The storyline has potential but I don't like the director's explanation. The development of the characters and the progression of the story are very important for a movie. As a viewer, I want to be closer to the truth at the end of the movie. Whether she is a lesbian or not, should be made clear at the end. Discreetness can be a winning recipe like the director has mentioned but it can also be its downfall.
