Rippert, en dépit de ses états de service bien réels, est un affabulateur de plus, qui n'a pas hésité à s'attribuer une Croix de Chevalier qu'il n'a jamais reçue et à se déclarer subitement l'unique frère du chanteur Ivan Rebroff quelques jours après sa mort.
Il a abattu 28 avions hostiles. Mais en 1944 pour les chasseurs allemands c'etait pas suffisant pour recevoir le croix de chevalier. Selon le journal de corporal Helmut Lipfert (issue par l'edition Motorbuch) on avait besoin des75 victoires pour ca deja en1943. Enfin 70ans aprês c'est três difficile decider qui a abattu qui.
On à trouvé son avion dans les années 1990aines et selons les recherches de ses restants il etait abattu. Peutêtre par Rippert peutêtre par un aviateur inconnu mais son épave montrait des impacts de canons.

Great movie! No Rippert has no guilt as he was fighting for his country and had to destroy the ennemy plane. He couldn't know that inside of this P38 was a great genius and that this would cause a great loss for humanity. However, in a certain way, he helped St. Ex to redeem himself as Clostermann put it. St. Ex initially opted for Pétain and was a late-comer to the FFL... Godspeed little prince!
Irgendwie find ich das Knochengesicht von Pilot unpassend. Der sieht aus wie'n Mittvierziger. Rippert war aber grade Anfang 20 als er Exupery runterholte. Nebenbei aus 30m Abstand schon ist die P38F5 (Aufklärervariante) vom Jäger P38J nicht zu unterscheiden.
I heard this today from german news TV tagesthemen too. Now I have done some research on an airaces home page (magnusfamily/airaces.html) and just taken in aware that Horst Rippert achieved 29 confirmed scores in total during ww2. But Exupery's death obviously must have given him the feeling to be responsable for friendly fire.
No negative feedback from here, Horst Rippert , as far as I know is still alive, and regretting the shooting, but, how was he to know?. Many thanks for your exellent reportage, Warmest regards Stewart.
He said that if the P-38 did an evasive manuver he would leave it alone, because the fastness of this plane would make the kill nearly imposible, but it didn't. So it was his duty (recoinasance information would help to organize an offensive) a thing I would not discuss. He said when he found out he felt sadness, because he and his generation has read Saint-Ex... Take care, God bless...
But I doubt the "kein Angst" thing - too romantic for Luftwaffe in summer 1944. It was no more fight without fear. Many German pilots had either psychical breakdowns or at least problems with nerves - result of "Jägerschreck".

Personne n'a abattu Saint Ex.
Saint Ex a très probablement été victime d'un accident, comme tant d'autres plus jeunes que lui.
Ce n'était pas son premier accident, surtout sur P-38. Le dernier lui aura été fatal.

Quelles sont vos sources ?
L'épave a été retrouvée en 2000, exhumée en septembre 2003 puis formellement identifiée en avril 2004.
Selon le colonel Gavoille, ancien chef de Saint Exupéry, aucun impact de balle n'a été retrouvé sur l'épave...

Les archives de la Luftwaffe (OKL), très bien tenues, ne mentionnent aucune revendication ce jour-là sur ce secteur ni aucun combat.
Comme toute armée de l'air, la Luftwaffe ne permettait pas qu'un pilote décolle pour une mission de guerre en solo.
Il y aurait donc eu des témoins.

It's a very nice story but the name of the pilot who shot down Antoine de Saint-Exupery's unarmed P38 was Horst Rippert.
