hot shoe flash(or speed light) for it ( on low budget actually:) ?

  • @mj6693 Making what he made would only save you about $50-100 on a similar modifier of that size. You still need to pay $200-500 for a flash for this to work, you CANNOT use a normal tungsten bulb or any continuous light to get this effect. Essentially a misleading title since this is definitely not a "$0 project", more like a "$200-500 spent on a flash project".

  • @channel49 @mj6693: People miss the whole point, despite given clear pointer on Para FB and Broncolor Giant umbrealls - which cost few thousand dollars (just the reflector alone) used in high fashion photography. Mine is smaller size as cardboard can't hold that large size. I assumed you own a camera and a flash (I bought ONE used flash for 30$ in a camera store). It is how it can be used. Call it anything u want to. People suggested why don't I buy an umbrella for 30$ !!!

  • @madcityphotog No, it doesn't look like you're using hotlights. My whole point was for this to work, YOU NEED A FLASH. It certainly isn't a $0 project if you you need to buy a flash, a lightstand, etc.

  • This is cool and all, but you need a flash regardless to take beauty shots. Hotlights just don't have the same feel as flash and a modifier isnt going to change that. As far as DIY goes, an ebay beauty dish is only $50 and a Mola Demi is only $200, if you can't even invest that amount of money, you shouldn't be taking photos to begin with.

  • i like the content but quite dragging, please edit your video next time

  • The music...just for teenagers...

  • Power to the people! Home made creativity!

  • "View in fullscreen recommended" at 240p? no, thanks.

  • Very cool. While I could probably figure out a cut-out form idea from the video do you have a stencil available? I've seen a few folks asking and it'd be really helpful.

Oh, and my two cents, this is one of my favorite songs and bands (Hey There Delilah by Plain White T's). In the future you can add a link to songs so people who like them can purchase if they so choose, it also gives the band credit. Just a thought.

    Thanks for the post though.

  • I've attached a video response to show some optional material for aluminum foil. I like the outcome of your project! Thanks for sharing.

  • fcked up music !!!

  • Comment removed

  • 1:14 OMG !!

  • @PokerPhaze My handmade reflector is similar to "broncolor paraFB" and "ProFoto Giant Umbrella", but smaller in size. Those are few thousand dollars (even the ones that are smaller and same size as I made). I mentioned it in the "Text" that appears in the beginning.

  • Where can i found the plans?

  • 8:17 is a big wow, and 8:21 is a triple wow . . ..what a pair of eyes that young lady has !!!

  • i like this song

  • i love the song good choice ... loving it

  • damn!this looks cheap and good!tnx!

  • Great info love how you study light and decided to make your own tools!!! Keep up the great work thanks for posting

  • stunning photo's!

  • looks like a VERY PRO umbrella what DIY ?

  • its a brillant idea

  • Fail

  • get rid of the dumb song.

  • @jimnkristy What ! Dumb Song !!!! I thought I am having so many views because of the song...Suggest me some intelligent song (or whatever is opposite to "dumb song").

  • @jimnkristy What ! Dumb Song !!! I thought these many views is just because of the song .,, Anyways, suggest me some intelliegent song (whatever is opposite of "dump songs"). Thanks for watching though..

  • @jimnkristy What ! Dumb Song !!! I thought these many views is just because of the song .,, Anyways, suggest me some intelliegent song (whatever is opposite of "dump songs"). Thanks for watching though..

  • @madcityphotog It probably is, I just hate that song. No offense. :)

  • حنين إمي واثابت

  • @madcityphotog : At no cost? Aren't afraid of getting caught when you steal the supplies you used to make it? Also, time=money right? So there's the couple of hours you would spend making it, which doesn't matter if you're unemployed I guess. Also, there's the "cost" of lesser results.... ebay has $40 dollar beauty dishes...

  • @jarenwhitehouse Brilliant conclusion. This is an illustration of the giant reflectors (Broncolor Para or Profoto Giant umbrellas - 6' to 10' diameter, price from 4000$ to 8000$ Just the umbrella). Google it!

If you are not homeless, all items I used are available in most household. Time is money, if you INVEST time on learning (self or training course), you don't get paid. But it pays off later. I own beauty dises (2), umbrellas(4), Octa, softboxes. I do an engineering job. Nice comments!!

  • niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • send the spec's to china and have it 'cloned' ... i'd buy a cheap imitation...if the result is similar to the over-priced broncolors.

  • @madcityphotog ok, i finally did some research...that broncolor para reflector is super expensive...

  • what is camera setting ? apeture / shutter ....thanx

  • @luvnano1 Aperture f8.0, Shutter 1/125 (max sync in that Camera) and ISO 100.

Almost all my studio pics are taken in that setting or something very close to that.

  • BELLO

  • this looks pretty good

  • I think this a great way to save money and gain some images. But I would also think about buying a name brand one if you get hired by a big commercial client. Otherwise

    nicely done thanks for sharing.

    Best

  • I think this is a great way to save money & works for the home studio. But I would really consider buying a name brand one if you get a big client. It make's you look

better. But for at home and shooting family and small projects I think it is a great

    Technique. Nicely done.

  • was all the screen shots of you browsing what a parabolic reflector is really neccessary

  • very clever... i love the end results

  • girl at 0:41 gorgeous

  • Genius. I would have never thought of this. I'm guessing this reflector would work with continuous light as well, but could be wrong. Do you know?

  • This is absolute genius. Thank you for sharing. From a viewer's standpoint, I'd remove the google bits from the video.

One question, would this only work for a flash set up or would continuous lighting hold the same benefit? I'm guessing yes, but am not 100% certain.

  • how would you do full body length? lol

  • wonderful video, I'm going to attemp to make one for myself, thanks!

  • GREAT VIDEO!

FamousPhotog's comments are spot on: the only thing that is missing is some touch up in Photoshop and who is to say that Madcityphotog did not intend to do so eventually. The photos came out lovely and retouching is a personal preference. Sometimes it is nice to see a model natural as opposed to every subject's portrait having a PERFECT AIRBRUSH LOOK.

  • wow~! thank you for sharing this~!

    Ill try to make one

  • what song is this

  • @Eviltwin696 Plain White T´s - Hey there Delilah

  • thanks a lot to share your knowledgement!!!!!!!!!!! 5 stars!

  • Just out of curiosity do you think covering an old fashion lampshade might possibly have the same effect.

  • I am definitely going to give this a try! Thanks for posting

  • you could use an old umbrella

  • the music is sad, makes me want to weep

  • Hi there madcity, great video!

Whats the music used in this video? its really great

  • WOW this is great. thxs

  • Thanks for posting. I'm a SLR noob. Do you have a template for this?

  • Very nice video and ideas for a very cheap light projection. Thanks a lot

  • I use a board of styrofoam about 2mm thick,

The flash lites through this board. Depending on the distance of the flash from the board I can get a smooth shadow or no shadow at all.

  • why don't you just use a soft box with a grid?

  • Because I don't want to use soft box with a grid. This was about making an interesting light modifier. Many people don't understand the importance of that. People commented why I don't use umbrella instead. Parabolic reflector is a completely different kind of light modifier, used by many fashion photographers, and those cost few thousand dollars (without the light and stand, just the modifier).

  • @kevinkamin

Good stuff - I use Briese for film and know many Photographers who use them for stills - nice natural look

  • Love it!You are creating a large light source which creates giant smooth highlights and can'tbeat the look of the "diamond necklace" catchlights

  • if you've done any algebra you'd know about the properties of a parabola. it's your basic y=x2, just magnify it to the size you want and you got yourself a reflector.

  • Very good photo.but the girls were peter .

  • This is very cool!! But once it is built, how would I use it? Does the reflector have to be set up with my camera? Please send me a message with answers if you can, I'm a beginner photographer and this really catches my interest!

  • The homemade parabolic is doing a lot better job than the commercial bought "beauty dish". Not surprising, since this person's design of his homemade reflector mimics the effect of the $20,000 Briese Focus lights, lights often acknowledged as being the best in the world. The only thing missing from these photos is airbrushing in Photoshop! Bravo!

  • your vid is too griany to see the small text

  • It's really all about lighting and the lens.

  • i love it

    i love it

    i love it

  • YOUR TUTORIAL IS AMAZING!!!

    i loved it!!

  • hi, thanks for the tutorial, this is fantastic, i start to make one in scale after i saw this video but i have problems whit the palets and the hole that they make together in the center of the parabol.. mine has 16 palets, just like i saw in the links that you show to us.. please, can you gave me some advice to how to make it or show me the dimetions of the palett that you use on yours..

Sorry for my bad englisg.. ;)

    Again, thanks for the video!!

    Un saludo,

    desde Republica Dominicana.

thanks so much for sharing this

  • thats actually really good for a homeade one u have talent

  • I am going to start with photography. One of theese days i m goin to buy a D-SLR camera.I think of E-420 or E-520 Olympus with 14-42Lens.What you think?

  • It is the light really, and the lens as well. Camera is probably the last thing you need to worry.

However, if you get a nikon or canon line of bodies, then you have an huge selection of lenses that you can use. Lenses last much longer that camera body, so you can buy another camera body and keep use previous lenses. Some of my used lenses are really old and really cheap (manual focus though, but great glass).

    Thanks for your comment.

  • cool, looks professional

  • Cool video! Anything that can keep equipment costs down for beginners is helpful. Simple little tutorials like this are a great way to share knowledge.

  • beautyfull pictures :D

  • heyy wat camara was used for the pics?

  • you did a good job on this. : )

  • Hi.

well done and thanks for sharing it.

But it seems that your reflector is not parabolic. sides seem to be straight. A parabolic one may have curves sides. Could you give more details ? The results look good.

  • interesting video. annoying music

  • Making this is a lot harder than it looks. Could you possibly give step by step instructions of how you made your umbrella? Or if not then just the dimensions of the cardboard pieces. I love how your photos turned out btw.

  • how does it differ from a beauty dish with grid? do you have a picture comparison?

  • That is what this experiment is about!!! From timeline 8:31 (this video) till end shows examples of Beauty dish with same models. Most people don't get past first 5 mins though :-)

  • @madcityphotog I watched the entire video great tutorial and if I was not such a lazy ... I would have a shot at making one :) Great video though does what it says on the can.

  • @madcityphotog thats because 4 minutes of it is you cruisin the internet. BORING! we can look up the info ourselves, just give a brief description of what you are doing, not all your research. thats just a lazy way of presenting.

  • Isnt this the same as a silver umbrella?

  • If the umbrealla is parabolic in shape and the light source is kept at the focus of it, then yes.

If reflecting anything off a silver surface is considered same - then also yes. True answer

depends on someone's interest on the understanding of lights...

  • very very nice thanks

  • What did you use to attach the reflector onto the light stand?

  • Cover photo (the one that comes first) is enhanced. But for the rest there is minimal to no enhancement.

  • Is this the original photo taken from the SLR without any enhancement...or did you have some enhancement with this on a photoshop?
