Why subsidize traditional manufacturing? There is no way we can compete with the developing countries in price, and increasingly, in quality. To do so would take so much subsidization that it would waste tons of taxpayer funds?
Why not focus on encouraging 'green' manufacturing in these depressed areas? The EU is currently leading in 'green' manufacturing and exporting the technology to us. The working skills necessary are similar, and we could create innovative, clean jobs.
If you want to jump start the economy, give every person that paid taxes for the past 5 years a $5,000 tax refund. This infusion of capital into local economies will spur a recovery and only cost $650 billion. Not Trillions! Furthermore, lower the amount of taxes everyone pays by 25%. The current bailout system is biased and favors certain employment groups and croney friends of politicians. Government is responsible for the proper spending and use of taxpayer's money.
