continued continued continued. I hate to say it but I sold it to a guy (jerk) that, aside from ripping me off for 100 bucks said he was going to put a chevy motor in it. I almost didn't sell it to him because of that but I'd bought a "real" race car and need the money, full tube chassis, 4 link and had an 1981 Dodge Omni body on it of all things. Sounds ugly but the body actually looks pretty good on it. I used the money to redo the car and build a new 500" mill for it. 9.27@148 has been my best
@jaded16340 Thank you for the great comment....if you ever post pictures of your car, I would love to see it. Have a great summer racing, and I will pass on your great spirit to my Mom..
@jaded16340 I actually have a clip on youtube. I'll attempt to link it. It's very "amature" video. The first pass, in the left lane there was a huge "step" in the track where they added fresh ashphalt but never ground or at least pounded down the edge, it was a step at least 2" tall and was enough to disrupt the rearend and promptly put me in the other lane. When I asked the owners kid about it he made a snotty reply "oh, we have real 10 sec cars run here with no problem". I click off a 9.27
The owners son was so pissed they chased me out of there. I've not been there since. Anyway, the clip is pretty rough and there's no scoreboard (extremely dumpy track) to verify my time. That 9.27 @ 148 was right off the trailer and it's first shakedown pass. It has quite a bit more potential. If I could only stop breaking things! LOL. The following pass I went up for my burnout, the owners son was trying to wave me off. Of course I was ignoreing him, and I promptly shattered the rear end. ohwel
continued continued. The maroon paint was extremely faded and the interior was so bad I basicly just VACUUMED it up off the floor LOL. I ended up back halving that car with a ladder bar setup. I used a set of adapter motor mounts meant for 318 to 440 swap. I gutted it and got it down to 3000 lbs. Eventually I built a stroker 500" mill for it and in it I made my first 10 second pass. was actuallty 10.999 LOL but I was soo cool after that. Next pass I blew it up. huge hole in the block LOL
Continued, my 66 Coronet was a really cool car. The 67s had a different grill and the trim/moldings were different, just a whole different car. Mine was a V8 car and was actually a Coronet 500. Basically ment it had the v8 and AC LOL. I bought it from a guy in Indiana, I was from northern Michigan. My wife and I hauled it back with a car dollie with my 96 intrepid. Frond drive cars and hauling with a car dollie wasn't a good deal, then to top it off it started snowing!
Yea, it would be pretty incredible to have her for a mom. Hell, I tried and tried to get my wife to race or at least come along, have bar b que, meet the other "racing wives" at the track. Couldn't get her to do it. Maybe that's why were split up now! LOL I was born in 1966 so a lot of the really cool stuff was before my time unfortunately. I actually didn't get into racing until I was around 30 but from the first pass I was hooked! I raced everything I could get. a 66 coronet, crotch rocket bik
@mobeers1 It's tough to get information on the early top woman drag racers like Dorothy...but youTube has been a great outlet for information. Thank you for the comment, and I hope to post more video's of her and my Dad.
Got to love you tube. Where else can you find such a great example of the Amercan sport of drag racing. Mopars and drag racing..............doesn't get any better ! To think that people are still racing the very same cars on small tracks all over this great country. I feel blessed to have lived during these times and been able to grow up watching and eventually owning and driving Mopars at the dragstrip. Life is good !
@zobcity01 If I remember right, the track in the video was at Newport Airport strip, but I ran at Woodburn, Madras, Balboa (Eugene) and Bremerton, Wa. Those were great memories for me and my Involvement with Columbia Timing Asc. as Sec. of "The Coachmen" car club. I am still a Mopar Lover.
@5769JJ My husband always felt he was ahead of the rest by letting me drive, as I was many, many lbs. lighter than him. He was a great mechanic and tuner and I loved the thrill of the race! And that coupled with a Hemi ahead of its time, won us all our races.
Yes ! Dorothy mainly raced the Northwest. She is still a Mopar fan. All of her current rides are Dodge. She just changed the oil on her V-10 yesterday, and does all her own up keep. I love being her kid. Thank you for the nice comments!!
Wow! I've been a hard core drag race fan since the mid sixties, but I don't remember her. I cannot believe how she escaped me. Where was her "home" track? Is she still alive, and what / how is she doing?
Wouldn't you love to have that old hemi lightweight of hers NOW
Thanks for the memories! Superb singing and excellent video of Dorothy. If I were her I'd cherish it forever. Yes, Holton makes some VERY fast Hemi motors for sure. God Bless You All....
the car looks clean..my dad, Harry holton is 77 and still racing in the modern era, if you ever need any race enging work give us a ring... (209) 527-1568 chris holton
slow starts may have been handicap against different class cars. Stock cups eliminator were my favorite. Had a 4.95 second handicap running a slant six in Q/S against a S/S 440. nailed me right at the finish line. Guy told me worst part was watching me go down track while waiting for his lights. Nice post about a lady racer I never knew.
I've never heard of Dorothy before and i'd always thought Shirley Shahan and Mary Ann Foss were probably the only lady Hemi drivers ... and the Little Old Lady from Pasadena maybe.
As a member of Columbia Timing Asc. in the Northwest, I was proud to be "the first female" to tear up the strips, but will admit I did lose a race to the "Dragon Lady". We were the female pioneers on the drag strips.Early in my career, I was kicked out of the "powder Puff" races because of my dominence and forced to race against the men. And that did not stop me from winning every race except one. The hemi's were just dominent!!!
Wow I know Dorothy very well and this is true...she does everything with speed even when shes on her tractor...Like mother like daughter, like father like brother, they are the real deal !!!
WOW, is all I can say. You have a fantastic family legacy!!! I am a 3rd generation mechanic and my grandfather used to build and race midgets and even a duesenberg or 2 back in the early days, I dont have any video but i got tons of photos to show my kids someday...thanks for sharing
When are they going to make a movie about "your life" Dorothy? The "Powder Puff, the "Motorcycles", not to mention the "Horse Power"...I'd wait in line for that...
YOU ROCK DOROTHY
