  • This song is pure beauty

  • Simply the best Ave Maria out there. Magníficat ánima mea Dóminum,

et exsultávit spíritus meus in Deo salvatóre meo.

  • This is really beautiful. If you'd like to hear a different--but equally beautiful--version, check out the Ave Maria sung by the American Boychoir (plainchant setting by Richard Clark). It's gorgeous! Just type "ave maira clark" in the Youtube search box and enjoy!

  • *REPEAT BUTTON* Great song to relax... <3

  • i used to sing the trio part, then i took an arrow to the knee

  • @Uncram23 All of my why!

  • This song is on my all time favourite Christmas CD, "Our Heart's Joy", a Chanticleer Christmas. When I listen to it I feel completely at peace.

  • This, my friends, is what Christmas is about.

  • I sang this version with The Singing Buckeyes in Columbus, OH. The first time I sang it, I had to stop just to listen, as I didn't know there was a "repeal" in the song. It is, and forever will be, a moving piece of music. Immediately after the repeal started, the tears did as well, and they still flow freely - glad I know where all the keys are on my keyboard. Thanks for the post.

  • Youtube audio cannot do this song justice. Get the CD, play it on a really good stereo system in a darkened room. Makes me cry from goose bumps every time.

  • I just heard them do this live about three hours ago - i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e.

If you ever get a chance to see one of their Christmas season concerts, GO! This is their most-requested piece, and they always include it in the performance. Their version of "Silent Night" is unmissable as well.

  • 11 athiest have no taste in good music.

  • we play this in our marching band for our ballad... one day our director showed up and played this on the speakers in the room, it was the quietist that band room has ever been afterwards

  • I'm from the bay area and have sung Biebl's "Ave Maria" with several groups, but no one will ever touch Chanticleer's performance of this song. It lifts your spirit and sets an ethereal tone to any performance hall or church. If you have never heard this group sing this live....it should be on your bucket list. You will not be disappointed

  • I sang this arrangement with the VA Choral Society last year and ask our director each rehearsal if we can sing this piece again. Without a doubt, the most moving piece I have ever a. heard and b. was a part of. I listen to it year-round, and at least twice when I play it.

  • The very voice of God Himself. This is the most elegant song ever written.

  • This is truly inspired.

  • Deng I will be performing this in 6 weeks (_-_);; but what a beautiful voice!!!

  • how could anybody listen to this and still hate, kill or mistreat anyone or anything. It's like this song is so pure and honest, straight from a euphoric place.

  • This is absolutely the most beautiful song ever written. I am so happy our church choir is performing the SATB version.

  • Hey im from paoli Indiana and I am in a marching band there and this is part of our show this year really love the song

  • Chills, meet spine. Spine, chills. Heavenly. That's the only word for it.

  • This is one of the most relaxing and gorgeous things I've ever sung. I LOVE THIS RECORDING OF IT. :)

  • best ave maria i have ever heard!!!!!

  • sublime...just sublime.

  • @barehairy Composers as early as Tallis (1505-1585) and probably earlier wrote a lot of English music actually, yes. But in Western Europe at least Latin was THE language of the Catholic church and as such a lot of sacred music, even to this day, is written in Latin. Latin also forms the basis for all the 'romance' languages in Europe such as French, Spanish, Portuguese (to some extent) and, of course, Italian. Even our language is influenced by Latin to the order of about 55%.

  • I would like to sing in a choir like this! It feels angelical!

  • This is what they mean by beautiful music

  • 10 people accidentally clicked dislike

  • @qcrow11 make that 11

  • I believe it is safe to say that I have only felt as close to God one other time than when I performed this song in college at our Christmas Department Concert at Berea College! That only other time was when God saved me! I can listen to this song anytime I am at my weakest and feel like I am right with Jesus.....singing in the Heavenly Choir! Thank you for posting this piece. I especially love this reindition with the male voices. May God bless all who hear this magnificent piece!

  • live version is better! go figure... Maybe different group for that recording.

  • 8 people have ears made of solid rock.

  • complete athiest, but this song one of the best songs ever written

  • @airborn101st

Same here. When I was in high school I got to play an arrangement of this in band. This is by far one of the most moving pieces to play. Isn't music beautiful?

  • @airborn101st Believe it or not, being an Atheist has nothing to do with your ability to enjoy music

  • This has to be the best choral piece ever written. The most beautiful sounds to ever be created by a human voice. Vere hoc est opus Dei.

  • now THESE are men

  • one word to describe this peice, beautiul.

  • anyone know where to buy this recording or from what album it comes from?

  • @simon5413 can get the cd from chanticleer . org

  • Yes! The best Ave Maria! I love Jesus.

  • Wayne High school performed this song under the direction of Basil Fett and it was absolutely gorgeous

  • My chor is doing this and i'm the beginning solo...I'M SO PUMPED!! :D

  • I'm confused - where are the sopranos?

  • @Taenyr The piece in its original form was written for men's choir.

  • @congelatore Right, but Chanticleer has sopranos and altos...

  • @Taenyr No, Chanticleer is made up of men only. They have men that sing soprano and alto. You can see examples of this in many of their new pieces that are on YouTube.

  • @congelatore Yes, yes, I know that. Trained counter-tenors in the alto and soprano ranges - but where are those male sopranos and altos on this track? This sounds like it's just tenors, baritones and basses.

  • @Taenyr You can hear them faintly throughout, such as 1:38-1:44, but they are singing the song in it's original (and best) version. Instead of having the male sopranos sing a non-existent soprano line in the piece (the original didn't have sopranos or altos) they are simply singing the first tenor of the choir part.

Also, this video was taken from a concert that was done when the choir did not have two members that are currently singing soprano.

  • @congelatore From a CD.. not concert.. I meant. The live concert version that's on YouTube also was taken when those two members where not in the choir.

  • After a hard day at work (and at home), I listen to this. This song moves me to tears, and it reminds me to stop and take little listen for a little while to experience the pure joy and beauty in music. Maybe it may not cure all the troubles in the world, but it sure gets close.

  • This was sung at a friend's wedding a few days ago - it moved me to tears.

  • Here is the voice of God. What a gorgeous arrangement

  • Best version on here.

  • i did this song in my high school chamber choir over 10 years ago. i've heard soooo many different chamber and chant songs, as well as several different renditions of this particular song, and nothing, NOTHING compares to this song and this version. takes my breath away every time. does anyone know exactly which choir it is on this recording?

  • @jamesannucci it is actually chanticleer. A phenomenal group.

  • @Trombonist550 oh wow! i thought chanticleer was just the name of the person who arranged this version. any other great works this group has done?

  • @jamesannucci Well yes they do a lot of arranging for their own suits. I would definitely recommend listening to their O Magnum Mysterium by Victoria they arranged for all males (the song is written is SATB format). Do listen to their arranged version of O Shenandoah it's a phenomenal arrangement. If you like those message me back. Thanks!

  • Had I done a little bit worse on my audition and not gotten into the Honors Choir for all state, I would be singing this. I almost kick myself because I was so excited to sing it.

  • Incredible!

  • This is just...butter...but not just any butter; the best. 5:31 to the end evokes the most warm and heartfelt expression that I've heard a men's ensemble. There is a God!

  • When I struggle with my faith, this is the song which reaffirms me.

  • wow i am getting goosebumps

  • in my opinion, more beautiful than Schubert's. Mater Dei, ora pro nobis.

  • @krcrub I agee.

  • @barehairy

lol sorry, but this song would be hideous in english.

    as many songs are lol

  • For 7 minutes and 28 seconds the windows of heaven are open.

  • My church choir (SATB) will be performing this on Christmas Eve, and I can only pray that I'll get through it without crying. It's such a beautiful piece of music. I hope we can do it justice.

  • my college choir is doing this version at our concert this weekend. i'm so excited :)

  • Thank you for this post. It makes one feel the need to kneel at an altar somewhere, someplace and ask forgiveness for a world gone mad.

  • This is a simply lovely rendition of one of the most beloved of yearning, loving, and beseeching prayers. The steadiness and fullness and emotive power of the lower voices in this version is so heartbreakingly beautiful that I could hardly keep a dry eye. Thank you for sharing this with us here. I hope our choir does as well this December. Thank you again.

  • 6 people are either rednecks, or def.

  • @uberman131 Deaf?

  • @MexiClueLess

    That's the one.

    : )

  • My choir sang this exact arrangement last year for Christmas and again with Chanticleer at the National Youth Choral Festival in March of this year. At Christmas I sang the echoing part, but at the festival I sang the first part. I don't know how many times we sang through this in rehersal and I still had to fight back tears while performing, and whenever I listen to it now. It amazes me that humans can make such beautiful music.

    Thank you for posting this.

  • @PrincessAnya91 Hey!! I was at the youth choir festival too!! What high school were you from?!?!

  • @tkdman589 I was with Templeton High. You?

  • @PrincessAnya91 Hylton High School from Woodbridge VA =)

  • @PrincessAnya91 CD Hylton High from Woodbridge, VA

  • @tkdman589 Oh, okay. I think I talked to a couple of people from your school on the elevator in the hotel. Wasn't that weekend just fantastic? It was the highlight of my senior year by far.

  • @PrincessAnya91 did the same thang xept in italy. SONNNN!

  • @PrincessAnya91 I was one of the Honor Choir, so I sang the echoing part at NYCF; there are few memories in life that I cherish more than when we would sing this, in rehearsal or performance.

  • My marching band uses this to warm up and to get us to listen to each other and ourselves. It's so incredibaly beautiful.

  • My Church Choir is singing this right now. it is INCREDIBLY hard, but it is well worth it, because the end result is beautiful!

  • Such a beautiful song. It's like God is whispering to us...

  • @musicguy2793 If this song is God whispering to us, I sure can't wait to talk to Him. This is easily in my top 5 favorite songs of all time. Sang the bass part in our choir... such an amazingly gorgeous song. I could listen to it for hours.

  • six people thought the dislike button meant like cuz they were crying so much

  • This is absolutely one of a kind. Nothing gets better than this. Gorgeous!

  • We sang this in my church choir this past year and we were really horrible. Fortunately that didn't ruin my enjoyment of this. Absolutely beautiful.

  • chanticleer rocks also you should google the choir raggazi they are also fabolous

  • I love this my choir is doing it for our Christmas Concert

  • GORGEOUS!!

    Thank you for posting.

  • This video started and I immediately held my head in my hands and prayed for God's goodness to reach me tonight, reach Dear God the hurting and needy. Let us never forget we are called by You to be better and more loving. Thank you.

  • exquisite.

  • How on earth could even six people dislike this?

  • @crazyivan2956 the like and dislike button being so close together perhaps? Or maybe it was dyslexia...

  • @crazyivan2956 I agree entirely!

  • @crazyivan2956 - Must be Protestants ;-)

  • @crazyivan2956 It's because those six dislikes aren't from Earth, there from Hell. :)

  • i got the tenor 1 part in the trio for this!!

  • ive just listened to this for the first time and was crying by the end of it. its such a wonderful and heart warming rendition. i closed my eyes and just listened. wonderful

  • my marching band plays this song we're goin to competition playing this pat my part is the beingin when they go AVE MARIA

  • This would be so fine at my Memorial Service - a few decades hence Lord willing...

  • My personal favorite arrangement of the Latin text of Ave Maria. Biebl really encapsulated the dome, cathedral like sound along w/ incredible emotion within the fibers of the note configurations.

  • most beautiful song I've ever heard. i am playing this in a marching band show and it is not nearly this good

  • most beautiful song I've ever heard

  • I cried when I heard this for the first time.

  • @nofatchicks844 Sing it in a concert with a wonderful group. You'll be in tears by the first minute. And every time you hear it afterwords, the memories will always move you to tears (in the best way possible).

  • Our choir is aiming at this level of singing.

    Some day of course!

  • my choir did a workshop with chanticleer. and got tickets to see them at bass performance hall it was amazing

  • sung this in windsor castle, bottom tenor is the shiz

  • LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT

  • Chanticleer - bravo! I had an opportunity to hear these guys in live for 3 times, they're something!

  • speechless

  • GREATEST.

    SONG.

    EVER.

  • Still the best choir song.

  • Comment removed

  • no words. speechless.

  • We just sang this at our concert and it was amazing (and I had the second solo ^_^). I'm so happy we made music on it. Thank you Lord Jesus.

  • I heard the choral arrangement for Adagio for Strings recently, and was sublime. Hearing this piece makes me wonder how amazing this piece would be if it were performed by a cello choir, as I am a cellist. But this is simply breath taking. This is what singers should sound like.

  • YAY!! We're singing this for our spring concert. Such a beautiful song, I just hope (and pray) that when we sing it, that we do it with the emotion that was meant to come out in the song. Chanticleer does an amazing job at this. ^_^

  • sang this exact version in my All-state mens. I thought we did good... then listened to this D:. (No offence mister Ben Ailing!!!)

  • @Ironsouled _ you guys did great to me brought tears to my eyes ....i was in the intermediate mixed choir

  • The particular choir featured here is entirely male voices: the San Francisco based Chanticleer. I've heard them perform live many times... one of the world's best chamber choirs.

  • The Notre Dame glee club performed this in our church a few years ago. This always brings a tear to my eye.

  • a picardy third? I am not quite sure its possible to have one if the piece is already in major, but i still agree with you! its amazing :)

  • what do you call this type of music?? That sounds like a really stupid question, but I love this, when it sounds sort of like monks :D but whatever I search it doesnt rlly work :/

    This is beautiful btw :P

  • It's called gregorian chant! At least the opening is...for the rest of it, its just choral music.

  • Well, this is a 20th century composition by Franz Biebl. The composition is inspired by both Gregorian chant (the three solo lines that chant the parts of the Angelus), while the "Ave Maria" refrain is in a polyphonic style, but one that is distinct from (though clearly inspired by) Renaissance polyphony.

I can't really find another name for this other than "20th-century classical," which is indeed a valid categorization.

  • @BkueSkysNdButterflys

it would be classified as a latin motet...i believe

  • This really brought tears to my eyes, this is just so lovely, so beautiful.. Truly amazing <3

  • Perfection.

  • The beauty of this song is an experience of grace.

  • I totally agree. I absolutely LOVE this performance. Last night I was listening to it and it was a profound spiritual moment! Praise God for His beauty!

  • Discovered this recording while listening to Chanticleer on Rhapsody. So warm, so inviting, so moving.

  • Still my favorite choir song of all time.

  • It fulfills me with warmth....absolutely well done!

  • This is what heaven will sound like!!!!

  • I was in love with this throughout the song, then almost cried when I heard the overtones on the very last note of the song. Beautiful recording!

  • fantastic...

Only wish the quality was better.

  • every time i hear this my spine tingles and my heart goes all aflutter :D

  • I bet that was very cool!

  • SUTA

  • @GuillermoMontecelo phantom?

  • yes

  • I believe I do.

  • does anybody have an MP3 of this?

  • My God. This is amazing. The feeling it sparks is indescribable.

  • Its so beautiful...

  • Best rendition ever...

  • I love this. Must start a male voice choir here and teach them this! Gets into your soul doesn't it?

  • ahh i finally found it! were playing this for our winter band concert and i love it i just bought the song for my ipod:)

  • I saw Chanticleer in concert a mounth ago, and I got to talk to a few of them, and they said they were going to preform Ave Maria for their X-mas concert. they were Awesome by the way.

  • what's the chord progression for this piece???

  • The story behind this song is even more inspiring when you find out the Biebl actually wrote it as part of a competition for firemen in Austria. He wrote it in order to have his firehouse win a very nominal prize of which he wasn't paid one red cent. To be known for such a glorious piece of music and little else seems tragic to me, but also fitting as even in the "classical" world, one hit wonders did exist. Thank you Franz Biebl and thank you Chanticleer for doing this piece justice.

  • i don't think there's enough music in the world like this.

  • This reminds me of my late band director, he really loved this song, he even made this our warm up songs before competitions, really brings back good memories! ;]

  • this is my favorite ave maria. love it so much it brings tears to my eyes

  • Just amazing....

  • I got 15th out of 42

  • Singing this was the highlight of my life, I'd like to think. There isn't much better than this.

  • just got first chair at region, but they dropped this for auditions (was so pissed). We never get to audition the mens pieces. This song is so beautiful though.

  • Get to state and you'll sing this again...only it will be the most unreal experience of your life. Good luck.

  • Simply beautiful, majestic, have seen Chanticleer perform it several times... I am tearing now. Joy... peace.
